    Re: vegetarians all SLIM?

All vegetarians aren't slim. My mother-in-law is vegan and probably weighs 300 pounds at 5'4". I think some vegetarians might be more conscious of putting chemicals and processed foods into their bodies than non-vegetarians too, so that might also contribute to what you have seen. My mother-in-law is a political vegan as opposed to being a vegan for health reasons, so she is constantly looking for fake foods that are vegan to take the place of foods she used to eat that had animal products in them. Some of the stuff she eats is so full of chemical garbage, I'm surprised it even qualifies as food.

Anyway, I don't think that there is a way of eating that works for every human being. Some bodies work better with different fuels. Mine happens to work best with no sugar and no starch and only veggie carbs with lots of meat... but others might find that their body works best on something totally different.

I was vegetarian for about two years before starting Atkins. I wasn't slim.

If you eat healthy carbs, fats and proteins (from whatever source), watch your calories and stay active you can be slim no doubt about it. But sugar and starches are problematic to deal with. And vegetarians who indulge in a lot of pasta will have weight problems. We have members here that were vegetarians became obese and then decide to try atkins as their new life style.

You have not read the book yet Adam. Please read it. It is very helpful to know the science of what you are doing. I think it sounds like you need that kind of motivation.

theres 2 types of vegetarians imo

type 1 skeleton: sick , weak , low energy , no muscle , basically in starvation mode and very slowly dieing

type 2 fatty: also sick , weak , low energy , no muscle , and in starvation mode and slowly dieing the only difference is they may eat more refined carbs like whole wheat and less vegetables resulting in higher toxic blood sugar spikes which must be stored as fat before reaching there kidneys

and then theres soy... the horrors of soy which cause horible life changeing birth defects in babys from moms who eat large amounts of soy

and then i see at the store Vegan baby food.... that really pissed me off its one thing for an adult to unknowingly kill themselfs but its another thing for a helpless baby

I was a low fat vegetarian and I certainly wasn't slim. In fact, I gained 40-50 pounds as a vegetarian.

Looking back at it, I think it was because I ate too many "good carbs" to make up for the fat I cut out. I used to make a vegetable lasagne that had a "cream sauce" made from pureed potatoes. Another favorite was a stuffed pasta shell thing using potatoes and tofu to make "ricotta" cheese...plus more of that potato "cream sauce".

Anyhow, I packed on the weight because I was hungry all the time.

Not to be contradictory, but there really are loads of people who follow an extremely healthy vegetarian or vegan diet. It's possible to replace protien with vegetarian sources (nuts, legumes, tofu, etc). There are plenty of people who have the misconception that Atkins is really unhealthy....I think the idea that all vegetarians are unhealthy is equally inaccurate.

                  Re: vegetarians all SLIM?

I tried being a veggie for about a month before starting Atkins. (I did WW for four months, followed by one month of veggie.) I lost 12 pounds on WW, but it was tragically slow and I was starving constantly in addition to being totally obsessed with food. So, thought I'd try being a veggie for a month to see if that would work... Well, I gained back about 8 pounds.
I, too, thought all veggies were slim. A lot are, I wasn't one of them!

Don't even get me started on soy protein (not real soy like edamame or tofu). All I know is that after using Medifast for several months (soy protein) AND eating things like Boca burgers and TVP, I now have an extreme sensitivity to soy (and artificial sweeteners). I didn't know at the time that most all commercial foods contain soy and that probably added to the problem.

Back to vegheads...I've known very healthy, slim ones and also some chubby ones. Before Atkins I was following a pretty much vegetarian South Beach diet. It was very healthy but my weight loss stalled for months and months. It was just too many carbs for my body to effectively lose weight.

Cute, Mizski, very cute. I bet that's the biggest hangup men have when they get overweight. I knew this guy that was really thin but suffered from gynecomastia. He used to wrap his chest with these elastic bands really tight in order to mask them. I felt sorry for him but they did look strange when he was wearing a tee shirt. He never went to the beach or a swimming pool.

i used to have gynecomastia but then i whent on the atkins diet and then whent to the Gym and then got excess skin removal surgery (breast reduction) and now i finally look like a normal man i also got a tummy tuck so my abbs show now lol

and ya gynecomastia was a nightmare to have that and being fat basically ruined my life i used to look like a half dead mutant freak lol

if only i had a before and after picture for these forums sadly i never took a single picture of myself back then

but im doing great now i look VERY good a complete transformation thanks to atkins & going to the gym

the only main thing thats left now that needs fixing is the excess skin that needs to be removed from my lower body thighs and such but i can easily hide that part of me till then

Wow, this is a mystifying comment. Soy is nothing else than a bean.

I am in my 8th year of living in Japan, and you know what? The Japanese, who are one of the healthiest and longest living nationalities on the planet, eat a **** of a lot of soy.

                              - Eda mame - they eat for snacks with beer, and just anytime.
                              - Tofu - this is a veeeeery japanese thing to eat, several of the most famous dishes in Japan are based on it (like Mabou Tofu).
                              - Soy sauce -This is the #1 sauce used here. Used on sashimi, sushi, dumplings, and just about anything else you can think of.

So yeah, I am pretty taken aback by the comments linking soy to birth defects through some very very tenous perceived link.
