  • Was only gone 3 1/2 years

    Hey there!

I signed up for this forum a long time ago.. sometime in the late 90s I'd guess. The Atkins plan is simply the best and worked incredibly for me the first time. I went from 263 to 235 in no time flat. That was a long time ago.. and I've done some form of low-carbing ever since. I"m back up around 260 and am ready to bring things back in check. The issue is, I've started Atkins WOE a few other times and never have seen weight loss anywhere near what it originally was. I even bought some more testing strips and never turned them purple again as I had that first time. Is there a way to seriously kick start the transition from glucose to ketones? The signal that I was in fact burning them had such a positive affect on my progress.. I'd love to be able to get there again.

I'd love some advice from those of you who started and stopped and had success the second (or third or fourth) time around.

    thanks so much!

Welcome back, Joe! From your profile, looks like you registered in April 2003. ADBB has only been around since Feb 2003.

Do not compare your weight loss now with the weight loss you saw in 2003. As Dr. Atkins told us, you can submit your complaint to Father Time.

Any change in the color of the ketostix is an indicator of ketosis, whether it's pink or purple. Ketostix only measure excess acetoacetate (one of the three types of ketones) you pee, so if you have no excess left, you can be in lipolysis/ketosis without changing the color of the stix. Are you noticing any of the physical signs of ketosis, like reduced appetite, increased energy, different odor of your breath, pee and/or sweat, thirst? These are more reliable than the stix.

You might also want to check the "Second Time Around Club": Second Time Around Club - Atkins Diet
The folks there have re-started Atkins the 2nd (or 99th time), and you'll see they are losing.

Post your menu in the "Review My Menu" forum if you want someone to take a look over it. This is the link to the forum: Review My Menu - Atkins Diet

Hey Joe, welcome back...it's great to see you on the board! Congratulations on making the decision and commitment to yourself to become healthy, that's awesome!

I agree with everything Georgiana has shared with you. I would add that it would be most beneficial for you you to take all your measurements as soon as possible and write theme down as well as the date. Every month or so, re-measure and compare them to your last measurements. That is the best way to track results. Often times the scales won't move but one can see that their clothing is fitting better...that's a sign that one is losing weight despite the fact that the scales might not be moving or might be moving slower than what one hopes or expects....be sure to track your measurements....that's the most accurate way!

Come here lots, read as many posts as you can (they're very encouraging, inspirational and chalk full of great ideas and information). Post as often as you like, there's always someone here ready to help out when needed.

I look forward to hearing how things are going for you....remember, the most important thing is...NEVER EVER EVER EVER give up....no matter what!

All the very best to you,
      Sarina

Re: Was only gone 3 1/2 years

Thanks for the support ladies. Couple of things.. My successful journey with Atkins was definitely in the 90s. 1998 at the latest. I must have found this board when trying my second or third times. I'd hate to admit that age might have been a factor over the years.. but, I guess age might have been a factor. I'm 43 now.. in reasonably good shape.. but, still would love to see a 220 if not 230 at some point.

I am not back on the WOE full-fledged yet.. but, plan to be soon. Again, I mostly low carb in my daily life so this transition to full Atkins shouldn't be a problem. The hardest thing for me will be giving up caffeine. I know I drank tons of it the first time around.. but, feel my lack of success since might be tied to it.

again.. thanks for the support and I'll update you here when I get going. Now to that second time around section of the board.

Re: Was only gone 3 1/2 years

          Welcome back -

Before you are ready to do this full fledged get a copy of the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) book and read it cover to cover - that way you will know how the plan works and the science behind it. At the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

Make a copy of this list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html and take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

The recipe sites are helpful for meal planning – just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with.

Re: Was only gone 3 1/2 years

Welcome back! Check in here often ... every day, if you can. It's my Number One tip for either new Atkineers or returnees (I just got back myself; but was only off for two months ...and gained 10 lbs. ). This is such a great support group and everyone here is in the same boat. So don't be a stranger !
