  • SOY question...

ok - so I'm past rung 6 - which is when it's "ok" to add back in soy.

I really haven't added anything back in that HAS soy - mainly because I try to avoid it...but I guess my question is - how do all of you feel about soy?

There's SO many differing ideas out there that either Soy is GREAT for you or that it's AWEFUL for you.

I'm just curious what you all think?...

I know that soy flour is good to use for some recipes - but usually I use coconut flour or almound flour instead...

    Anyways - just curious!!

    Re: SOY question...

Hey girlie!! Nice to see you on the board!

You "get" to use almond flour because you can find it!! I have never been able to find it in numerous grocery stores here where I live. I'll have to shop in a more "progressive" city to find it, I suppose.

I was craving pancakes one day and I happened upon a recipe for soy pancakes. I actually could find that at the local WalMart so I bought that and some sugar free syrup. I was amazed how "normal" tasting the pancakes turned out! I think the sugar free syrup made me sick the first time I ate it but that never happened again.

To answer your question, I'm not sure how I feel about soy. I've read really positive things about it and very negative things about it. It seems all the research contradicts itself. Sometimes when that happens, I just go with my taste buds and if it serves the purposes of my way of eating. Then I cross my fingers and hope for definitive soy facts before I spend the next several decades eating it!!

      Re: SOY question...

Yes, when there are so many conflicting opinions on the matter, it is hard to know what to do.

I've only used soy flour a couple of times... it appears that the only kinds of foods that I can tolerate (even in Maintenance) are meat/chicken/seafood and a side of vegetables... pretty much all things with "ingredients" are trigger foods for me. I once used some carbquick to make some brownies, and even though there weren't very good, I ate the entire pan in one day.

I do eat a lot of edamame... that is soy in its natural form, so I'm not scared of it. I've been having severe menapausal symptoms, and soy is supposed to be good for that... my gyno suggested it. However, I trust my primary care physician much more than the gyno, and I have my annual physical and bloodwork scheduled for Tuesday. I plan to ask him about the soy issue.

BTW, Ev - do have Albertson's where you live? I've seen almond flour there (although a little pricey). Of course, I've seen it at Whole Foods, too.

        Re: SOY question...

I have a thyroid issue and I have been reading about Soy and I have been cutting down on it (Soy is almost in everything actually )

I have decided that for a bit of soy is OK. But I think I do not want to eat it in large quantities.
I used to do soy milk which I like but I have replaced that with almond milk.
I do use soy flour. I like it and it is versatile stuff. But it is not a daily thing (I also had pancakes with soy today)
And I like tofu. And I do some tofu croƻtons and some tofu in smoothies.

I eat soy---sparingly. No more than once a month (if that at all.)

Hey Mitzimarie! No Albertson's, no Whole Foods, no Trader Joe's. In fact, the only thing we've got here is WalMart, Kroger and a few local no name groceries. That's it. I'm proud I've gotten this far with no real help from SELECTION and OPTIONS!!!
