    LOL

That is one of the funniest things I have read for a while.

As for the rest of what you have writen, what can I say? I started to read it at work then realised it would need my full attention so I left it untlil this evening, it's one mother of a response to a rather idle OP. Thank you for putting all those demonic misconceptions to bed once and for all, I thought it would take a while before I was totally convinced Atkins was safe but you have just nailed it in one (lengthy) post! I think that today I have learned to tell the difference between somebody who is desperately trying to make a point about something they feel strongly about but do not really understand and somebody who really knows what they are talking about beautifully constructing a watertight counter argument to defend something they really care about (that's you Georgina!).

Mods, do not delete this thread, we have a genius in our midst! Georgina, you are a star and I envy your ability to cut through claptrap with such precision and efficiency and love for what you believe . Hurray for Georgina and Hurray for Atkins!

I found it riveting. Seriously. I'm grateful that we have someone here who can eloquently and scientifically sift through all the ill press. Thank you so much!

Reference [1] is from a March 1973 issue of The Chronicle, which is not a medical journal. Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution (DADR) was published in 1972, and between 1972 and 1873, there was no study showing that the 1972 plan
This is the only thing that I saw...I think it should read 1973?

      Thanks again, G.

I appreciate the detailed approach you take ... but I would expect nothing less from you! Thanks.

How funny...I just had a conversation today about this and said basically the same thing!

Thanks for the thoughtful response Georgiana! I'm sure there are plenty of us who were frightened by main stream media when we first started following Atkins. It's nice to hear a voice of reason!

              Re: Nay sayers

Gosh, how did this thread become about me? Didn't you guys read the part of the TOS that says you should not hijack threads?!

Seriously, thanks. There is a lot of research out there, both pro and against Atkins, and it can all be very confusing... knowing what you should believe and what is crap. But seeing Atkins work (not only in terms of weight loss) for all of you, makes it easier for one to make up his/her mind.

Thanks, Mizski. I'll go change that. It must be the whole black hole thing that messed up the time....

Yanto, there are lots of great responses here. Be sure to also check out my Debating Atkins thread. All of the awesome members here really helped me work through this same problem.

                    Re: Nay sayers

                    Hey there everyone,
Am new to this forum and am exploring the Atkins diet for a couple of reasons:
                    A. I despise the powers that be being able to freely give advice that patently is not true
                    B. Although I am not overweight I have issues with polycystic ovaries & believe that refined carbs make it harder for me

So i would like to ask a couple of questions...

If I try the Atkins diet will I automatically lose weight? As I am happy with my weight.

Also, for you Georgiana (as I am impressed how well you look for scientific reasoning as opposed to mumbo jumbo)... I have a friend (recently training as a nutritionalist - with a point to prove!!!) who sent me a link to a recent study about low carb diets: http://www.pnas.org.ezproxy.liv.ac.u....full.pdf+html

Could you please have a look at it and tell me how to (politely) rebutt this piece of proof that a low carb diet has adverse vascular effects!!

There was also a piece in the Times entitled "Low carb diet damages arteries - study shows" - you should read it for a laugh!! Apparantly the leader of the study was on a low carb diet until this study!!! Hmmmm.....

Anyway I'd be glad of your thoughts...

If you do Induction, you will likely lose some weight. Not a lot, like some heavier members do, but still. If you don't mind losing a few pounds (which you can gain back later), then you could do 2 weeks of Induction, estimate your CCLL/CCLM and then move to Maintenance. Alternatively, you could start lowering your carbohydrate intake (and give up sugars and stuff, of course) down to a level where you begin to lose weight. That level is your CCLL --- if you go below it, you will lose weight. Then you can slowly increase your carb intake (starting from the CCLL) until you begin to gain weight --- that's your CCLM.

Did you read Atkins for Life? That book might help you.

I can't access that website (asks for username and password). But from the paper number, I believe is the one that was published in last week by Foo et al. If that's the one, then it was discussed yesterday and the day before in this thread: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...-arteries.html

This is an excellent book. There is also the Atkins for Life Kit with handy cards with food groups/carbs (among other things). I picked up both for later reference at a dollar store for cheapo.

A friend started Atkins about a year ago just for the eating lifestyle, not to lose weight. I'm not sure how she arrived at her CCLL or CCLM but she has been doing Maintenance all this time and she LOVES it! She claims that she has never felt better.
