  • Hellman's Mayo = Sugar!?

Ok week two starts today. I've lost about 4 lbs in the first week.

I have been eating chicken salad all week made with Hellman's Mayo. I would guess about 2 cups per day with fairly heavy mayo. I just realized today that it has sugar as an ingredient but I was certain that liberal amounts of mayo were allowed.

Should I cut it out or cut it down? I don't want to leave excess pounds out there but I'm not sure if this kept me from losing 5 or 6.

And I thought I was doing everything by the book!

Where in the world do you live? there are brands of mayonnaise that do not have added sugar in the ingredients - Dukes is one in the USA, Tracklements is one in the UK - so take a look at the ingredients of other brands to see if you can get one without sugar.

Many people do all right using Hellmans but if possible find one without sugar to improve your chances

I use Hellmans and because I don't use it often or much at a time don't see any problem with it. I can't find any brands in my area that don't have sugar added and failed miserably when I tried to make my own so I continue to use Hellmans.

Duke's is in the southern states -- I'm in Missouri but we aren't considered "southern" enough to get Duke's brand.

        I live in Massachusetts LOL.

I have lost 5.5 pounds in 8 days and am in ketosis still.

Luckily I am out of Hellman's now so I'll take a look for sugar free next time i hit the store.

        Thanks guys!

Isn't it both shocking and sad just how MANY products have sugar or corn syrup ingredients in them when it is often totally unnecessary? It is in nearly every processed food item you pick up, whether it is meat, vegetables, or some type of condiment (which is one of the reasons I gave up almost every processed food item in early 2006).

I hadn't shopped in a chain store for groceries in several years until recently, and the first thing I noticed was the sugary smell while walking past a long shelf of bread.

And we wonder why there is an obesity and diabetes epidemic...

I'm a Hellman's gal...there is no other mayo in my book. I've used it with no problems but I usually only have mayo a few times a week at most. My suggestion would be to keep the Hellman's but look for more variety in your meals than chicken salad.

I can't find mayo anywhere without sugar, so I substitute sour cream for mayo now. Works great with tuna salad and deviled eggs!

Yeah I'm trying but making a couple lbs of chicken salad at the start of the week and eating a few fork fulls every few hours is really convenient. I was unable to find any sugar free mayo so I'm sticking with Hellman's and I'll just use less of it.

                Thanks!

I wonder if the fat in the Hellman's effects the absorption or prevents the absortion of the sugar in some way.
I know if a lactose intolerant person eats dairy with a high fat content sometimes it will not be a problem, because the fat slows the absorption enough were they are able to digest the dairy.

                  HELLMAN'S
They do not list sugar in the Nutrition Facts.
Ingredients: Soybean oil,Water, whole eggs and yolks, vinegar, salt, SUGAR, lemon juice, , natural flavors, calcium, Disodium edta (used to protect quality) (ha ha-also known as a persrvative)

Huge ditto to all of this. For those who are interested, here's a very good piece from Michael Pollan on the current health care reform debate and the impact it may have on the food industry. It's a relatively short read and absolutely worth it.

As for sugar in mayo, I suspected from the get-go that Hellman's had sugar because it tasted sweet to me. My grocery store's generic brand has the least amount of sugar (if any at all, I can't recall at the moment) of all the brands sold there, so I use that one. So check out your generics.

We don't go by the nutrition facts for Sugar...we go by the ingredients. Natural Sugar from foods on the acceptable food list will show up as sugars on the nutrition label...it is a type of carbohydrate. Go by the ingredient list instead. That works both ways, BTW - even if a product is "no carb", you can only eat it if all of the ingredients are acceptable for your Phase/Rung.

yeah seems like just about everything has sugar in it these days, thats why you have to really read the lalels to make sure you buy a brand that doesn't have sugar or other bad ingredients....
