  • What slows your weight loss?

I am having little to no problems sticking to this way of eating. I continue to lose weight, but I do feel it is a little slower than it could be, especially given how much I still have to lose. I know I need to be more consistent with some things (exercising, water, etc) on a daily basis, but overall things are going fine.

I'm just curious what things other people have identified as being the most common to slow down their weight loss. Not drinking enough water, cheese, etc.

I don't have any problem drinking water, but if I slack off, I gain. Cheese and cream seem to stall me. Also, when I went up the ladder, peanut butter was a trigger, plus made me gain way out of proportion as to the amount I ate. Sadly, all fruits, including berries make me stall. I love fruit, but I can only eat it sparingly and very seldom.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

I don't drink anywhere near enough water, to be honest. I am definitely getting better, though. But yeah, I always have a good "whooshie" after drinking the necessary water for a few days.

A while back, when I had reached the correct ladder, i added a small amount of green beans to my lunch. Any amount of green beans seemed to mess up my blood sugar and made me hungrier than normal and I'd eat more (not sure why). No more green beans for me.

Cheese. I still eat it but go easy on it. Usually 1 oz per day, a few days a week.

Re: What slows your weight loss?

I suspect cheese or cream could be slowing me down, but I have been resistant to removing them. Mostly because they are two of my favorite things - cream in a little coffee being my favorite treat on a daily basis, and a string cheese a few times a day REALLY squashes whatever hunger I may have between meals and makes it SO much easier to make good choices, eat smaller quantities, and/or pass by things that may be questionable. They are about the only carbs I get other than vegetables and maybe 2 carbs a day in salad dressing. I'm curious if trading 3 carbs of string cheese is worth giving up if I am more hungry and thus replace it with another cup or two of veggies with more total net carbs than the cheese would be. I suppose the only way to find out is to try it for a week or two. Of course I could always replace it with meat, but I would strongly prefer the veggies. I am currently trying to leave out the cream except for one cup of coffee a day. But you know, with so many other variables each day (other foods, water intake, sodium intake, exercise level), I do find it hard sometimes to feel sure it is one thing or another. I suppose that just takes time, and as I said, more consistency on a daily basis with everything else.

I often have a small snack right at bedtime, and wonder if that has any effect or not, either.

I do find it interesting that I have lost much more slowly the last few weeks than the many weeks before, when Fitday shows I am only taking in about 1600 cals a day on average versus about 2100 the weeks before (not trying to do that, just not as hungry as I was). Supposedly I would have to eat 3k+/- a day to just maintain my weight even if I did NO exercise. Doesn't make a very strong case for the low cal diet crowd, at least in my case. I have tracked cals before in my pre-Atkins days, and I NEVER ate as many calories as it said I would have to consume in order to either get to OR maintain my weight. Funny how that works - or rather, doesn't work. Not that I am advocating going insane on calorie counts, nor necessarily counting them at all (fitday is doing it automatically), just find it interesting. Seems not too important at the moment in my case, as long as it is within a reasonable range.

Re: What slows your weight loss?

Cheating, adding more legal carbs, too much cheese and sour cream. Not enough fat. But I have never gotten really fast weightloss for a long period of time. My body happens to like this weight and is just dragging along right now. But I can tell you if I quit the diet I'll end up gaining ten pounds and have to come back and loose it all over again before I can slowly move foreward. Play with fitday and your menus and keep at it. I loose faster and then slower and I'm half convinced its the tweaking of the diet, half convinced that my body just like to be at certain weights more than others.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

                  1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
                  2nd mini goal: 140!
                  3rd mini goal:135!
                  4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

Green beans are allowed from day one. I wouldn't say they stall me, but I can't stop eating them once I start. I have heard people say that no one binges on veggies, but I do on fresh green beans from the garden. I can green beans for winter, but I said all summer when I cooked a big pot with ham, straight from the garden, I was going to freeze some in portions for when I needed a veggie fast, but it never happened. I cooked a big stockpot full several times, but I just ate nothing else until they were gone--yes, even for breakfast.

When we go out to pizza, I just eat the toppings. Cheese and pepperoni. I order it without the tomato sauce... I ALWAYS gain the next day. And then it takes me about 2 to 3 days to get back to where I was... but it's SOOO good~!

Basically eating in restaurants makes me gain or stall...

                          Pizza, ugh...

Pre-Atkins, I was once at the very same weight for more than 2 weeks, and was weighing morning and late afternoons just out of curiosity, so I know it was very consistent... ordered pizza for dinner because we were tired and wanted to relax rather than cook. I had 3 medium slices of pepperoni, mushroom, and green pepper and washed it down with water, not coke. Within 24 hours, I gained 4 pounds, and it took me a week to get that back off. I assume a lot of it was the sodium, but whatever, it told me I did not need to eat pizza very often. I do love it, though.

Re: What slows your weight loss?

Since posting this, I strongly pared back my daily intake of cheese and cream to about an ounce or so a day of each or not at all, and also reduced my intake of sodium-laden foods. I lost a couple pounds of water-weight that I was up that day over my low and then proceeded to lose a pound a day for 4 days in a row.

Ate some salty foods yesterday, and immediately went up two pounds which I know will come right back off.

Can't attribute the quick loss specifically to the reduction in cream, cheese, or salt since I reduced all at the same time, probably a combination of the three, but whatever, I'm happy about it!

                            Thanks for your comments!
