  • Half and Half

I have yet another question lol. I am on day 2 of extended induction and have lost 11 pounds so far and on cravings are pretty much gone. I have had the occasional coffee in the morning with a tbsp or heavy cream and 1 packet of splenda. My question is, I really would like some coffee for a mid day pick me up, they don’t have heavy cream here, they only half and half and milk. I know milk is out of the question, but is half and half okay. I looked it up and it says 1 carb for 2 tbsp. Is that right? Should I stay away from it?

Half and half is half milk.

Yes, I know that half and half is half milk. I was just wondering if anyone knew that since it was half cream, does it compensate for the carbs in milk and make it okay to have 1 tbsp.

Milk is not allowed during Induction. Mixing it with cream makes no difference. You mix an Induction food with a non-Induction food... the result is a non-Induction food.

Where is "here"? At work? If so, do you have a refrigerator there? Can you bring your own heavy cream and keep it in the fridge?

A lot of offices have a fridge for the employees to put their brown bag lunches.

Since the topic is cream, what about just Coffee creamer. The heavy cream leaves a weird aftertaste to me. I bought some Coffee Cream but have not tried it yet. Is this okay during extended induction?

What are the ingredients in the Coffee Creamer? Some of them have corn syrup or sugar and other ingredients that are not allowed on induction. You will probably find that the ingredients are not allowed on Induction.

Coffee creamers (the powder stuff) are not allowed on Atkins.

Induction is only 2 weeks, then after a sort stint on Rung one you will be able to have the 1/2 and 1/2 so stick it out cleanly. It will be over soon. If they have 1/2 and 1/2, there must be a fridge, right? I would get a little jar and bring a little cream to keep at the office.

Not everyone does a "short stint" on rung one ... adding more vegetables and trying out new ones is very often means a longer time on this rung.

                      Re: Half and Half

Thanks everyone for the replies. I ended up not doing not going with half and half and just put a packet of splenda and was able to tolerate it.
When I said “here”, I was referring is to work. Our fridge in our department is actually broken. We have a café downstairs with different kinds of coffee and they have milk and half and half as the only options. Once the fridge is back on, I will be bringing the heavy cream with me in case I need it like yesterday. I have seen International Delight French Vanilla “Sugar Free” and it says 1 carb per tbsp and 0 carbs of sugar but it is sweetened with splenda. Is that okay to have on induction?
Again, thank you all for your replies.

No ... in fact it's not ever OK on Atkins! It's a true frankenfood. It may have Splenda, but the other ingredients are icky, disgusting, and not at all Atkins friendly.

Here's the ingredients in the regular:

(Non-Dairy Product) Water, sugar, palm oil, corn syrup, contains 2% or less of each of the following: Sodium caseinate* (a milk derivative), dipotassium phosphate, natural and artificial flavors, mono and diglycerides, sodium stearoyl lactylate, carrageenan, salt.
*Sodium caseinate is not a source of lactose.

Heavy cream has 1 carb, half/half has 2. I wouldn't worry about it all that much, unless you use a LOT of cream.
Heavy cream can taste too buttery, so I use less.
