Re: What is wrong with more than three cups of veggies?

From what I understand of ADBB, the moderators here pretty much adhere to the letter of DANDR 2002 because they have found it to be the most effective for weight loss, healthy living, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle after reaching goal weight. If I'm not mistaken, since Dr Atkins' passing, the website no longer reflects 100% of his original plan as outlined in DANDR. There are times I get a little frustrated with the strict adherence to DANDR here, but really I know it's what's best for me at this time in my life.

      My 2 net carbs.......

I would like to see a study comparing the weight loss of DANDR 2002 Induction and the Atkins.com's Induction. And when I mean a study, I mean a study....not a bunch of extrapolations of non-Atkins studies applied to Atkins.

      As for non-included veggies
beet greens----I agree, they are 100% more tasty than spinach.
Mache is tasty too. Unfortunately it doesn't travel well, so you either have to grow it yourself or find a farmer's market/gourmet shop that sells it.
Scallions: good onion flavor that is lower in carbs than a regular onion. So it's a pity that veggie isn't included because it gives you the taste of onion without the carbs of a yellow, white or red onion.
Dandelion greens: excellent veggie---higher in vitamins and minerals than most veg. Plus it's used in traditional medicine as a diuretic and a general liver/kidney cleanser.
Sorrell: another gourmet veggie like mache. Adds a lemony flavor without the lemon juice carbs. Again, it's a pity that wasn't included because it saves carbs without sacrificing flavor.
Bean sprouts and string beans: good veggies too.

I know what you mean Suzanna. Sometimes I just want to throw that book at the wall and sometimes I do throw it on the wall. Rule this and rule that

But I need a plan - when it comes to foods I have no common sense - it is so sad - but I was obese. It is howI got there. So having a plan keeps me safe. Maybe there are people out there that can be loosy goosy about stuff. I am not one of them.
So I also love my book. I know I owe every pound I have lost to that guy Dr. Atkins and his wild and wacky plan.

I know that the 2002 DANDR does not list that, but it was written awhile ago. Even Dr. Atkins updated his prevoius book. I know that Atkins.com has added items like bars and shakes as being used in certain cases of induction, but does 12-15 net carbs of veggies make sense. It sounds like you get more fiber that way too.

This is exactly why I use a food scale. Not only are my measurements and tracking *much* more accurate, but I eat a lot more veggies.

Doing so was sanctioned by the Atkins Center 7 years ago when Dr. Atkins was still running stuff. I know because I called and asked them myself

The vegetables you mentioned are included ... the point was that the the list at Atkins.com isn't correct.

Why they can't/won't fix it is beyond me ... and has been since August of 2008.

I'm basing my comments on what Reborn Warrior wrote in her post:

Atkins.com does not list mache, sorrel, scallions, dandelion, bean sporouts, string beans, and beet greens.
              Sorry if you misunderstood.

Amazing isn't it? They can develop and introduce all their new Atkins Brand convenience foods but they can't get their webmaster to update their website....boggles the mind..................

Thank you so much for posting this link, as it's amazing!

As you make clear, the issue here is the weight of the food, rather than the physical size of the portion. The tricky part is that the number of grams that equals one cup of food X may be different from the number of grams that equals one cup of food Y. I can't tell you how many times I've jumped onto nutrition.gov at the last minute to try to find the proper weight of the fruit or veggie I want to eat. This list is fantastic for resolving this conundrum and I'll be printing this out.

I love, love, LOVE this list! I printed it out a long time ago, and use it often. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...CARB_COUNT.pdf What perfect sense it makes, to use the weight of something, rather than "eyeball" what a cup of something like broccoli is?

I know that there are many who don't want to be bothered with weighing food, and there are many success stories out there from people who never weighed their food. But for someone as carb-sensitive as I am, and as OCD as I am (I love accuracy in measuring), it is just so worth it to whip out my inexpesive little food scale from Walmart, and weigh my food. And I agree with Brook - I'm eating more veggies by doing this. I was definitely on the "light" sight when eyeballing how much a cup of something irregular-shaped is. And it's amazing just how many veggies you can eat without "spending" a lot of carbs. That's important for those of us who don't have a whole lot of carbs to spend.

Look - about the cups issue: I think this is the single greatest reason for leaving Induction and moving to OWL after 2 weeks. That first rung in OWL is nothing to fear... it just more vegetables! They are vitamin and mineral packed, provide fiber, and add so much variety in your menu. Once you get past a clean, 2 week Induction, you can go to Rung 1 and relax about the cups thing... you're adding 5g net of veggies in Rung 1 (not cups). You are now focusing on counting carbs, rather than obsessing over cups, of the veggies that you eat. As long as you are getting most of your net carbs from veggies and are staying away from higher rung veggies, you are good to go!

Ah, Rung 1... What a great place to start increasing your net carbs in that all-important task of finding your CCLL (Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing). For me (and most people I would guess), veggies are the safest kind of carb to increase when testing your numbers for CCLL. As long as you don't add a new veggie and increase your carb number in the same week, you can start upping your numbers with safe veggies to get an idea of how many net carbs you can "spend" and still lose weight in OWL. For example, using this method, I discovered that I could lose weight at 35g net carbs, at the same rate as I was losing at 20g net. Knowing this number allowed me to move to the other rungs with more carbs to "spend", without having to sacrifice veggies to free up carbs. When you know how many net carbs you can spend and still lose weight, it makes it so much easier to distinguish food intolerances. When your rate of loss is interrupted, you know it is the kind of carb, and not the number of carbs, that was the problem.
