Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

It's happened to me many times. I usually do not bring up what I am eating, but if somebody asks how I am losing weight, I tell them Atkins. Usually the biggest misconception people have is that on Atkins we eat NO carbs, which is totally false.

Arm yourself with information that disspells all their concerns, and next time someone asks you, you won't even flinch.

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

I never use the word "Atkins" anymore because I no longer have the energy to explain it to someone who is not really interested in hearing that Atkins isn't as awful as the popular press would have people believe.

I usually say that I avoid sugar, processed foods, and refined carbs, and find that the reaction is always positive, supportive, and usually accompanied with a comment along the lines of, "I really should do that, too."

        Lollerskates...good laughs throughout this thread!

One of my coworkers gives it to me really hard all the time. We have dieted together in the past and she is really quick to give everything up and make excuses. It makes it hard to do anything with her in terms of dieting. The last diet we did together was Jenny Craig and she was a total nightmare. So when I decided to give Atkins another shot, I didn't tell her until she noticed how I was eating. It caused major problems and everyday she tells me how unhealthy I am eating. I had Boars Head Chicken breast and swiss cheese with mustard on Iceberg lettuce for lunch. She had egg rolls. Yeah, I am the unhealthy one!

I love the laughs I've gotten from this thread...

I don't have any trouble at home and very little at work. Everyone knows I'm on the Atkins way of life... Sometimes, people around here ask themselves, is this something Sandra would eat and think twice before putting it in their mouths. LOL I love it!

I think one of the most amusing [irritating] things is, after I tell someone - then the next time I see them they ask 'are you still doing that?'...I have to keep explaining I will always be doing this

Of course, you could always tell them that you're a vampire and you sustain yourself on meats and cheeses in order to refrain from taking human life.

*laughing* excellent...my boss asked me what I was doing to lose all the weight he noticed I lost...I said Atkins...he did the 'shock horror' face...I said um Im no longer taking insulin...my cholesterol is around 3...BP is fine...Im walking 4-6 kilometres a day...my skin is clear...my brain unfuzzy....which bit is bad? He then said his wife was over weight and never had success with a diet...I said its not a diet...its a shift in headspace...a new perspective on eating...and smiled sweetly...

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

To add my recent experience, which made me laugh...I saw the local "flight surgeon" (I'm an air traffic controller and have to maintain a medical clearance for my job) about three weeks ago. He said to me, "Well, your weight and blood pressure are both down, your heart sounds great, and you seem really happy...I don't know what you're doing, but keep doing it!" I told him I was doing Atkins, and surprisingly, he was well-informed about the plan and didn't try to dissuade me. (My regular MD was a bit of a tougher sell, but even she admits I've improved quite a bit in the last two months!) Many other people I know are skeptical, but I enjoy proving people wrong

I will ONLY weigh once per week! I will refer to DANDR 2002 and this forum when I have questions. I will revel in new recipes, new clothes, and the new feeling of being happy in my skin. I will hold myself accountable to do this the right way, without excuses, because I know that Atkins is the best thing for my health and happiness. I. Will. Succeed!

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

When people learn I used to be 243lbs at my highest weight and a size 22 and see me now they always ask "How'd you do it? " , like I hold the secret to the Fountain of Youth - and ya know what? In some ways I *do*.

I ATKINS!!!! from the tallest tower and when people start popping off, I simply " Do you really want to know the truth or are you just interested in telling me what your sister's boyfriend's cousin's best friend's uncle's mechanic says he saw on Hard Copy?"

I refuse to call it anything besides "Atkins", because Dr. Atkins and his program are the reason why I've been the healthiest I've ever been for the last SEVEN years. Yeah. I said it. SEVEN YEARS.

Turns out, I didn't from a heart attack, and neither did Dr. A.

Turns out my triglycerides, cholesterol, and heart are not only healthier, but exceptionally healthy by *any* standard.

Turns out I now have one instead of two 's.

Turns out I'm now a certified fitness instructor - something I could never have accomplished had it not been for me following ATKINS.

I've heard every argument in the world against it - from calcium deficiency ( )to kidney failure ( )to "It's all water weight" (Boy....was I overly moist!! To the tune of about 100lbs!! Thirsty, anyone? ) to "You can't eat all that fat and be healthy" (Here are *my* numbers, what are yours? ) to "You can't maintain that way of eating for any real period of time." (Really? So let's stack my SEVEN YEARS against your "any period of time") to "If you go off it you'll gain all the weight back." (No Sherlock. If you go back to eating the way that got you , you're gonna get again!).

I've heard it all. And I'm still healthier, happier, and in better shape than almost everyone that's about it. Sure. I've slipped up and gained a few back a couple of times in the last 5 years (three times, actually, but I NEVER get past a size 10 and I get back to my 6/8's in no time.), but I find my way back and get smarter each time.

And in a pinch, if someone pops off about the way I eat, I'll look them dead in the face and "Did I ask you for an opinion?"

There's more than one way to get someone to and be about it and still give credit where credit is due.

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

Honestly the military uses low carb diets to get recruits down to an acceptable weight. If its good enough for the U.S military then I don't see how any one can complain. First time I saw a recruiter he said to go on a low carb diet and come see him again in a few months. Hopefully in those few months I'll be an acceptable weight.

Though I also admit I usually call it a low carb diet instead of Atkins, but if some one tries to give them crap I tell them to talk to my recruiter. Nothing wrong with Atkins infact The last couple days I've been feeling better since starting it. I have almost no appetite, perhaps too little of an appetite. I have the same energy if not more than before I started. And I've lost 4-5lbs my first 2 days.

I was on atkins before and lost 30lbs in well under a month before, but I fell off for a while and gorged. But I didn't gain it all back atleast. I also know if I ever wish to leave the atkins plan I have to slowly ween myself off now also.

If anyone tells me I'm eating "unhealthy", I counter it with "why's that?" I always have facts to "educate" them with. I've read the book and know my stuff, so I dare someone to try to tell me I'm eating a dangerous "diet."

For people I don't know, I might just tell them I'm eating low-carb. If they pry farther, then they're gonna hear it lol.
