Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

I always chose to take the negativity of others as just that much motivation on those tough days to ensure I was successful, and that I could eventually rub their face in it. I still use it to prevent the "looks" when even internal motivation is lagging. I realize not everyone likes being chastised or being a spokesperson, but being proved right over and over again as they fail on their diets is great feeling.

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

My younger sisters are both really over weight too. We have found we really can't eat a lot and loose weight. They don't try to tell me how to eat. We do talk about what has worked and what hasn't and compare notes. They have both tried Atkins. I still believe they didn't do it the same way I do, so we have talked about it. I firmly believe no one likes to eat as much as I do and I know for a fact I can eat both of my sisters under the table! Its very frustrating to not be able to help them more. I think most of the Atkins bashers are just too addicted to their carby foods to give it a real go or stay on it. They complain about it being unhealthy and eat garbage at their next meal! That's what I find offensive, people that want me to defend eating whole foods, meat and veggies when nowhere can they defend the white flour and white sugar they eat! No one would mistake their diet as healthy! If someone is determined to believe that Atkins is unhealthy, I tell them I don't care, I want to look good at my funeral and leave it at that! Mean but true. I don't mind saying I am vain, and not even doing it for my health in the first place! That I actually eat real food and got healthy is merely a side-effect!

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

      1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
      2nd mini goal: 140!
      3rd mini goal:135!
      4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

I just tell people that I eat like a caveman (woman in my case) . Meat and veg. You never saw a caveman eating a loaf of ciabatta?

This made me smile. One of the things my friends will tell you I say is, " You ever see a skinny cow or a fat tiger?"

            LOL

I tell them I eat meat and vegetables, and have cut flour sugar and starchy food out altogether. They love that. But when you say "Atkins," they flip out.

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

Sadly, I thought missing meals, or weight watcher was the way to go in highschool. I had been brainwashed into thinking Atkins was bad. I would tell people it was dangerous. That's what the mags all said about Atkins while pimped the grapefruit diet on another page. At 235 pounds I found I could announce I hadn't eaten hardly anything in a week and people would encourage me! I had tried so many diets, people didn't care how I got it off anymore. To most people, thin equals healthy no matter what. For most of my weightloss journey no one has given a flying flip about my health. I proudly tell people Atkins was how I did it. I eat healthy on Atkins plus it works. I don't mind telling people about it. People have dangerous surgeries to get the weight off. Most people I meet think Atkins is the safer way to go!

People are funny. They would rather you say you took diet pills, had gastric surgery or drank Slimfast for five years than had found a way of eating for life. I recently saw a former co-worker who is still waiting for me to fail or collapse and die because of Atkins. She has gained at least 100 pounds. Guess what? I haven't!!! LOL

Something tells that co-worker could live a very long life, and she will never have the satisfaction of you following her example, IrishIrish.

Re: Telling people I'm on Atkins

Some folks I don't bother with and just say "low carb," but others, especially those whom I feel maybe this WOE could help, I tell them it is Atkins. I almost always immediately follow that up with "you know, meats and a little cheese and vegetables and small amounts of fruit and nuts..." and they always, with ONE exception in 5 months, have a look of surprise on their face. They have NO IDEA what Atkins actually involves and that you can eat such variety. Then if they are interested beyond that, I explain further.

I believe most people have a bad image of Atkins because all they know is what their cousin's husband's best friend's father did when he was on "Atkins" and all he ate was eggs and bacon and cheese and butter and other fried meat for a month and then quit. With that one exception, NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM realized you can't just eat unlimited amounts of fat and meat and cheese forever and also not one of them realized you not only CAN have vegetables, but HAVE to eat vegetables to actually be on Atkins. You can almost see their negative thoughts disappear once you tell them in a simple sentence or two that you eat salads and vegetables and that most people do Atkins wrong and don't really understand how to do it correctly because they never read the book.

It's nice to rid the world of some ignorance sometimes.
