  • Hello, I'm new - and would like some advice!

    Hello everyone,

I started my first low carb diet on Monday, more seriously from Tuesday.
So I have been on this diet for about 3days.

I've not lost any weight and was feeling ok (only slightly spaced out on occasions) though today I think I'm losing my appetite. And the best thing of all is that I'm not craving a single thing. I'm happy to eat whatever I'm allowed.

I am slightly concerned that I've not noticed any weight change and wondered that IF somehow I'm making any silly mistakes, is that going to stop the diet working for me?

    E.g Yesterday

Breakfast: almond pancakes with protein shake
    Lunch: Tuna salad with mayo
Dinner: 2 soya pieces (quorn) with stir fry veg cooked in oil with some cream. (quite a large portion)

I mostly drink water or squash (no added sugar & I read the label)

And I do read labels on anything I buy!!

I did have a cup of tea with sweetner yesterday and I have bought a low carb chocolate, which I eat one square of if I crave sweet stuff (only 1 per day).

I basically want to make sure that I'm doing it all right?! I don't want to carry on if I'm doing anything wrong. Just want you guys to confirm it for me... and when will i notice any weightloss? Or when should I notice it by?

And my last 3 questions lol... what happens to all the fat I'm putting into my body? And does anyone know where I can get lowcarb sausages?

I'm eating at Nandos tomorrow, is it ok to eat the skin off the chicken?
    And is sweetcorn ok?

That is enough now I guess...
    Thanks in advance

Nuts are not allowed during Induction.

What are the ingredients in the protein shake?

    Lunch: Tuna salad with mayo
What's in the tuna salad? Do you make it yourself?

    Dinner: 2 soya pieces (quorn)
Not allowed during Induction. And they likely have sugar in them too (e.g., dextrose)... and/or wheat.

    with stir fry veg
What veggies? Do you measure them?

How many net carbs are you eating daily? How many come from vegetables?

    some cream.
    How much cream?

I mostly drink water or squash (no added sugar & I read the label)
Squash does not count as water. What are the ingredients in it? And sweeteners are limited to 3 per day. As a rule of thumb, each 8 oz of sweet drink counts as 1 serving of sweetener.

It would be better if you drank water.

And I do read labels on anything I buy!!
That won't really help unless you are familiar with the Acceptable Foods List.

    low carb chocolate
Not okay to eat during Induction.

I eat one square of if I crave sweet stuff
Feeding cravings won't really help you kill your sweet tooth...

Instead, if you must eat, you could eat a pickle, an egg, some cheese instead, celery stuffed with cream cheese...

If only something sweet will do it, then at least eat something appropriate for Induction.

and when will i notice any weightloss?
There is no deadline. When it will happen, you'll notice it.

    Take body measurements too.

what happens to all the fat I'm putting into my body?
It's used as your body's primary source of fuel, together with body fat. That's ketosis.

And does anyone know where I can get lowcarb sausages?
Sausages should be low carb... but since you are in the UK (from your mention of squash), it might be difficult to find sausages without rusk or some form of sugar in them.

I'm eating at Nandos tomorrow, is it ok to eat the skin off the chicken?
Depends what's on the skin. What spices. It could be sugar in them. And chicken is sometimes injected with a sugary solution.

    And is sweetcorn ok?
No. Check the Acceptable Foods List for foods that are allowed during Induction: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html

What's in the tuna salad? Do you make it yourself?

I don't - it gets ordered from a local cafe. It's all fresh and consists of lettuce, cucumber, bit of coleslaw & sweetcorn. (I just dont know the contents of the mayo)

      Soya
You say I can't eat Soya.... I eat meat but am not allowed to bring it in the house as my whole family are vegetarian...What do you suggest I eat in its place? Surely I can't just eat vegetables...?

I have worked out that 10-15 carbs comes from the veg I eat.

Squash does not count as water.
      100ml undiluted = 0.8g carb/sugar
And I use a tiny amount, literally 3ml for slight flavour (only 2-3glasses at work)
And sweeteners are limited to 3 per day. As a rule of thumb, each 8 oz of sweet drink counts as 1 serving of sweetener.

I had one cup of tea this week so I think I'm ok. I didnt even drink all of it????

That won't really help unless you are familiar with the Acceptable Foods List.

There are so many lists around that say slightly different things to each other and not all in as much detail as the one you sent me.. so I'm doing it slightly tweaked. I've only just started so you're right I'm not totally familiar with the accepted foods!

Depends what's on the skin. What spices. It could be sugar in them. And chicken is sometimes injected with a sugary solution.

I just wont eat the skin.. no big deal.. though their ingredients lists shows there isn't any.

What I want to know is.. .IF I am making all these mistakes you pointed out... are they big enough to stop the diet working at all?
I have to be veg at home so finding stuff to eat can be difficult.
I don't really want to make the diet unbearable. If I am having the a gram of sugar or whatever per day is that going to ruin the diet???

You probably need to read the book. Or at least browse the stickers in the FAQ forum.
Most of the foods you are going to have to eat is protein and fat. I am not sure how you plan to do that. The problem with soy is that it comes with carbs. Meat, eggs, and fish are carb free things. Those are the ones we rely on. Can you not eat eggs or fish at home?

Corn is not allowed. Vegetables have to be controlled. This is a low carb diet.

How much do you want to lose? You forgot to include your stats.

          Hi

I can eat eggs, but I get stomach pains from that! Not sure why... if I get it scrambled, fried or as an omlette I have pains for the next hour.

I can't eat fish at home.. really annoying... should I just give up now!?

I don't need to lose a large amount... only around 10-14pounds.

          I'm 5,3 and weigh 8stone 5.
I use to be a stone lighter so wanted to get back to that.

Thanks again for your advice everyone.

Well I think you cannot do Atkins as we do here strictly by the book. But you may be able to find a way for you to lose weight incorporating some of the principles of low carbing. I am assuming you are young so you will have a nice peppy metabolism to go with it. You could cut out refined carbs - eat your complex carbs like soy or beans stay away from sugars and sugar substitutes and see how you feel.
If eggs bother you maybe you have an sensitivity to them. Perhaps those protein shakes (as long as they are not too carby) would be good to try out. Perhaps work in some cocunut oil here and there. I have a teaspoon in my tea.

Exercise would help you a lot too.

Four ounces of cheddar have the same amount of protein as two roasted chicken drumsticks.

Since you are able to eat cream for dinner, then you should be able to eat cheese too.

So for a protein source, use cheese instead of Quorn. Quorn contains non-Induction ingredients.

Also, at your weight, you could start Atkins in OWL. Or even read Atkins for Life and follow the guidelines there.
