  • From Couch to 5K !!!

Winter is nearing and I am trying to get through the holiday season without carb creep and weight gain. I've decided to change up my exercise routine and get back into jogging. The program is called Couch to 5K. I am starting tomorrow. It's too cold up North to exercise outside so I am going to do this on my treadmill. It consists of alternating walking with jogging three days a week for about 20 minutes each progressing for 9 weeks up until you can run 5K! Has anyone tried this? Here's the link for anyone who is interested:

Yes did it last spring and loved it.
I now jog routinely as part of my exercise. I run 3 days a week 6ks and 10ks.
The programme was wonderful. It worked. It was really hard in the beginning. I could not run 20 seconds without being without breath. But sticking to the programme worked. There were some weeks I did twice but that did not hinder me in completing it. I did it outside. It will be easier with the timing inside on a threadmill for sure.
There were some people trying to get started on a a C25K programme in the exercise forum recently but not sure if they stuck to it.

Re: From Couch to 5K !!!

This sounds GREAT!!! SOOOO many years ago i ran/ jogged/ walked very, very briskly, but there is nothing like really running to bump up stamina and to locate a certain brain niche that makes for clear thinking and effective problem solving. This may sound a bit wierd but other than getting into shape these two things were the real bonuses for me loooong ago when i was into running (pre husband, pre kids, cute clothes, on a distant continent .... wow life has certainly changed!) I NEVER THOUGHT that i could get back into running again - hoping that walking would fill the void but alas it helps me tho it's not the same. This program looks like a huge window of oppurtunity!

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH for posting this link - will definately try it - Perhaps tomorrow December 1 would be a good starting point, but if i get to walk today i'll try to do a 'preliminay kind of prep - can't wait to be a runner again!

There's a C25K app for the ipod that's amazing--you can use your own playlist and there are audio cues for when you run/walk--that way you can just enjoy the music instead of watching the time. It has a silhouette of a man against a green background-called C25K. Worth it.

Re: From Couch to 5K !!!

This is the perfect timing for me! I'm starting my exercise routine today and wanted to get back into jogging slowly as it has always allowed me to lose weight easily. I work so hard from May, and usually until the beginning of October, but this year things went until this past week-end. I usually work 12-16 hour days during that time, and what I do is very physically demanding, but cardio wise I know I need to bump it up. Thanks so much for posting this.

Re: From Couch to 5K !!!

Thanks for the post! I really want to try this. In the past, with my weight, I'd end up with sore knees & feet. Then I couldn't even do my morning walk for a couple of days. I tried again a couple of weeks ago, and found out that my new tennis shoes don't provide enough support. Even when I walk more than 1 1/2 miles I get some numbness in my 2 last toes.
Does anybody have suggestions on what type shoes to get? I like New Balance. Do you get jogging shoes for this type of training?
