  • Orange Cauliflower?

I haven't found any threads on the topic...

My DH brought home an orange cauliflower. After researching online, I see there's purple varieties as well...

Anybody know the complete label nutrition facts? As I understand it, it's identical to regular cauliflower in terms of carbs, sugar, protein, etc., but apparently it has a different vitamin content...

I couldn't find anything about it. As you said, the macronutrients are the same as for regular cauliflower... and Wikipedia says that it has 25 times more vitamin A... but that's about it.

I had no idea there is such thing as orange cauliflower. The purple one looks cool too!

You might want to try calling your state's farm extension bureau for that info. If they don't have it, they might be able to direct you to the people who do have it.

I've seen the seeds advertized in seed catalogs, but since cauliflower doesn't grow well in my backyard, I haven't tried growing it.

I did, I didn't get all the info I was looking for...

Apparently orange (and purple) cauliflower is a new genetic mutation of cauliflower, only been around since 2004...

Tastes identical to regular "white" cauliflower... it's just a festive color more than anything...

It reminds me of my Girl Guide days when we played with food colouring and made all sorts of odd coloured foods by adding it to the cooking water one camping week.

                      Here's what I found:
All About Cauliflower: Easy How-To Cooking Tips & Advice: RecipeTips.com

                      Purple Cauliflower:
This variety of cauliflower has a purple colored curd rather than white as on regular cauliflower. It cooks faster than white cauliflower and has a little milder taste. When cooked, its color changes from purple to green. Purple cauliflower can be substituted for white in most recipes.

                      Orange Cauliflower:
An orange colored cauliflower that is a new variety that became available in some supermarkets and farmers' markets in the fall of 2003. It is very similar to regular white cauliflower in taste and appearance except it is bright orange in color. The first variety of orange cauliflower, which was smaller and not as flavorful, was discovered in Canada in 1970 but it took decades of crossbreeding to finally develop the variety that is now available. Because of its high content of beta-carotene, orange cauliflower's vitamin A content is approximately 25 times higher than white cauliflower. Its color and nutritional value are two characteristics that will make this a poplular vegetable choice.

                      Broccoflower:
A vegetable that is a cross between broccoli and cauliflower. Its appearance is the same as cauliflower except it is light, bright green in color. It has a slightly sweeter taste than regular cauliflower when eaten raw and when cooked, its taste is similar to broccoli. It can be prepared, cooked, and served in the same way you would regular cauliflower.

From Wikipedia Cauliflower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
                      • Orange cauliflower (B. oleracea L. var. botrytis) contains 25 times the level of Vitamin A of white varieties. This trait came from a natural mutant found in a cauliflower field in Canada.[5] Cultivars include 'Cheddar' and 'Orange Bouquet'.

                      • Green cauliflower of the B. oleracea Botrytis group, is sometimes called broccoflower or brocliflower/broccliflower. It is available both with the normal curd shape and a variant spiky curd called "Romanesco broccoli" Both types have been commercially available in the US and Europe since the early 1990s. Romanesco's head is an example of a fractal image in nature, repeating itself in self-similarity at varying scales.[6] Green curded varieties include 'Alverda', 'Green Goddess' and 'Vorda'. Romanesco varieties include 'Minaret', and 'Veronica'.

                      • Purple cauliflower also exists. The purple color is caused by the presence of the antioxidant group anthocyanin, which can also be found in red cabbage and red wine.[7] Varieties include 'Graffiti' and 'Purple Cape'. In Great Britain and southern Italy, a broccoli with tiny flower buds is sold as a vegetable under the name "purple cauliflower." It is not the same as standard cauliflower with a purple curd.

According to the Daily Plate, Broccoflower has 25 cals, 5g carb, 3g fiber, 2g protein for 1/5 of a head. Cauliflower has 25 cals, 5.3g carbs, 2.5g fiber, 2g protein per cup. The broccoflower has way more vitamin C and A.

From this I would conclude that color in vegetables is a VERY GOOD THING! I found that the same rang true for red cabbage. While red cabbage is higher in carbs (7g versus 4.83g in white cabbage), the vitamin A and C amounts were way higher giving the red much more nutritional bang per carb than the white.

                        Awesome, thanks so much!

I will definitely keep eating the orange cauliflower - I like the veggie anyway, and getting the extra nutrients is a bonus!

I also have a broccoflower that I'll be experimenting with in the fridge as I type.

I like red cabbage but not as much as green (or white)... but since you point this out, I'll switch out my cabbage snack with red next time around!

I had orange cauliflower for dinner tonight. What I like about it is that my mind thinks there is cheese on it (because of the color) even when there is only butter. AND, when I do put cheese on it, I only need a little because it LOOKS like there is a lot.

Love the broccoflower too. Haven't tried the purple cauliflower yet...don't know if I want purple veg on my plate. I love the colored cauliflowers (except purple) although I still use the white one for my faux mashed potatoes.
