We have a very dear friend who is a bachelor (and quite eligible, too, all you single ladies... LOL) whom we frequently invite after church for dinner or just hang out with us. He invited us to dinner last night as our Christmas gift, very thoughtful. The venue was beautiful, plate glass windows at the top of one of the taller buildings in downtown Tulsa, live jazz band and dance floor, very nice.
Now it's been a while since I braved a restaurant. First thing they brought a sliced baguette. I'm used to gnoshing on veggies before a meal and was quickly reminded I used to eat about a loaf of bread in a place like this before my meal arrived. LOL I buried my thoughts in the menu. Everything had either potato or pasta or polenta accompaniment. I asked the waitress about the vegetable of the day, and it was asparagus. I asked if the shrimp scampi could be served with the asparagus and hold the pasta. No problem. Also ordered the caesar house salad.
Salad arrived, and I realized I'd forgotten to ask them to hold the croutons. So, I picked through my salad to remove all the crumbs. The dressing didn't taste anything like my caesar at home, so I left quite a bit, wary of sugars. Then the scampi arrived and I received not a plate of shrimp with a side of asparagus, but a pasta bowl with a full inch deep of drippy scampi sauce, the asparagus all chopped up in the bottom of the bowl as if to replace the pasta and the scampi arranged on top. I finally gave up trying to eat the drippy mess as it was, and fished everything out of the bowl onto my bread plate to drain.
As my bowl was taken away our friend commented that I hadn't eaten much and should take some bread to mop up that good sauce. LOL He meant well. Dessert was included, evidently. Waiting for my coffee to arrive BAM the waitress slaps down a German chocolate cupcake in front of me. I swear I must have visibly jumped back because she gave me such a look! ROFL I passed the cake to my DH.
It was a good lesson in portion control. I thought for sure I'd be hungry once I got home, but I was fine. I did have some heartburn, though. Might have been something in that dressing as I suspected.
Anyhow. I survived!
Thank you all for helping me. I didn't want to have to admit to a cheat today. LOL
