  • Survived the restaurant

We have a very dear friend who is a bachelor (and quite eligible, too, all you single ladies... LOL) whom we frequently invite after church for dinner or just hang out with us. He invited us to dinner last night as our Christmas gift, very thoughtful. The venue was beautiful, plate glass windows at the top of one of the taller buildings in downtown Tulsa, live jazz band and dance floor, very nice.

Now it's been a while since I braved a restaurant. First thing they brought a sliced baguette. I'm used to gnoshing on veggies before a meal and was quickly reminded I used to eat about a loaf of bread in a place like this before my meal arrived. LOL I buried my thoughts in the menu. Everything had either potato or pasta or polenta accompaniment. I asked the waitress about the vegetable of the day, and it was asparagus. I asked if the shrimp scampi could be served with the asparagus and hold the pasta. No problem. Also ordered the caesar house salad.

Salad arrived, and I realized I'd forgotten to ask them to hold the croutons. So, I picked through my salad to remove all the crumbs. The dressing didn't taste anything like my caesar at home, so I left quite a bit, wary of sugars. Then the scampi arrived and I received not a plate of shrimp with a side of asparagus, but a pasta bowl with a full inch deep of drippy scampi sauce, the asparagus all chopped up in the bottom of the bowl as if to replace the pasta and the scampi arranged on top. I finally gave up trying to eat the drippy mess as it was, and fished everything out of the bowl onto my bread plate to drain.

As my bowl was taken away our friend commented that I hadn't eaten much and should take some bread to mop up that good sauce. LOL He meant well. Dessert was included, evidently. Waiting for my coffee to arrive BAM the waitress slaps down a German chocolate cupcake in front of me. I swear I must have visibly jumped back because she gave me such a look! ROFL I passed the cake to my DH.

It was a good lesson in portion control. I thought for sure I'd be hungry once I got home, but I was fine. I did have some heartburn, though. Might have been something in that dressing as I suspected.

Anyhow. I survived! Thank you all for helping me. I didn't want to have to admit to a cheat today. LOL

Sounds like a fun time and you did great! Those situations can be tricky. I am glad I made it through my two Christmas parties unscathed. lol

Both of my parties were more casual and I ate before I went "just in case".

You did wonderful. It is really amazing how much restaurants are willing to change things out if we just ask.

Hi Suzanne & Jane. I'm glad you both got through your events unscathed. It feels good to be able to go out and stay on plan, doesn't it?

My husband and I avoided restauraunts and movies and ...well, everywhere but home for months! Lately, we've been making a point of going out more often. Life is a balance - we need to be able to make our WOE work while still LIVING our lives

Sounds like a Beautiful Dining Room!
You did a good job there! It is very hard to eat at restaurants these days, so many things are so processed. Imagine, a lot of places even inject their steak with flavorings that include SUGAR!!! You think you would be safe ordering a piece of beef at a chain so you don't have to deal with all of the unknowns of the rest of the creations on the menu.

It is funny what most restaurants pass off as Caesar dressing now. Some creamy white sugar filled dressing from a bottle.

Original Caesar Dressing from Scratch, Prepared Tableside at upscale establishments (back in the day

            olive oil
            whole garlic cloves
            fresh lemon
            fresh grated Parmesan cheese
            fresh egg yolk
            Dijon mustard
            croutons
            cracked black pepper
            Salt
            romaine lettuce
            oil-packed anchovy fillets
            Worcestershire sauce

In recent times mayo has been added to make it more palatable and more acceptable to the eye, thus, the white, creamy appearance.

Thank you all for the encouragement. It's what makes ADBB so precious to me xoxox

Thank you Mission for that awesome recipe! It's very similar to the one in a recipe book I have from Montreal... makes vinaigrette just a little more awesome.
