My parents are coming for a visit. My dad(who is diabetic, by the way) doesn't believe in the Atkins way of eating. So I'm putting them on Atkins while they're here
Anyway, he likes to drink skim milk with meals. I've never done this since I don't like milk but I've heard others say they mix cream with water. Anyone know how much water/cream ratio to make it taste like skim milk? I also have some almond milk and might see if he'll drink that.

Think I gotta go with adkinsgal on this one... best way to "win" someone over to your way of thinking is to show them how much weight you've lost and how good you feel rather than force.Originally posted by atkinsgal08 View PostWhy not just buy him some skim milk?

If you were visiting someone, would you appreciate them forcing you to eat a certain way?

LOL. You are sooo funny!
What are you planning on doing, mixing the "faux" skim milk ahead of time and buying a carton of skim milk, emptying the milk out, and putting the "faux" water/cream mixture in the carton instead??? LOL.
Once I put the cheaper look alike generic brand of Cheerios in the real Cheerios box ( and tossed the generic box outside in the trash where the kids wouldn't see it) when the kids were little, and money was tight. They knew the difference right away after the first spoonful!!!259/206/149

Re: Heavy cream
Mixing cream with water works ok for making low-carb hot cocoa... but I don't believe it'll work as a milk replacement. And the almond milk takes some getting used to as does the CalorieCountdown low-carb milk.
Personally I'd simply pick up a few supplies to make guests comfy. I'm sure your father will appreciate the diabetic-friendly meals as well as applaud your weight loss.

Re: Heavy cream
if your dad is a diabetic chances are that he has been advised by a well meaning nutrionist to drink skim milk. i too, suggest that u buy a container of skim milk 4 him and ENJOY the visit. DOn't let it become a battle of my diet vs your diet...it seems 2 me that peace in your home/with your family, should be the priority. You're an adult and can choose what's best 4 u 2 eat and if u want respect for your way of eating, give your Dad respect for his.

Re: Heavy cream
Well, I will give you some support on your efforts!!!! My house, my rules, and this is in the best interest for you!!!! It really depends on how close you and your father are. With my mother, when she comes to my house she smokes outside... and my influence is so strong that when I go to her house, she puts her dog up in her room where he litterally destroys it and she smokes outside the whole time I am there which has been up to 2.5 weeks.
Many people view it as it is their life and they are the ones who have to make the decissions. I know first hand, that when you really think about it, your life affects everyone around you, your kids, your spouse, your mother, father, etc.
I'm going through some tough times right now with my own mother. She is 5 ft tall, weighs 333 pounds, smokes, has COPD , diabetic neuropathy, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and who knows what else.... She is almost to the point of having to have a wheelchair to go out and what does she choose to do about it... NOTHING!!!!
I get so mad and hurt by it because she doesn't think what if one of the times she is coughing and passes out and would die.. that I'm being shorted a mother for the rest of my life and my kids just lost their grandmother.
She doesn't think what happens if she falls and breaks something... what just send her to a nursing home.. .that is the last idea. I would prefer that my sisters and I take care of her, but how can we??? Does she think about this?
Not just that... my 4 year old even says she doesn't want to go to her house because she smokes. How do I rationalize this one?
Of course I know some of lifes events are God's will, but we also have control to choose our destiny!
So yes, we all make our own choices, but we should realize that our choices do effect those around us!!!
I applaud you for wanting to help your father, even if he is a little uncomfortable about it, it is showing him you love him... and hopefully he will get the message!!!
P.s. Sorry I do not know anything about the cream and water ratio! It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

Re: Heavy cream
Well, nothing like trying to get advice from this group to make you feel like cr*p!
When I visited them, I tried to explain to them what I eat. The fed me full of cheese and peas (Veggies, right?) I refuse to make 2 meals just to accomudate them. There is NOTHING wrong with the way I eat! I figured you guys would understand. Guess I was wrong again!

Re: Heavy cream
Susan, of course there is nothing wrong with the way you eat!
But trying to convince other people to change their way of eating when this is not what they want seldom works. It took me over a year to understand that no matter how much I praise Atkins and how many recipe ideas I give my parents, they won't change their way of eating. Or maybe they will one day, but that is not for me to decide.
You didn't like this, did you? You would have expected them to give you the foods you told them you can eat.The fed me full of cheese and peas (Veggies, right?)
There is nothing to gain from repeating their mistake.
You could make only one meal and maybe a starchy side for them, like potatoes, rice or pasta... something that takes only minutes to make.I refuse to make 2 meals just to accomudate them.
And skim milk.
In recipes, I use a part cream to approximately 3 parts water. But if you drink it just like that, it doesn't taste like skim milk.Anyone know how much water/cream ratio to make it taste like skim milk?"Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

I think we all do understand completely! We are just advising you to pick your battle, and in this case, it's not worth fighting. What do you get by possibly hurting their feelings or annoying them?Originally posted by susan423 View PostWell, nothing like trying to get advice from this group to make you feel like cr*p!

Hospitality sometimes demands these things. Just because they did not reciprocate, does not absolve you from doing the right thing as a gracious host.
My house is low carb, like, pretty strictly. We have a few higher carb stuff in the house for my child (mostly pasta items and breakfast cereal) but that's it. When I host my inlaws or my parents, we'll buy special off-plan things they like (I have an air-tight container of sugar I keep around just for my mom to have with her coffee and yes, they all drink skim milk) while they're with us.
It really isn't a big deal.

Re: Heavy cream
Of course there is nothing wrong with Atkins. But think to your visit with your parents when they wouldn't accomodate your diet. That made you feel that they weren't supportive of you and uncomfortable. Plus it made it difficult for you to stay on your diet. Now how do you think they will feel if you turn the tables on them? It seems more like a "you did this to me and now I'll do it to you" sort of thing.Originally posted by susan423 View PostWell, nothing like trying to get advice from this group to make you feel like cr*p!

I certainly don't like people imposing on the way I eat----didn't like it when I was a vegan and I don't like it now. And that's why I don't impose my eating style on others.
You don't have to make 2 completely separate meals for your parents and yourself. Whenever my non-low carb relatives come for a visit, I make a main dish everyone can eat (like a roast chicken), a vegetable side dish (like salad or sauteed veggies) everyone can eat, and I make potatoes/brown rice or have whole grain bread available for whoever wants to eat them.
For breakfasts, I do the eggs stuff, and again, I have whole grain toast or oatmeal for whoever wants to eat that.
What I don't do it stuff my pantry with junk: cookies, candy, cakes, sodas, processed garbage, etc.
I also think that alot of people have very wrong ideas about Atkins: all meat, all eggs, all cheese, all butter, no veg. And when they see Atkins being done properly, they begin to see it isn't as horrible as they believe it to be.
So let your dad have his skim milk. When he sees your food and compares it to what he is eating, it might change his mind.

That's true.
And you know what ... they feel the same way about how they eat.
As a hostess, your job is to make your guests feel comfortable.
Even if it's your parents.
