Re: starting right away vs. starting sometime soon

It all depends on how motivated a person is to change.. In behavioral medicine there is something called the stages of change cycle... There are stages a person goes through when he is considering change.
    The stages of change are:
    • Precontemplation (Not yet acknowledging that there is a problem behavior that needs to be changed)
    • Contemplation (Acknowledging that there is a problem but not yet ready or sure of wanting to make a change)
    • Preparation/Determination (Getting ready to change)
    • Action/Willpower (Changing behavior)
    • Maintenance (Maintaining the behavior change) and
    • Relapse (Returning to older behaviors and abandoning the new changes)
If a person is not motivated 100% (contemplation), and jumps to the diet, there are higher chances of him to quit. I think it is very important for a person to set a date first. That gives him enough time to prepare, and get ready to start.

I admit to everyone I AM struggling (Especially after this stupid diet change) I am BIG on education. I want to know why something works, I want to know HOW it works. When I was confronted I did not have enough information to stand strong for myself. Reading posts from people talking about percentages of this and that really started to overwhelm me and I felt a nagging feeling like I was doing things wrong. I feel like I need a lot more education on this whole thing. I really need a clearer picture of the science behind atkins. I still don't have the book and I am frustrated because I don't want to rely on everyone else's advice to decide if I am doing it right. Due to recent financial struggles a simple book has been a luxury that I haven't indulged in. I get a gift of cash at Christmas so my Christmas present to myself is buying the book December 27th! I will be restarting at that point, but I began this with my heart, to keep it up I need to understand it in my head.

I don't believe starting when I did was a mistake. When my dh got me to switch and my energy stalled I learned something valuable. When I started to get the hypoglycemia issues back I learned another very something valuable. I am sure I could have figured all this out had I started with the book, but life has always been my best teacher. With the next paycheck I am going back to Atkins eating because its what makes my body feel best (I did go to the store and grab atkins veggies halfway through our "diet" and some more protein... shhhh don't tell! I just felt so bad on the low fat, low cal junk).

I know everyone. I made a bad choice. I did do one thing right. I have been here every day reading this site and it is helping me so much. Just like this topic right here! Every time I read something it makes me think and better understand why and what I eat. That's something, but as much as I like it I KNOW I need the book.

your on the right track amandarose wanting to learn about health is one of the best things you can do to stay motivated the more you learn the more power you have and the less you will fall pray to the many health lies in this world keep at it reading these forums and such they will provide very useful and needed info and never put to much trust or faith into the health care system which is mostly just a business to make money

and as for not being able to afford to eat low carb atkins i used to be dirt poor in the past and whent off the diet because of that but if i knew what i knew now back then i would have stayed on the diet no matter what even being dirt poor i could have still just ate eggs and some beef fat and some food from the forest i lived near by it would have been a million times healthier than the foods i was eating while being poor like spagetti

also note you can eat alot of organic beef fat but not alot of non organic beef fat because of all the antibiotics/posions and fat absorbs posions more than meat but organic beef fat has no posions and also has vitamin K2 and omega-3 and such

i could type many more health things but i dont want to overwhelm you so il just give a few things for now

Ketosis Myths and Facts on the Low-Carbohydrate Diet.

this weblink explains about ketosis ketosis is something you enter during the start of the atkins diet and this link also has many other links to good info and supports the atkins diet

and this video shows an example how evil and dangerous this world is that people are allowed to sell food like twinkies to people

      --------

and this video explains about cholesterol and in short dont get a normal cholesterol test done because doctors will just scam you and put you on drugs even if you got good cholesterol

and really 1 out of 2 americans will die from a heart attack while say eskimo's who eat naturally a diet of up to 80% fat all of there people have zero heart disease , zero obesity , zero type 2 diabetes

fat and saturated fat is healthy to eat dont let anyone talk you into eating low fat.

only the man made fats and hydrogenated oils are bad because they were not made naturally by God

Re: starting right away vs. starting sometime soon

I think it depends very much on the person. Some really do need to "say farewell" to their beloved carbs... maybe a last gorge, maybe something more restrained.
In an ideal world we might all be strong enough to get through something like the Christmas holidays having only just started a weight loss programme... but reality is that not so many of us are that strong. Once you get started and into the routine, it's another matter.

I'd love to give the "start straight away" advice, but on the whole, I guess I'm more for "start when you feel relaxed about starting and when temptation is not likely to be all around you". It's also good to have time to read/learn/prepare.

        Nice topic Grant.

I also think there is no right or wrong about this. Some people need to be prepared others (like me) needs to get started and then gradually find out what it is all about. When I see someone say they will start on Monday or after the holidays or something one of my first feelings is that their hearts are not in the diet. They are just pushing a deadline in front of them but they will not really get there. But there is not really anything that I can say here that will change that. Maybe one day they will get the right kind of motivation and strength that doing a diet will actually take.

I think it's great to encourage and empower people....but, I don't think it's okay to tell them to jump right in, when they don't know how deep the water is. It's just like if your son or daughter would come home and say "I met someone at the bus stop, and he/she asked me to marry him/her." I don't think many of us would say "Go ahead and get married! If he/she turns out to be a serial killer, then you'll know better the next time (if there is a next time!)" Similarly, I don't think many of us would hand over our car key to our teenaged child (who hasn't taken a driving lesson) and say "Well, this is how you start the ignition and this pedal is the accelerator, this one is the brake, and move this thing here to D to drive forward. So get in and when you get to Nova Scotia, give me a call to tell me how you did on your trip. If you get a couple of tickets or get into an accident---don't worry! Just chalk it up to experience and keep on going!"

RE: the people who read the book.

I know plenty of people do read the book, are confused about something in it and ask a question here. And I know there are people who don't read the book, tell us they did read the book, and post a very basic question here. It's kind of obvious that you never read the book if you ask "I'm getting tired of eating only beef, can I eat chicken instead?", or "why can't I eat salad?" (believe me, those questions have been asked on ADBB by folks who swear they have read the book cover to cover.) Granted, it's possible to miss food items on the list (that's why I kept a copy of the Foods List with me during my Induction phase when I went shopping or to a restaurant), but to miss an entire food group kind of sets off alarms.

And I agree with liv. During my time on ADBB, I've met some very goal-directed folks whose desire to lose the weight was more important than falling off the diet for a beer or a slice of pizza. And I've met some folks who don't mind the occasional beer or pizza because they accept the slower weight loss. And I've met the folks who want to lose the weight fast but what their beer and pizza too. It boils down to one's priorities.
