  • Allergies?

I have oral allergy syndrome (I'm allergic to raw fruits and vegetables), which makes it difficult to adhere to the vegetable part of this diet, especially the salad part. It also makes portability more difficult because I can only eat cooked vegetables, but don't like eating cold cooked vegetables. I used to love salad, but can no longer eat it! I can eat canned fruits.

    Here's my menu so far:

    Breakfast:
    2 eggs, cooked in butter
    2 pieces Canadian bacon

    Lunch:
    2 pieces boiled chicken

    Snack:
    1 ounce of peanuts

    Dinner:
6 oz of meat or fish
    broccoli

    Snack
    1 oz. mascarpone cheese
4 oz canned pear halves packed in water

    Any suggestions?

Peanuts (any nut actually) are not allowed on Induction.

Pear isn't allowed on Induction either.

Do you have the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002)?

Do you have a way to heat up the already cooked vegetables? If not, can you carry them in a thermos so they stay hot?

Yes, I have the book. I included those two foods because of my limitations. I should clarify that I can eat SOME, but not all canned goods. I'm also not talking about a sensitivity or an intolerance -- a lot of foods I react severely to. I thought this diet would be perfect since I am now having problems with wheat. What do you recommend to replace my snacks with that doesn't involve too much more meat? I'd like to keep the cheese!

        >>I included those two foods because of my limitations.>>

How much do you have to lose?

It's possible that with such limitations, Atkins Induction or early OWL simply won't work for you. There are, however, other low carb plans that aren't as restrictive.

Pears are a very carby fruit ... even on maintenance I eat them rarely.

        >>I should clarify that I can eat SOME, but not all canned goods.>>

You can have cooked vegetables from fresh or frozen, they don't have to be canned.

        >>What do you recommend to replace my snacks>>

An answer you're not going to like ... vegetables.

Atkins is really about the vegetables ... more than 50% of your net carbs on any phase of Atkins will be coming from vegetables.

There's nothing in the book that says you have to eat raw veggies. In fact, all of the vegetables on the "Salad" list can be cooked----yes, including the lettuces! There is a classic French soup called "potage creme de laitue" and grilled romaine lettuce was all the rage in trendy restaurants for a few years.

So there is no need to avoid all veggies on Atkins.

alot of vegetables i don't like eating raw as well

try cooking broccoli fried in a frying pan with a lid on it with lots of unsalted butter then after 3 mins flip the broccoli and add crumbled feta cheese on it then put the lid back on for another 3 mins

it cooks the broccoli so its no longer crunchy and with lots of unsalted butter the broccoli flowers absorb the butter and the feta cheese makes it all taste good

also my gut can't handle fiber so i cut the stems completely off my broccoli so just the top flower part is left

Great idea!!! I have some fiber issues as well and didn't realize the fiber was in the stem! Thanks.

Thanks to those who made suggestions. Ziggy - that broccoli idea sounds great. I agree with what you said about the stems vs. flowers.

I am still going to stick with this, in spite of my limitations. I really was only looking for suggestions. I will try the broccoli dish with dinner, but I will still have to come up with some evening snacks that won't sabotage me. If I have to eat something twice, I guess it wouldn't kill me!

Are you snacking because you are hungry or is it only a bad habit?

                    Re: Allergies?

I usually have a little snack between finishing dinner and going to bed. The book says, "Do not go more than six waking hours without eating. Some people may need a snack at the four-hour mark." I am definitely on of those people. We usually finish dinner around 5:30 PM and go to bed around midnight. I usually have something around 8:00 - 8:30 PM. I've tried not to have anything, but I end up so hungry, I can't get to sleep.

                      Which book says this?

There is nothing wrong with eating every 4 hours... I hope it didn't come across that way. The only reason why I asked is because some people snack just for "fun"... which is nothing else than a bad eating habit.

The book is "The Atkins Essentials: A Two-Week Program to Jump-start Your Low-Carb Lifestyle." It's strictly the induction phase and just touches on the latter phases. It's the only Atkins book that was available for my Nook that included the induction phase. Because I can actually use my Nook at work with some of the books I have on it, I put that one on as well so I always have it handy.

Oh, okay. I'm at my parents and don't have that book with me.

I hope you have Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002) home.

                              Re: Allergies?

Cath, I prefer cooked veggies to raw (except during the summer when I can get garden fresh). Maybe it's an acquired taste eating cold, cooked veggies but I often do this to make up different veggie salads/mixes.

Have you looked at some of Linda Sue's recipes for veggies? Many of these are tasty cold too.

As an aside, I was on a low oxalate diet pre-Atkins. Most veggies are very high in oxalates which was a concern for me as I started Atkins. I found that I was able to eat lots of veggies but not too much of one kind at one time. Now after several months on Atkins, I don't have a problem with veggies at all. Maybe your allergies will change after a while on Atkins. If not, there are still plenty of ways to get your veggies in.
