SweetLeaf brand in the US uses inulin as the filler in their powder form. I'm not sure what other manufacturers use.

But you can find liquid stevia in health food stores and health/nutrition on-line stores. They even sell stevia products on some vegetable/flower seed catalogs!

same here...but strangely enough I was looking at a few different brands and um one was 84 carbs per 100ml....i was gobsmacked!...I took it to the counter and asked the nice man why on earth they stocked it...it was a powdered one but even so...sometimes suppliers are out of one brand and fill it in with another...Ive become slightly obsessive about labels!

            Re: splenda vs stevia

I have them all. I see no reason to have only one kind. They are different and often I mix them up. I have only used liquid stevia - and I think it is great (a little bit expensive though) I really like splenda - both the taste and the versatility of it - splenda is good in baking. My liquid splenda is a bottle of DaVinci. Here is Canada we can also get cyclamate which I think is a good sweetener.
The advantage with the liquid ones is that they have no carbs. The ones in packages have fillers with carbs (and which also may raise bloodsugars).

Liquid Splenda is my sweetener of choice, and I get it from www.sweetzfree.com. I've been a customer for years, and have always received a great product with excellent customer service.

                Re: splenda vs stevia

                Hello ladies... ;-)

I've been using a combination of Liquid Splenda and Liquid Stevia (1/2 & 1/2) since 2002. I find that the sweetening synergy from using them together gives a more sugar like taste.

You may find my comparison of composition, strength, cost and sources of currently available Liquid Splenda products helpful...post #3 of this thread:

My personal choice (for the most cost effective Liquid Splenda ;-) is to make my own from Quick Sweet pure Sucralose powder (test included in the thread above, details below:

For those interested in the convenience of ‘accurately’ mixing Liquid Sucralose, without the fuss of weighing to the nearest 100th of a gram or using approximate volume conversions, I would like to suggest you mix a 2 oz, pre measured, packet of Quick Sweet Sucralose Powder (available on-line at https://www.ahfni.com/store/sucralose.php ) in 1 cup less 2t water…

How much water do we need to mix with 2oz (56.7g) Sucralose powder?

A 25%w/v (weight/volume) Liquid Sucralose concentration requires 25g Sucralose powder mixed in 100 ml water.

Using a ratio: 25g is to 100ml water as 56.7g is to Xml water; cross multiplying we get X = 56.7*100/25; X = 226.8ml water

Using the Online Volume Conversion site at http://www.onlineconversion.com/ :

                226.8 milliter = 0.96 cups
                1c - 0.96c = 0.04c
                0.04c = 2t

Therefore 1c less 2t water mixed with a 2oz container of Quick Sweet Sucralose powder will yield a concentration of 25% w/v Liquid Sucralose at a strength of 185 times sugar where 1/4t = ~1c sugar equivalence.

My personal choice for Liquid Stevia is to make my own from NOW Brand Stevia Extract (white powder).

For those interested in the convenience of 'accurately' mixing Liquid Stevia, I would like to suggest you mix a 1 oz, container of NOW Brand Stevia Extract (available at most Health Food Stores and online at VitaGlo.com Atkins, NOW Vitamins, EAS, Protein Low Prices & FREE* Shipping! ) with 7.5 teaspoons water...

I mix the water into the container and shake. This results in a little more than half container full of Liquid Stevia at a strength of 192 times sugar where 1/4t = 1c sugar equivalence.

                ===============

                Happy Low Carbing... ;-)

I prefer stevia now an am a recovering splenda addict. LOL it triggers cravings for me, and I have read that people who try to sub with it end up gaining weight because of this. Also, I read splenda contains arsenic. Uh, thats a no brainer for me.

                        Re: splenda vs stevia

                        Sure..

The book "skinny bit**" written by 2 women one of which holds a masters degree in holistic nutrition. It is a #1 New York times best seller. It is chock full of excellent information on the foods we eat.

The book is dedicated to veganism, but has chapters on other items such as dairy and sugar, etc. The Chapter dedicated to how bad sugar is for you, also addresses the dangers of artificial sweetners such as aspartame, sweet n low, nutra sweet, etc. and yes even splenda. The exact quote from the book is this:

"The FDA calls splenda 98% pure. The other 2% contains small amounts of heavy metals, methanol and arsenic" ..."Sucralose has been found to cause diarrhea; organ, genetic, immune system, and reproductive damage; swelling of the liver and kidneys; and a decrease in fetal body weight. What a splendid product! According to Dr. Joseph Mercola in Consumer Research magazine's article "The potential Dangers of Sucralose," "There is no clear cut evidence that sugar substitutes are useful in weight reduction. On the contrary there is some evidence that these substances may stimulate appetite."

It goes on and on, too much to type here, but that is the meat of the section on splenda.

The book praises Stevia, as follows:

"Stevia another winner is derived from a plant found in Paraguay. The Japanese have been using this wonder sweetener for decades, South Americans for centuries. In fact, it is used by hundreds of millions of people around the world to balance blood sugar levels, reduce cravings for sweets, an aid in digestion. Additionally it is known for its antimicrobial properties (inhibits the growth of bacteria). Unfortunately it is the most unrecognized sweetner in the United States. This natural, herbal sweetner contains no calories, has no glycemic index (meaning it won't alter blood sugar), and is even safe for diabetics."

I wasn't trying to get everyone up in arms about it, just sharing something I read, you can decide for yourself to believe it or not.

I agree you can not believe everything you read, but am sure that just reading that is enough to put me off it long enough to find out the truth through more research, for me anyway.

Just an FYI...I am doing more research on this, so anything I find that seems to be credible I will post links to.

so far I have read some saying this is all Bull, and some saying its true. Its up in the air so far, but apparently there is a big debate about it because splenda is in fact a chemically altered product, not 1005 pure from nature/sugar, with no human studies or long term human studies to show the effects that years of consumption may have, the same as aspartame and its health disaster.

Here is an article I read that seems to back up what this book I read says....

Splenda, Is It Safe or Not? Interview with Dr. Janet Starr Hull

**if by any chance anyone out there doesn't care to have me post this stuff just say so and I wont. I have been living off the stuff for years so I understand....

Of course, whether or not you use Splenda is totally up to you ... and the reasons you do or don't use it are also up to you.

Just look behind the websites you're reading and quoting from ... what's "opinion" and what's "science".

As the old saying goes, "follow the money".

Quite a few anti-Splenda sites are funded by the sugar industry.
