  • A Calorie is a Calorie

Or is it? I found an interesting article, published in the Nutrition Journal in 2004. So some of you may have already seen this. It's very scientific, but if you can get through it it's worth the read. It explains why a calorie is NOT just a calorie and why the Atkins way of eating does indeed create a metabolic advantage.

I have to believe in what I'm doing. It has to make logical sense to me, so I've been doing a lot of research.

Maybe newer people to the forum haven't read this yet. Interesting stuff.

Just yesterday on TV there was someone promoting the Mayo Clinic diet and he stated that one needed to reduce calories and cited an example that if you kept within your calorie allotment you could just eat jelly beans and lose weight. He then added that of course, just jelly beans would not give you proper nutrition. Too late...many people will come away from that presentation thinking it's OK to eat junk as long as you watch your total calories.

Thanks for reposting this article...a calorie is not just a calorie.

Yes, many 'diets' tell you it's ok to eat this or that ...

When I was 'almost' 16 my mom bought me Stop The Insanity by Susan Powter.... Susan preached eat anything and as much as you want as long as it was 30% fat or below..
She'd talk about eating tons of things - a lot of it sugar filled junk. I mean they were 'all natural' junk foods but junk.

And I couldn't figure out why I continued to get fatter and fatter! lol

I didn't hear so much of the whole grains and beans she talked about but instead the plate stacked high with pancakes and maple syrup! The fat free cookies and that's where my love of 'fat free' candy began.. Runts, Skittles, Jolly Ranchers... etc..
      SIGH!

      Well now I know better.

My point is - I agree, people take what they want to hear and run with it. LOL
