  • alcohol allowed?

    Hello all,
I have finished my induction and am well into a workout routine of working out at least 5-6 days per week. every other day consists of weight training with the cardio on top of that. I am wondering if it is ok to have any sort of alcohol while on atkins? I am going out with my girlfriends tonight and would like to have a couple of drinks. Are rum and diet coke diet coke drinks permitted? I was told by a friend who had done low carb before that there are no carbs in the rum? Can anyone provide feedback? I am certainly not going to blow my diet and routine for a drink or two if it is going to slow down my wieght loss or set me back in any way. Thanks everyone!!
Hope you are all enjoying your weekend!

It is when you get to the appropriate rung of OWL.

    It's the 5th rung.

At this stage it would most likely slow your weight loss. Have sparkling water instead

If I drink, I will not lose weight - it doesn't matter if i work out 7 days a week and eat induction levels...I cannot drink on the WOE.

Right now - i am ok with this!

Thank you for the replies. I only had a couple of drinks, and only mixed with diet pepsi. I actually took measurements and I had still gone down inches this week...I dont drink very often, so hopefully it wont affect me. I'll be sure to get my cardio in today. Hope you all enjoy your Sunday =)

You can drink spirits when you're in the appropriate rung. Just keep in mind though, that when you consume alcholol, you temporarily stop burning fat. The alcohol gets burned first, then your body goes back to burning fat.

So why did you ask for advice if you already had your mind made up to do what you wanted to do.

                    Re: alcohol allowed?

I know we're not supposed to drink until we're at the appropriate rung and all of that but to be honest I never really gave up drinking.
I'm not saying it's ok or the right thing to do but it never really effected my weight loss.
To each his own... We have to make this WOE a part of our life, we have to make it work. If having a few drinks now and then socially works for you, do it. It won't be the end of the world.

If you're going to do it, be smart about it.
I usually opt for diet and captain, wine and occasionally Mich Ultra - but the beer totally stalls me and makes me bloat, so I rarely have it.
Stay mindful of you eating and just because you're have a few low-carb drinks doesn't mean it should be a free for all. There's no reason to go off plan when drinking.

Anyway, your body won't burn fat while it has alchohol to burn... So keep it all in moderation and you'll be ok..

                    Good luck!

It did affect you ... your body burned alcohol for fuel instead of fat. That will be the case until the alcohol is metabolized by your body.

Not everything relates to the scale!

                        Re: alcohol allowed?

I have always drank wine or spirits on Atkins and found that it does nothing to my weight loss. Beer is packed full of carbs so I avoid that. The main problem with alcohol is that you want a pizza when you're drunk, but if you can avoid this then you might be ok. Everyone is different, so try it and see. Alcohol helps lower blood sugar levels, and stops this way of eating turning into something that you can't sustain. I'm all for a drink and I've lost plenty of weight.

Alcohol is not permitted on Induction.

If you choose to ignore that advice, that's up to you ...

And ... how do you know it "does nothing" to your weight loss if you've never done Atkins without drinking?

Alcohol induced hypoglycemia is not something a low carber would want to toy with, since it occurs when your glycogen stores have been depleted and low carbers have little glycogen.

I've not updated my stats, but you can look at my photos (which are from last year now and don't show results of my weight training) to see that I've lost over 40lb on Atkins and have gone from obesity to running the London Marathon.

Further to this, I've not had any "attempt" I simply have stuck to low-carb from day one, and have drank alcohol and had reasonable amount of days off the diet when I've chosen to.

I don't really like this 'Atkins Mafia' approach to the diet when any reasonable suggestion that differs from Dr Atkins' Bible is shot down with zeal. It is only by fiddling about with the diet and changing it to suit your taste and lifestyle that it changes properly from a 'diet' to a lifestyle such as vegetarian or vegan.

It's best to find your own happy medium, with or without alcohol.
