  • Very Confused

    On Saturday I bought the Atkins brand chocolate peanut butter bars. The front of the package said they have 2 net grams of carbs. Normally I ALWAYS turn the package over and read everything, but I didn't because it was Atkins brand. I ate one, VERY SATISFYING. Then I became curious about what was in it and read the nutritional content. CARBS: 22g; DIETARY FIBER: 12g
    I have been calculating my carbs wrong all along?

    I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you should be keeping away from the bars They may say Atkins, but they sure don't fit in with induction, and it is best to eat "real" food, even though it is more trouble and sometimes much less convenient. The long term results are worth it...

      The Atkins brand bars are sold by a commercial corporation. Their goal is to make money. They changed the diet to allow their products in all phases, this is not the diet that Dr. Atkins developed. If you look at the list of ingredients, you will see that some of them are not on the list of foods acceptable for induction.

      The bars are known to stall some people - we recommend avoiding them, or using them only in case of emergency.

        Yeah...I am very angry right now. I had a severe case of bronchitis and a lung infection right after Christmas and I put on prednisone for the first time ever. That stuff made me an animal. I had zero control over what I was eating and all i wanted was sugar and cookies. I finally finished the script and got back in control and was 2 weeks back into ketosis and that one bar knocked me out...back to induction-AGAIN.

        I KNEW they were too good to be true.

          You don't have to do induction again - you'll get back into ketosis if you just continue from where you were. If you do choose to do induction, a couple days should do it - no need to do 2 more weeks

            did the front say 2 net or 2 net effective grams of carbs? net effective carbs removes things like glycerine, sugar alcohols fiber and hydrogenated starches. all except fiber were illegal to be listed as fiber in the nutrtional data label so they invented a new label.

            The issue is the stuff shouldn't impact your blood sugar within the normal testing time limit. BUT most low carbers who use blood sugar monitors notice a spike later which means the stuffs impact is delayed. Other lack digestive enzymes or healthy gut flora and get massive instetinal issues from eating them. either wway they are not something that should be a part of your atkins if you want ot get to goal weight counting carbs eating atkins and doing that mandatory exercise part of your atkins.

              just keep eating induction until you are back in ketosis should take 1-2 days and then you can go right back to where you were on your Atkins.

                It does say net effective carbs. I've will have been on Atkins for 6 months this coming Sunday and I still don't know have of what I should! Thanks!

                And thanks to everybody else also...I was so mad at the thought of a 2 week induction all over again!

                  just remember 14 induction is not a punishment for being out of ketosis either accidently or from a cheat. As Dr Atkins says in DANDR just do a fwe days to get back to ketosis and then move right back where you were before the issue.

                      The things on those bars that has carbs according to the labelling rules but not according to the Atkins company is glycerine. So the 10 carbs "missing" that is what it is. So with peanuts you should be on OWL 3 to eat. They are not absolute evil. OK for emergencies I think if you can deal with them.

                        Yeah those bars are a bummer. And there are more lessons to come as you work up the rungs in Ongoing Weight Loss. You may discover food allergies and all kinds of stuff as you go along, but it all adds up to experience and knowledge toward building a way of eating that will work for a healthy life!
