    Re: Bad news today

If you feel that your doctor might not realise what eating Atkins entails it might be worth taking in a list of your daily menus, showing that you are not on a bacon and cheese diet
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

      Re: Bad news today

Well, well, well! I went to the doctor yesterday and we had a long discussion about the ADA's decision to recommend a low-carb diet to help control levels. He told me the A1C test they run is normally 4-6%. When they medicate diabetic patients, they like to keep the A1C number under 7% (that is with medication). Mine was 6.8% without medication so I was borderline. He did prescribe me Metformin to bring it down a little, but we started talking about diet. I asked him that, if I were to adopt Atkins as a WOL knowing that I am hurting myself with yo-yo diets and need a permanent lifestyle change, if he would be comfortable with me doing Atkins, his response was, "absolutely, 100% yes!"

I am stoked! I was planning on adopting this WOL regardless because I know what the studies say, but more importantly, I know how I FEEL right now after having been on it 2 weeks - more energy, more clarity, no hunger. Also, he said that the Metformin will actually help speed along my weight loss, and since I have more than 200 pounds to go (down 18 in 17 days so far!), he is not concerned right now with the rate of loss - that it is better to get the weight off right now. But to get the endorsement like that from my doctor who is one of my best friends just gave me such a shot of confidence that this IS best for me and this CAN be done! I can't describe how elated I am about it!

Anyway, I just had to share this good news and also to encourage others of you that may be concerned about your doctor's reaction. This WOL makes sense when you read and know the facts, and now the medical community is starting to get on board more and more. Did I mention that I was stoked?!?

Oh, Keith! I am so happy for you!! So much of the medical establishment is in the dark about how to do Atkins correctly, and have a closed mind. My doctor, too, is 100% pro-Atkins and I can tell you that it does makes life so much easier when you are both on the same page. It really does make a world of difference to have the support.

Keep up the great work, Keith! You are a success story in the making.

            Re: Bad news today

That is fantastic news that you have the support of your Dr/friend. The more people behind you, the more likely you are to succeed. I've heard good reviews on the med you are on and that it really does speed things along so I hope you see amazing results and get your levels under control quickly.

I go back to for my biannual appt in 3 months. Last time I was in she wanted to increase my bp meds because my readings were getting a little high. I wouldn't let her and told her I wanted to see what I can do on my own first. Hopefully when I go back in they will reduce or eliminate them.

            Best of luck!

Remember you can always get a second opinion from another physician. i think if you stick with the way of life you will combat or maybe even reverse the diagnosis of diabetes.

I am sorry to hear about it, I understand how it affects people and all 4 of my grandparents suffered from it from poor eating habits.

best of luck and let us know what your doctor advises.

WooHoo Keith !! Thanks for giving us an update I could tell you were a little anxious to talk to your Doc/friend about Atkins. To have him give you 100% endorsement is wonderful. It sounds like you have your mind firmly wrapped around this which if fantastic too! I personally found the book to be a fascinating read, and have 2 copies, one by my bed and one in the bathroom. I can't tell you how many times I've gone back and re-read a section to find something I missed the first two times. I look forward to further updates from your successes.

                      Re: Bad news today

Keith - being on the line of great news....and the fact your doctor (endocrinologist or internist) believes in the Atkins plan is another bonus for you. My A1C has gone from 10.3 when I was first diagnosed and started Atkins my number was 10.3 -- with Atkins my last A1C (in December) was 5.3 so I'm considered diet controlled but still take metformin twice a day because of other health factors it's known to help. You've been diagnosed early enough to reverse it with very few changes in what you've already been doing with Atkins.

                      Good luck!!

                        Re: Bad news today

Thanks so much for the encouragement!

One thing I need to clarify is that the 6.8% A1C number came BEFORE I started Atkins. I actually started Atkins two days before the test results came in the mail. In three months, we run the tests again and I can't wait to see the result!

                          Re: Bad news today

That's great news! I've found similar support from doctors. Once they see the weight I'm losing, know that I'm eating well and lots of veggies, exercising and drinking lots of water, they tell me to "keep doing what I'm doing". And after a while, I got their numbers (cholesterol, BP, insulin, glucose) to back it up too.

It always helps to get their support. I wish more doctors would get on board, however.

I have to have labs run at least twice a year. So far they are ok but my good cholesterol was 1pt below what they like. Will be interesting to see if goes up on my next check up in 2 months.
