  • Cheese question

I know induction says to stay within 4 ounces a day of cheese. But most of my cheese is 0 grams of carbs per serving and I eat a lot of some days.

So what is the scientific/metabolic reason to stay within 4 grams if some cheese have 0 carbs (not net)? What would happen if I ate 10 ounces of 0 carb cheese, just for example?

That's what the label says, but the label is lying.

    All cheese has carbs.

And as you know from your reading of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, using the carb count of 1 net carb per ounce is fine.

If you want an accurate carb count, you can look it up on the USDA database:

    >>What would happen if I ate 10 ounces of 0 carb cheese, just for example?>>

    Constipation?

Eating 1/2 your daily net carbs in cheese?

    Not following the rules?

cheese has carbs as in lactose sugars the labels are crap they trick you on other foods too like whipping cream is really bad the carbs can add up fast on that if you think its 0 carbs

Not to mention how quickly you can add up calories (and carbs!!) by over eating your cheese...
        Trust me! lol

Why use up so much calories/carbs on one food?

          Re: Cheese question

actually the reason is quite simple.

Dr Atkins when he designed his plan decided aged cheese regardless of what kind it was had one gram of carbs per ounce which he says in DANDR several times

so in picking 4 ounces as the serving size he

1)limits the caloric exposure from cheese
          2) he places measureble limits on serving sizes which is something many overweight folk were not practicing and need to learn
3)he helps us get that required vits and minerals from our veggies by forcing us to pick some of the higher carb veggies and not 3 cups of lettuce if we want to eat our full 4 ounces of cheese.

          Sneaky guy wasn't he!

Easy rule of thumb, as per pg. 125 of the text: 1 ounce = 1 carb.

Also, just to warn you, cheese can cause stalls. It did for me anyway. I could eat it but only maybe an ounce at a time and not every day.

All cheese has carbs as does cream even though the label may read zero. To my knowledge a product can have as many as 5 carbs per serving and legally carry a zero carb claim on the label. To stay safe I count at least one carb per ounce of hard, full fat cheese regardless of the label. I also weigh my cheese on a kitchen scale as my eyes can deceive me.

Find out what works for you, though. I know some who do low-carb like to make taco shells out of fried cheese. For me that's way too much cheese in one day. I'll gain water weight from the sodium. I'll get stopped up from the cheese itself. And it's just not enough nutrients per carb in my estimation. I try to make every carb count so to speak.

Now that I'm past the dairy rung I try to really watch the cheese and cream so I can enjoy a yogurt and fruit smoothie instead. Again, more nutrients per carb, fewer digestive problems, improved overall health.
