Here is one of my favorite ways to eat it:

I peel it, then slice it first into large thin flat pieces, and then lay the slices on a paper towel for a minute or two to remove the excess moisture so they will fry up ok. Then I slice them into thin strips and fry them in some butter and peanut oil, and when they are almost "burned", I turn off the heat, blot some of the oil off, and then sprinkle some cinnamon on them and give them a toss. Oh so Yummy!
I soak up the extra moisture otherwise it seems they never get fried up enough.
Actually, you are the one who got me thinking about it... I had read your great recipe in Adrel Journal... I said wow... that sounds so yummy right about now... so now I'm on a mission, but I think with the other names, I will have to find it either at the Chineese markets or the regular grocery store... we will see tomorrow..

It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

HOWEVER! Elizellen is right... they are not the same kind of turnip that is on the Induction List. They are a Rung 8 Starchy Veggie.

Amanda ~ you have Whole Foods in NYC, right? I've gotten jicama from there, too, when Walmart hasn't had them (just costs a whole lot more).

              Re: Jicama

Jicamas can be hard to find since they are quite perishable. I had one Wal Mart produce manager on the north end of town tell me they don't carry them because they go bad too quickle, yet the Wal Mart on the south end of town has them. You will probably have the best luck in stores where a lot of Mexicans shop.

                Re: Jicama

Definitely agree with the above comment. In SoCal, where I'm from, the jicama were abundant and plentiful, and the best ones were always from a Mexican market not too far from where I lived. Here in Northern Colorado, they're sometimes hit or miss...WalMart usually has them, but King Soopers/Safeway usually only have a few and they're often rather sad looking! Whole Foods is half an hour away from me so I don't often shop there, and we don't have Trader Joe's...but if you have either of those nearby, or a Mexican market, DEFINITELY look those places

nxrcks - I am in CT also, and can find jicama routinely in Stop & Shop. As for other CT/New England grocery chains, Big Y usually has a good produce selection, I'd be surprised if they didn't carry it.

                    Re: Jicama

I used to serve jicama to my Spanish classes to introduce them to foreign vegetables. We'd slice it into sticks, sprinkle with lime and chili powder. The kids loved it especially dipped in ranch... which is not exactly Mexican but ah well LOL I love the stuff.

                      Re: Jicama

I finally picked one up. I grabbed the smallest one I could find, it was very sweet (from what I read the larger they are they less sweet they are). As someone who hates veggies I must say this is fantastic. It tasted very much like an apple with a texture half way between an apple and raw potato. I haven't tried it cooked yet. I just sampled a bit and added a little bit of splenda and cinnamon, very nice little snack.

I have checked 2 different grocery stores in the area (Michigan) and couldn't find it. I had to go to a fruit and vegetable market.

I had to go to a veggie market too. I have been told they are out of season right now so it is harder to get them from wherever they ARE in season!

I finally found one but it didn't look like the pics. It was huge, 2.5lbs and looked more like a potato skin on the outside. Anyways sliced some and fried it then sprinkled it with cinammon. It was ok but I don't think I'll make it again. 1 out of 4 kids liked it, not enough to want it again either.

Well at least I tried a new veggie.

Yes, they do sort of look like they have a potato skin. I do not think kids would care for it fried, but did you try eating it uncooked?
It has been compared to apple, pear type of flavor and touch. My Latin friends use lime and salt on sliced Jicama (uncooked).

Not sure what's up with that... they have been so good lately. Over the winter, the stores didn't stock them. When they came back about 3 weeks ago, they were fantastic. Then the last couple have been yucky. Hopefully the next batch will be good.

I agree, they are not too good, if I can even find them. My sources at the stores are telling me they are out of season. So they are harder to get from the places that can still grow them.
Maybe they are not tasty because they are like the "hot house tomato".
