  • HELP! - I'm about to quit!

I am finding myself ready to give-up after 4 weeks. This is my 2nd time on Atkins (1st time was 7 yrs. ago). I went through induction with no problem - I even turned those Ketostix purple. I then switched to OWL. I have been eating very clean & working-out regularly. My 1 indulgence has been 4C ice tea sweetened with Splenda, of which I drink a lot (accounting for 16 carbs per day).

Well after 4 weeks I am down 3lbs. and no inches on the waist. These aren't the results I was expecting. The first time I did Atkins I lost 16lbs. and most of it was off my waist. The only thing different this time is now I am on Benicar for blood pressure - could this be stopping my weight loss?

Anyway, I don't want to quit but the effort seems for little gain and I am frustrated.

    Words of help, please?

Oh no do not stop your meds - anything to do with prescribed meds should be dealt with your doctor. here we are all amateurs - it could be dangerous to take a strangers advice in such an important issue.

But to lose weight you have stop drinking ice tea with splenda and eat vegetables in stead.
I am sorry to say but 7 years is a long time. The body changes. Do a super CLEAN version of version. You have to.

You are much welcome to join the olympic challenge. All the participants try to give up an item of food or drink that they fear may be causing them an issue for the duration of the olympic games.

      Hi Chandler

Are you saying 16 of your daily carbs were used on Iced tea and Splenda? What level of OWL are you on? Your info says 14 day Induction. On Induction your are limited to no more than 20 carbs, with more than 1/2 of those carbs coming from veggies.

And you are limited to a total of 3 servings/packets of Splenda per day.

And 7 years ago is a long time ago to compare results. WE don't want you to quit either, but It seems you are not following the plan properly. What source are you using for the guidlines to the ATKINS plan?

      Are you eating any veggies?

How many net carbs are you eating?

How much water are you drinking?

I don't know anything about Benicar. Perhaps your doctor or pharmacist can answer that question for you.

I am not going off my meds - I just through that out there in case anyone has heard of meds interfering with weight loss.

I know the tea is an issue but I workout so much/hard that I though I could get away with it. I don't drink much plain water as I do drink a lot of tea.

Well I guess I should give up the tea and got super clean for another try at induction.

        Any other thoughts?

          Hi Chandler,

We can't really comment much more if you don't answer some of the questions. We need to know a little about you...all we know is about your your liking of ice tea/Splenda.

That's the first thing that has to disappear from your plan.

            >> I have been eating very clean>>

Why not post an exact menu with net carb counts?

                  Chandler,
I feel your pain! I am also on blood pressure meds. To answer your question, yes they definitely slow down weight loss. Dr. Atkins writes about b/p meds. in the book. Here is how I try to look at it...no matter what "diet" you choose to do, the meds are going to slow down your loss. At least with this WOE, it is proven to work. You know that from the past. Keep up with it, and eventually you will be off of your b/p meds. In the meantime, Dr. Atkins lists some supplements to help if you are slowly loosing. I just purchased two of them. Check it out in the book. If you don't have the book, let me know and I will tell you what they are and the doseage. (I don't have the book in front of me right now) I started Atkins Dec. 26, 2009. I have lost 15 pounds now. That may be slower than some, however; I went one month and only lost 5 pounds. After two or three weeks of nothing, suddenly the scale goes down! Slow and steady wins the race!! I was frustrated just like you about a month ago. Try and keep it up though!!! Definitely cut out the Splenda. I found when I quit drinking diet coke/pepsie, I lost more. Good luck!

                      Hi,
                      just a suggestion re. tea.
You can make your own iced tea completely unsweetened. Of course it will be an adjustment to get used to it without sweetener, but you will get used to it. Or you can put one sweetener in the whole batch with a little lemon. Anyways, this woe/wol does take some tweeking and experimentation. I would talk to your doctor about the medication issue and maybe increase your exersize to help increase your metebolism.
                      Hang in there...

Re: HELP! - I'm about to quit!

I agree with the others...16g of carbs from tea? That is why to much. I will say that I do have my daily cup of tea but I only add 1 tbsp (1 serving) of sweetener to my cup, cold or warm (I find warm better actually). With the sweetener I use it is like 1.4g of carbs.

I would suggest cutting out the tea (or maybe start making your own) for a week and see how it goes.

You really should try to get most of your NET carbs from veggies. It's amazing what your body will do when you have the right fuel.

If you don't like plain water try making iced water with a little bit of lemon (or lime) juice. The cold gives it a sweet taste and the lemon juice will jazz it up. It's better to work out with then tea. It will keep you going for much longer. (Also look for the Water Challenges which come around every month, you will be rewarded for drinking it.)

I just started back at induction (shaking things up a bit) and am doing it as clean as possible. I know I shouldn't weigh myself everyday but I was curious and after one day I went from 164.8 to 162.2, it is water weight I know but it is nice to see.

Keep it up. If there is one thing I have learned since last April (when I started this WOE) is it gets easier with time. I even got my boyfriend cooking atkins friendly meals with out him knowing

                        Good luck!

If 16 carbs of your daily intake is from tea I'm afraid I'd have to say it's the tea... unless I didn't read your post correctly.

I just love coffee and used to drink it by the gallon just about. Today I just have a cup or two in a typical day mainly because I drink so much water.

Are you drinking all your water? Remember for each cup of tea to drink an extra cup of water on top of what you're already drinking. I'd start there anyhow, see if it helps.

One of my big crutches has been Splenda and even too much tea. (How many carbs really are in tea?). I've really cut down on both in the last several months down to maybe 2-3 packets of Splenda a day, sometimes 1 or none. I do have tea still but only on occasion and I supplement it with a little lemon instead and a much smaller amount of Splenda.

So the questions are, are you consuming this to soothe a sweet craving? Or for caffeine? Are you drinking enough water in addition to the tea?

I'd cut both out for a week and see what happens. See the Olympic challenge starting tonight for extra motivation! I'm cutting out half-n-half (allowable on OWL but I think it may be slowing my weight loss).
