  • Atkins while Travelling

    Hello,

I am new to Atkins - in fact I started today. Maybe it is bad timing, because I will be going on a long distance journey (8 hour flight). My problem is... what to eat on the plane? Is there anything I can prepare and take on the plane ... or is that not allowed?

I would really appreciate if anyone could help me there. I have no idea what to take.

    Thanks in advance!

    I'd call and ask.

What I've done in the past when I had long flights was to have an empty Tupperware container in my hand luggage. After the security point, in larger airports you can usually find restaurants that sell salads and burgers. Get a burger with no ketchup and no sauces (I would avoid even mayo since you never know what's in it)... toss the bun. Get a salad with regular ranch or, safer, just oil and maybe vinegar (but not balsamic). Place the burger and the salad in the plastic container... and you've got your meal.

Thank you!! That's a really good idea!

Do you know any snacks I can eat in general... I would like to buy some Atkins bars, however I cannot get them where I live. I live in the UK, do you know of any low carb bars that are suitable?

      Thanks!!!

I wouldn't use Atkins bars or any other kind of bars "in general". When I need a snack, I prefer to eat real food. Any food from the Acceptable Foods List can be a snack.

Some quick snacks are leftovers, celery with cream cheese, cheese crackers, half an avocado, boiled eggs, deviled eggs, pepper strips or cucumber sticks with some dip...

You can find a lot of recipes on Linda's page:

I have one more question. I found an Atkins muffins recipe, and they ask for almond flour or coconut flower. Is almond flour simply ground almonds? If not, do you have any idea where to buy it in the UK?

          Thanks!

Yep. You can read more here:

Almond Flour or Meal - How to Use it and Where to Get Almond Meal

However, almonds are not an Induction food. They come in the nuts rung of OWL.

              Re: Atkins while Travelling

You can grind almonds to make your own 'almond flour' or buy ground almonds once you are at the OWL rung 3.
You could make some revolution rolls - if you cook them in the microwave (1/3rd of the recipe at a time) they turn out more 'bready' in consistency.
You could also make the 'muffin in a minute' recipe - I omit the sweetener and add grated cheese to the recipe to make a sort of cheese scone.

Either of these can be buttered and eaten on their own or with some cheese to make a substantial snack or meal.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

hmm, the muffin in a minute sounds interesting. It uses flaxmeal. I think that's ground linseeds, isn't it? The recipes I found are all microwave recipes. Unfortunately I don't have a microwave. Do you know a recipe that I can do in the oven?

                Thanks!

I make MIMs in the oven, not in the microwave.

                    Re: Atkins while Travelling

ok, now i have made a super nice kind of cake. yum! i will list the ingredients here, as I am not 100% sure if it's Atkins-legal.

OK, this is what I used:

2 cups flaxmeal (I basically did this myself by grinding linseed) (carbs: 0g)
1/2 cup desicated coconut (dried coconut) (6.2g)
1 sachet of creamed coconut (carbs:3.4g)
1/2 cup olive oil (carbs: 0g)
                    4 eggs (carbs: 2.6)

                    Total carbs: 11.2g

                    Is this calculation correct?

I am quite amazed, because I got a huge bowl full of "dough".

Please let me know what you think.
                    Thanks!!

The carbs are low, but not exactly zero. You can check the USDA database for accurate carb counts:

USDA, of course, follows the American labeling system, so you will need to deduct dietary fiber from carbohydrates to find net carbs.

1/2 cup desicated coconut (dried coconut) (6.2g)
1 sachet of creamed coconut (carbs:3.4g)
Coconut is not acceptable on Induction. Are you reading the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution?

What is the source you used for your carb counts?

I am using the internet as a resource. I have a fairly healthy weight, my BMI is 24. I read somewhere that if you are not extremely overweight, then you don't have to do the strict induction. Do you think the coconut will destroy my benefits?

                        Thanks,
                        Lilly.

edit: The source for carbs are from the packaging of the products I used.

I'm sure you didn't read this in the book. If you do Induction, then you need to do Induction (that is, follow all the rules), regardless of how many pounds you have to lose.

If you choose to start in OWL, then I'd start at OWL Rung 1 (more vegetables), not at OWL Rung 3.

The source for carbs are from the packaging of the products I used.
Okay, so those are already net carbs, since you are in the UK.

Were the carbs for coconut given per cup or grams? Did you weigh the amount you used?

Whether or not you choose to have coconut is really your decision. I, or anyone else, cannot predict how coconut will affect you. All we can do is give you advice about the correct way to follow Atkins.

By the way, any idea how many servings that cake you made will yield?

                              Re: Atkins while Travelling

The carbs were given in grams and I worked it out based on how much I used. I was able to make around 15 small "cakes" or "muffins" out of it. I ate two of them and am completely full. I am planning to take a few on the plane on Saturday - it seems like a good solution for me. After the plane journey I will stick to the induction programme again.

                              Thanks for all your advice!
