    Re: Thyroid cancer.... anybody else¿¿

    Hi peytonn,

I had thyroid cancer 6 years ago and have been on Thyroxine since. You really need to speak to someone re your peeling skin as this is certainly NOT a side effect of the Radio active iodine treatment!

As far as keto sticks turning pink/purple I have no idea if thyroid treatment effects them. What I personally know is that being on Thyroxine & not having a Thyroid gland has certainly not stopped me from losing weight with Atkins. I lost 14Llbs on Induction and I am now on Owl rung 1.

So if I were you I would throw the sticks away, stick to induction & let the results speak for themselves

yes.. the ketostix.. they used to turn pink just in a couple of days.. but this time not.. although I am losing...

the skin thing.. can be a side effect of being completely without a thyroid or any hormone replacement for over 9 weeks... from what I've read... it's getting better.. I've scrubbed and scrubbed... it doesn't hurt.. it's just dry dead skin.. and it's coming off... (my arms are the worst place now.. looks nasty)..

I've pretty much stopped searching and reading online things.. because it's so different for everybody I guess... and I don't see the new endo until June.. so I'm just kinda stuck...

(although like I said.. my GP did bloodwork and is giving me the synthroid until then)

where did you read that? I have been without a thyroid for 6 years and the day you had your Radioactive iodine they should have prescribed you a dose of thyroxine at a suppressant level as a Thyroid Cancer patient the treatment is different. So if you are reading about HypOthyroidism or hypErthyroidism SOME of the iformation just wont be relevant to you. Though HypO would be MORE relevant. Your consultant should be the one prescribing for you So to be without any Thyroxine replacement for 9 weeks seems strange to me.

Anyway, good luck with whatever is going on in your life right now I hope you get whatever it is you are seeking here from other members!

            Re: Thyroid cancer.... anybody else¿¿

all I know is that after they took out my thyroid.. I had NO medicine until after the I-131 ablation.......

so.. I was definately hypO... and hypo can cause fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, all kinds of stuff...

the day I swallowed the I-131 (the big dose.. not the small one for the body scans).. they gave me nothing else.. I was in the hospital sick as crap for the next 3 days..

when I came home.. on the 5th of feb.. my endo appt. wasn't until march 3.. but I thought I'd go ahead and call and see if he would get me started on synthroid.. since i was feeling kinda bad... I learned he had left town.. disappeared.. POOF!

so.. I'm kinda 'in between' doctors again.. waiting for another Endo to see me in June.. until then.. my GP is doing bloodwork and prescribed synthroid..

              Re: Thyroid cancer.... anybody else¿¿

I don't have a 'consultant'... I found the lump in September... went to my GP .. she sent me for scans.. went back to GP... she sent me to endo... saw him twice.. he sent me to surgeon... saw him a bunch of times.. 2 different surgeries...... went to hospital 3 times for bloodwork.. took small dose of I-131 on Monday.... had body scans that week on Wednesday and Thursday... met with a different doctor who read the scans.. and told me there was no evidence cancer had spread...

reported to hospital on the following tuesday for I-131 ablation... 3 days in hospital... (oncology isolation).... came home... called endo... he'd skipped town... called surgeon... he called in synthroid... went to gp.. she did more bloodwork..

              and that's where I am..

**correction... it was 9 weeks and 2 days since the first half of my thyroid was removed.. with the tumor.. the 2nd surgery.. to remove the WHOLE thing.. was dec. 11.. it was 8 weeks and 2 days totally without a thyroid.. or any thyroid medicine.. there was some reason why they didn't want to begin the hormone replacement until after the ablation... but that 'mental dullness' symptom kicked in.. so I dont' remember exactly why it was

but yeah.. dry skin.. fatigue, weight gain... all that stuff is something they warned me would happen during the time from the surgery until I was ready for the scans and ablation...

I guess it's different with each person...

this has been a long long process...

Read about thyroid cancer symptoms, treatment (surgery and radioactive iodine), types, prognosis, staging, and causes. Learn about the different types of thyroid cancer (papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic) and their survival rates.

that explains why he left me without hormone replacement for 8 weeks I guess.. before the scans and ablation

                  Re: Thyroid cancer.... anybody else¿¿

had to go back for followup at regular doc yesterday... and it's not good right now..

                  my cholesterol is 316 total

                  ldl 209
                  hdl 39
                  trigs 340

it's so off the grid she didn't even get mad.. or put me on meds yet... waiting for the thyroid medicine to 'get leveled out' or something...

i only began synthroid on feb. 8... after 9 weeks without a thyroid gland.. or thryoid replacement hormone.. so she said THAT could whack out the numbers...

so I go for MORE bloodwork in April..

the only bright spot.. my weight was 194.8 on Feb. 15.. and 187.4 on Feb. 25.... so at least I'm losing a little...

thanks for all the input.. this thing is new to me...... and hope it stays that way... statistics say it comes back in about 1/3 of the patients..... hope i'm not in that 1/3.

when you go for those new numbers ask for a complete lipid panel cause you could be doing very well with your LDL if you have the big fluffy particles low carbers make.

your triglycerides should come down too as Atkinseers are using those for making energy molecules.

thanks.. I'll remember to ask that...

my last cholesterol total was 203.. not great.. but not 316.. and atkins had nothing to do with the increase (I didn't start back on this plan until AFTER my hideous weigh in at the doc on feb. 15... )

but I'm knowing it WILL be better next time..

thanks.. I'll have to read it carefully...

but.. it's too late now.. I already had the cancer.. lol..

                          as for the flouride.. hmmmm..

I grew up in the country.. we had well water.. but I do remember taking polyvisol vitamins.. and I distinctly remember giving my younger sister that vitamin with flouride added.. (since we didn't have flouridated water.. that's what the pediatrician recommended)..

my younger sisters have great teeth.. and so far.. no thyroid cancer... but my teeth are soft.. and worn in front..

the doctors never asked me about flouride.. they did mention that dental x-rays.. could have been a factor.. but i never had many of those either that i remember.. when a tooth had a bad spot.. they just drilled and filled..

but I appreciate the article.. I'll read it carefully a bit later.. still good to know these things.. even if it's too late for me
