  • Questions while i'm waiting my book!!! :) first time on atkins!

Hello! I don't want to be boring, but I can't find some answers about this diet. I'm still waiting THE BOOK so I don't have many informations.

It's my firts day on Atkins, induction phase. I found some articals, and some lovely people gave me few link... so I'm about to know what should or shouldn't I eat.

But, I'm having some problems, or better questions. I saw that I(or we) can not eat fruits. I understand it's because of carbohydrates and sugar... but I'm wondering is this good for my health?

PLEASE DON'T BE MAD, AND SCREAM AT ME, I HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK.

And what if I choose Atkins as a way of living? Does that mean that I would never, ever eat fruit again?

Could someone please explain me this few things.

    Thank you,
    appreciate it

    Welcome to ADBB!

You can't have fruit in the first two week.

Low carb fruits, such as berries and some melons are added back in on OWL, Rung 4.

So it's simply not true that you won't ever eat fruit again.

Fruits are over rated. I think people eat them because they are sweet. Just sugar addiction - not really for health. Most of the vitamins and stuff can be just as easily had from vegetables. (especially when eaten raw - but people are lazy about vegetables - because they need sugar for everything. Once you get rid of sugar addiction it will be easier to enjoy vegetables.
There are for instance more vitamin C in red pepper than there in orange.

But yes I eat some fruits now in maintenance. Berries, grapefruit, apples usually sometimes other things like a few grapes or a piece of pear.

          Here is an example
I am eating jicama right now 100grams has 20mg of vit C - if I ate the equivalent of apple it would have 4 mg.

I wouldn't agree with you. I know this diet helped you(and hope that would help me), but you can not say that fruits aren't very important and healthy food.

I am happy to hear that Atkins diet includes them.

            Thank you for your answer,
            and good luck

OK how about an other example
100 gram of pumpkin (a veggie I eat a lot of) has 3 times your daily need of vit A (it is loaded with magnesium, potassium and other essential vitamins. But an apple up against that an it falls flat on its face.

Just adding that I think this is something we may learn when low carbing our concept of what were good for us will change.
Anyways good luck on your journey. Hope you get your book soon

Ok, this is getting funny. Why are you doing this battle between fruits and veggies? I just asked are there some fruits in this diet? Not who is a winner. This is ridiculos.

I LOVE ATKINS DIET, and want to stick to it, without doing some harm to myself, thats why I opened this thread.

Thank you, can't wait to get my book

Even if you never ate another piece of fruit, you wouldn't "be doing harm to yourself".

I believe that was the point Liv was trying to make.

I have to have fruit... can't be a southern farm girl and NOT eat fruit.. there's nothing better than standing at the blueberry bush eating the ones the birds left for me.. and my peaches.. tiny little things.. sometimes have to throw away half because of a worm.. but I stand at the tree and eat them.....

it's a choice you get to make later on down the line...

and sugar or not.. I don't think i could live without being able to eat a wild strawberry.. a blueberry or peach.. from my tree.. or the perfect nectarine.. sometimes..

good thing they're not in season now anyway..

fruit is only available 2 months out of the year in nature naturally for a reason

i know its hard to accept but as long as you eat naturally to what you would find in nature you can be healthy

for example lets take eskimos who eat there native diet thats up to 80% fat in there diet with loads of saturated animal fats

they eat naturally and because of it they have 0% obesity, 0% heart disease, 0% type 2 diabetes

while 1 in 2 americans will have or die from a heart attack

eskimos bodyfat% is only 10%! thats very lean so really as long as you eat naturally to what God made in nature you will be healthy

most vegetables are low carb not many are starch fest's like potatos and corn

there is no such thing as LDL = BAD, your body needs LDL to live and your HDL recycles your LDL and don't get caught off gaurd with the almost useless total cholesterol test only a full pannel one shows whats really going on scroll down read whats at this link if your interested

also the fruit now a days hardly resembles the fruit people ate many years ago cause alot of the fruit now a days has been cultivated by man to be more sugary

if you hunt and gather in any place in the world out of the 3 macro nutrients you bring back carbohydrates will be the lowest

we are ment to be fat burning metabolisms a chicken egg has 61% fat, a human mothers breast milk has 50-57% calories from fat

later on in the diet rung7 you can eat fruit and still stay a fat burning metabolism its just when you eat refined grains or pasta or like a can of sugar filled pop them foods are posion to us

also these foods are posion too

Some folks, like myself, can't eat fruit because it has a sweet taste and that can trigger cravings. You can get all the vitamins you need from veggies. But if you can handle fruit go for it (in the appropriate rung, of course).

                          Hi again Alani,

AFter you finish your 2 weeks on Induction, you may begin to start adding food groups into your eating gradually. We call them "rungs" here. Like the steps of a ladder. You will read more about it in the book or here:

Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) - Atkins Diet

OWL stands for Ongoing Weight Loss. Berries are added in as step 4, and other fruits as step 7.

Regarding the fruit comments, no one was saying it is not good to eat fruit. Though many people here eat very little fruit if any, but that is their choice.

It is not against the rules....

My Mom keeps asking me why I am not eating fruit yet, that I need the vitamins from fruit.... and I explained that I will eventually, but I also had her pick 4 fruits that she likes, and then 4 veggies that she likes. I looked up the nutrition info for all.

The results were that the veggies had much more vitamins, etc, than the fruits she chose.

She said she never realized that the veggies could be better than the fruit.

And I also pointed out to her all the natural sugar in many fruits, and how it could cause an sugar attack if you have so much.

Keep reading all those links I sent you until the book comes.!

                          And keep asking questions!
