  • Workout in the morning?

Question for those that really know their stuff.....Maybe a kinesiologist (sp?) or other nutritionist?

For Non-Atkins peeople: They say that working out in the morning is much more productive than working out in the evening, because in the afternoon you have to get through stored glucose before you start tapping into fat stores. In the mornings, since your body as been fasting for 8 hours, you will not have to work through as much stored glucose so you will almost immediately start tapping into fat reserves. They say a 30 minute routine in the morning is equal to a 60 minute routine in the afternoon.

For Atkins people: Since we do not have to work through any glucose reserves, is it as beneficial to workout in the morning? For me, I can workout out longer in the afternoon than working out in the morning and I HATE getting up at 5:00 a.m.

      Re: Workout in the morning?

Great question. I was thinking the same thing and did some research to find out what is what. Here's the scoop I found: While you are on the right track as far the burning of the stored fat vs. burning through glucose, the main benefit of doing cardio in the morning is that it gets your metabolism going and you will benefit from it while working out and throughout the day. It is not bad to work out at night, the only thing with that is you will mainly benefit from it while you are working out but once you go to sleep, your metabolism decreases drastically and your body is in relax mode. Therefore, you will not get the "afterward" benefit so much as you would throughout the day.

I say if the afternoon is much better for you, and that's when you will be more inclined to do your best, then stick with that. You will reap the benefits either way.

I read a recent article in one of the magazines I get (have to find which one).. that' 4pm-6pm is the optimal time for a work out.. but I'm sure there's reasons why somebody .. or not everybody agrees...

I'll try to find the article
        2-15-10 194.8 - highest ever!
        2-20-10 190.4 - new scale
        3-20-10 177.8 - 1 month
        5-10-10 169.8 - 25 pounds gone!

And just to add to that, of course strength training is VERY important because the muscle built will burn more calories while at rest. The benefits of muscle are endless!

I've done this and, IMO, it is an extremely powerful practice that should be udertaken only with care and a certain amount of caution.

Anyone who does not think so should get up tomorrow morning, take a drink of water and go out for a run, hop on the stationary bike, jump on the treadmill and exercise for the length of time you normally do it, then, afterwards, eat when you're hungry, etc., as normal.

By early afternoon, if you don't notice "something different" about the way you feel, I'd be very surprised. By the end of the day, I would not be surprised if many who tried this are not debating whether they'll do THAT again tomorrow morning.

              Re: Workout in the morning?

LOL @ T.M.!!! I am sssssooooo not a morning person so getting up before the sun rises to exercise is definitely NOT on my "things to do" list!

I actually joined a gym and will be going right after I drop my children off at daycare in the mornings. I figure that I can put on my workout gear, drop the kids off and on my way home, hit the gym and then come home and proceed with my day. That way, it will be most convenient.

I tried the working out at night and for me, it did not work. I was up ALL NIGHT LONG...could not get a good night's rest to save my life! That's ideal because after my children go to bed, i'm free, but it sure as heck takes a toll on my sleep time. I decided to switch things up a bit and hit the gym during the day and study at night....we'll see how it goes!

                Re: Workout in the morning?

Every body is different with schedules and how their body actually handles the workouts. It sounds as if you would be able to eat a little something and get some water in before a workout. I say, do what works best for you.

I would prefer mornings only because I work 2 jobs and also take college courses. I always seem to have an excuse when coming home at night to skip the gym..

                  Re: Workout in the morning?

As atkinseers it will not matter what time you workout as you are a fat burning all day long BUT if you do a few min in the AM you will get your metabolism boosted earlier in the day. for weight loss doing 3 shorter workouts will give you a bigger fat burn cause you rev up your metabolism and get the afterburn going 3 times a day instead of just once.

I did it every morning since back in induction cause I have to wait an hour to eat after taking my thyropid meds and they should be taken first thing in the AM
