Re: The Purpose of Bulletin Boards

I've been really lucky... here.. and the board that was before this one... I'd be the first to admist I'm less than perfect on this thing......

and sometimes there's things that pop up that rub me the wrong way... but I guess I either let it slide.. or dish it back.. I dont' know...

there's a ton of stuff that gripes me... about the attitudes of some... the perception that the book is perfect... but i try to let it slide..... and benefit from the people that are helpful.. and always have been...

there are many here that can offer advice.. and be very helpful in a non-threatening way...

maybe it's just a personality thing.. but I do get it.. some people act like if you're not perfect.. it won't work..

Re: The Purpose of Bulletin Boards

I've discovered that each poster has a distinct personality. Some are friendly, some are obnoxious, some are pointless, and some are extremely helpful. Often is takes several weeks of posting to learn which posters fall into which categories...

Just keep in mind that a helpful poster is probably helpful to everyone, and an obnoxious poster is probably obnoxious to everyone. In otherwords, don't take it personal...

Remember, no one here KNOWS you. You are just another name on a board. In fact, I didn't even know you were male until after reading several posts.

Also remember, that when someone answers your questions, they aren't just answering you, they are also answering potential readers of the board in the future. So they aren't exactly thinking about how you will take what they are saying, because they want to make sure there aren't any misunderstandings for all of those future Atkineers...

In regards to your particular situation, the more weight you lose, the lower your BS numbers should go, especially if you keep your carbs between 15 and 20 each and every day with no cheats. That means taking the time to find out what you are actually eating every day, carb wise. If you want to lose weight, get healthy, get your diabetes under control, and live longer, you WILL take the time to do it right. You've gotten your feet wet, now it's time to jump in... Taking in to account the personality that you have portrayed in your writing, I know you can do it!

Re: The Purpose of Bulletin Boards

sometimes I know I call in the 'pointless' category.. but then again.. some threads are pointless.. lol.. but I feel bad if nobody responds.. so I will... just to try to encourage.. and let them know that somebody at least read the post...

I dont' try to offer much 'advice'..... I guess I'm not really qualified since I did lose weight (in 2005-2006.. ).. but then blew it.. and so I'm starting over..

I guess I should stop just chiming in.... like I'm doing now.. without really having anything to offer

Your advice would be how not to blow it... and how to get back on the bandwagon after blowing it... besides, the phrase 'chiming in' is cute

Do NOT underestimate your value... just because you are not "perfect" does not mean that you have nothing to contribute.

I love this quote: "In all of your adversities lie the seeds of equivalent advantages. In every defeat there is a lesson showing you how to win the next time."

I used to think I was bullet-proof when it came to being the "perfect" Atkineer... and I was, for a while. Then I discovered that I wasn't perfect.

But that doesn't mean that I don't have a great deal of experience to draw upon, to help myself and others. And the same goes for you, too!

              thank you both..

It's like one day.. you're at your goal (or close to it).. I was down to 135.. and then I dont' even remember exactly how.. or when it happened..

2006.. I retired... and then it began a string of stuff... people dying... I've had cancer twice.. (melanoma and thyroid.. nothing major).. but family members and their traumas.. and somehow.. you lose track.. and you're back on the cake and fries....

if nothing else... I don't want to let stress or stressors in my life make me lose sight of the goal this time...

I don't even remember when or how it went from 135 to 195.. not all of it anyway..

195 scared me.. made me cry.. and while I still have major problems (hopefully thyroid related).. cholesterol 319 or something.. and trigs 340.. I know that will get better... it just takes time....

bulletin boards are a place where real people... even if not known personally by each other.... it is nevertheless real people.. with real feelings... and real problems.... ... come to find help... support.. comfort... encouragement.. and yeah.. sometimes.. entertainment..

Re: The Purpose of Bulletin Boards

So I suppose you're talking about this thread, Forbey: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...-diabetic.html

No one was rude there with you there, imo. What did you expect? Pats on the back for cheating with Chinese food? People shocked that you can't lose weight and control your blood sugar while cheating with Chinese food? People saying "keep going, Forbey, your cheating is great for your blood sugar issues! " (The smiley is for effect, because some people seem to think that adding a smiley at the end of each post sends good vibes over the net.)

If you only like lengthy replies and think that sentences shorter than 20 words are written in "'bumper sticker' terminology", then you could add that in your signature, so that people know about it and can choose whether or not they want to reply to you. Did it ever cross your mind that some of us actually prefer what you think is "'bumper sticker' terminology"? That some of us might prefer advice given that way instead of reading 20-line long paragraphs? How is one supposed to know what kind of advice you prefer??? When I started Atkins, I sure didn't want to read War and Peace on forums! I wanted my posts to be addressed short and to the point.

And since when are you or anyone else entitled to tell people how they should respond? If you don't find some posts helpful or find them rude, then ignore them. Some of us actually learn from what you find rude and we find those posts helpful. Some of us might actually be on this board EXACTLY because of the kind of posts that you find rude, because we don't care about pats on the back, hand-holding and honeyed words. And did you think that some of your Atkins-related posts sound rude to others, but they just mind their own business and don't complain... because, heck, maybe other members find them helpful.

Some of you who replied with "Amen's" above seem to have a lot of experience based on your joining date, but I checked your posts and you probably answered 1 or 2 Atkins-related questions since I joined. If you think that you can give better advice, then why don't you do that, instead of just whining or joining others in their whining?

Re: The Purpose of Bulletin Boards

Glad to get off the nonsense and back on topic.

Speaking as a horizontally and vertically gifted individual (aka tall and fat) I realized a long time ago that I am not perfect and I am not worthless. NOBODY is. It does seem that humans tend to suffer from the smoker/former smoker syndrome. Seems like there are no bigger critics of smokers than former smokers. I guess the same could be said of former fat people. As in all situations, this does not apply to everyone, maybe not even the majority, but it definitely applies to some.

You would think that someone who could remember being the fat kid in school, the "Large Marge" in the office, would remember what it felt like to be ridiculed by classmates or remember over hearing someone say, "but he (or she) is such a happy person". I even remember how the "normal" people in church would refer to the fat girls as "sweet spirits." I guess somewhere along the line someone thought that was showing how you cared.

The problem is, this is a forum to allow individuals to feel at home talking about their challenges and successes using the Atkins Plan. One would think it would be forever obvious that empathy towards those beginning the program, struggling with the program or living in maintenance would all be in tuned to the sensitive nature of the emotions of everyone here.

                  But that is just me!

Thank you emphasizing my point regarding how NOT to talk to people. I'm sure when I research your posts I will most likely find more examples of how to properly treat your fellow Atkinsians with disrespect.

Sorry dear, I was going to apologize after finding that you tend to be very helpful in your responses, but the bad ones are building quickly!

As for my "rant", it isn't a rant, it is a discussion. It isn't about one person, it is about a bunch that I have passed by on my way through the forum. This one was particularly familiar to me.

Funny, you quoted me about empathy, only forgot to include the entire sentence, it wasn't about any one individual, it was about all the members in this forum.

I also find it odd that you picked on the "Amen" people based on their joining dates. It appears some of the joined before you did, as your profile says you joined February 10th, 2010.)
