  • Losing pounds and inches

My husband has lost 12 pounds and some inches around his waist during the first few weeks of induction. (very excited) He's down to the last hole on his belt.

He's very happy to continue to lose inches around his waist, but when will he start losing pounds again?

Also...for people over 300 pounds do you continue to lose large quantities like this for a while?

I realize that everybody is different and that the 12 pounds was a lot of water weight. If he continues to walk like we do now will it continue or is there a chance that there is a lull.

I'm asking, because I don't want him to freak out if his weight doesn't continue to drop as significantly as it has been. What's normal for this situation.

His main goal is to lose weight and be healthier obviously, but he just really wants to finally be under 300 pounds. I think that would lift his spirits a lot.

Thank you in advance for all of your support and encouragement.

    >>when will he start losing pounds again?>>

Crystal ball not back from the shop yet. <smile>

<<or people over 300 pounds do you continue to lose large quantities like this for a while?>>

Everyone loses at their own rate.

    >>I don't want him to freak out if his weight doesn't continue to drop as significantly as it has been>>

It probably won't drop as "significantly" (quickly?) as it he lost the 12 pounds. However, the slower one loses the weight, the more likely one is to keep it off.

Has he been eating clean? Has he been eating enough? Drinking enough water?

LOL!!! I know. I wish I could have a crystal ball right now, and I totally know everybody's different. I just want to get all the information I can so he doesn't get discouraged in any way. That way I can say,"Oh no..someone on the discussion board said it's perfectly normal."

He's still got a little emotion behind this which is understandable. We're doing this together, but he's having a hard time I think getting past the numbers I guess you could say.

He's a tad scared about it. For some reason he doesn't want me measure him. He knows he's losing inches, because of his belt. I think he just wants to hope in his mind that it's a huge amount. Instead of actually knowing that it's only a couple of inches.

It's significant enough that people have commented that don't see us very often. So, that made him feel really good.

He has been doing very well with eating. We've been making really good breakfasts (mostly quiche), and good lunches for him to take to work, then doing supper from Linda's Low Carb website.

She's a goddess, and I'm totally going to do a write up about her on our website.

He's been drinking lots of filtered and mineral water.

I just hope he's getting enough to eat. He's a big guy, and I told him to not go very long without snacking on something.

      Today he took:
      • two kielbasa type sausages (I forget what they're called)
      • 5 pigs in a blanket (snack)
      • small 2 cup salad (cherry tomatoes, spring lettuce, cucumbers, ranch dressing)
      • Meat sticks (snack)
      • 2 - 1 ounce string cheeses (snack)
Tonight we're going to have Mexican casserole from the induction recipe list.

That's a lot of processed meat there ... the kielbasa has sugar in it, I bet, along with a lot of sodium ... same with the "meat sticks". And 5 pigs in a blanket? What are the pigs?

How many net carbs a day is he (and you) getting from Induction vegetables? How many net carbs are you getting altogether?

        >> He's been drinking lots of filtered and mineral water.>>

        What's "lots" in ounces?

If he's over 300 pounds, then 150 ounces would be a good number for him to aim for.

As his belt is getting loser, that's a great indicator ... measuring him won't accomplish anything different.

Not losing pounds and losing inches is normal ... it's happened to us all.

          Re: Losing pounds and inches

It's not technically kielbasa. It's cased meat though, and we checked on the label, and it didn't have sugar in it. It's more like a smoked sausage.

The pigs in a blanket is the recipe from Linda's Low Carb, and it's ham.

I don't know how many net carbs, but I've been measuring. His salad today is 2 cups with 5 cherry tomatoes, and 4 cucumbers.

150 ounces??? He only drinks about 64 ounces of water a day. I thought that was a good amount, but I guess I was wrong. I'll let him know to step it up on the water.

The meat sticks are okay. They're Old Wisconsin Snack sticks. No carbs or sugar. It's kind of high in sodium though I guess. Calories in Old Wisconsin Snack Sticks (beef Sausage) - Nutrition Facts, and Healthy Alternatives - The Daily Plate Calorie Counter

Sugar has many names though. It would be a very odd processed meat that doesn't have some form of sugar in it.

            >> ham.>>

Again ... a processed meat, high in sodium, and generally with sugar.

            >> I don't know how many net carbs,>>

I urge you to count ... at least for a few days ... to see where you are.

You'll need to count in OWL anyway.

            >>His salad today is 2 cups with 5 cherry tomatoes, and 4 cucumbers>>

4 whole cucumbers or just slices?

            >>He only drinks about 64 ounces of water a day.>>

That would be the bare minimum on Atkins ... and the downside of not drinking enough is that your body will retain water for it's own uses ... and then you won't be expelling the fats, toxins, etc. that you want.

            >> The meat sticks are okay. They're Old Wisconsin Snack sticks. >>

Again ... I bet there's some form of sugar. The problem with using Daily Plate is ... there's no list of ingredients ... and it's the ingredients that tell the tale. The nutritional label simply isn't a reliable source of information. And some of their entries are from users, right? Again ... not always the best source.

Remember ... Dr. Atkins tells us that we should eat "whole, unproccessed" foods ... and right now, his lunch is pretty high on the "processed". Also, the Induction foods list tells us to avoid processed meats.

Oh....and I'm glad it's normal to lose inches and not pounds.

I don't want to push the whole measuring thing either. I think that when his belt and britches are lose....that's a good thing, and that's all we need to know right now.

Thank you for that, I'll tell him.

I'm just really surprised by his state of mind right now. It's like he's on a mission. He's got people all around him that are trying to offer him this, and offer him that.

He and I are both tired of people saying..."Oh, it's not going to hurt you to have a little."

He said he just wants to split in two when people say that, because he says..."Yes it will, because then I have to start all over again."

It makes him feel sad now, because a guy he works with comes in to work with a Mt Dew and Pop Tart for breakfast and that used to be him. He just keeps thinking about how stupid that was, but nobody ever taught him how to eat.

I just told him to concentrate on the good he's doing now though.

I think that's a good thing ... it keeps one focused.

That's pretty much how I felt when I was losing.

                  >> He and I are both tired of people saying..."Oh, it's not going to hurt you to have a little.">>

Yep. The thing is, you learn that you then don't do that to someone else ... that a "No, thank you" is all you should need to say.

The best you can do in return is to simply change the subject ... don't acknowledge their comments.

We've been being really careful when looking at the labels of things to make sure there aren't any additives.

We get our meat directly from farmers (pig and beef) as well.....so it's done the way we want it done at the butcher. We actually know the butcher... That's kind of why we get our own meat that way, because you never know what you're going to get at the stores.

I can say that there's not one "odd" thing on any of the labels of the food that we've been buying.

                    The cucumbers are slices.

Congrats on the losses so far! Weight loss when you have alot of weight to lose will eventually slow down after Induction. Some people may lose regularly but most will not. The best thing to do is keep eating right, exercising, drinking that water, and watching out for stallers and it will happen!

Thank you very much. I think he just wanted to know that it's normal that he's slowing down. We're going to continue Induction for a while, but I told him not to expect such a huge amount of weight all at once like that.
