  • Atkins Bars Question

So I am a little confused about the carb count on Atkins Bars. I have a Chocolate Peanut Butter Advantage Bar and the little bullet points on the front of the package list that there are 18g protein, 1g sugar, Only 2g net carbs, but the nutrition facts are as follows: Calories 240, total fat 12g, Total Carb. 22g, Dietary Fiber 10g, Sugars 1g, Sugar Alcohols 0g, Protein 18g.

I guess my question is, how are net carbs figured. I thought that you would subtract the dietary fiber from the total carbs, but that doesn't figure according to the Atkins Bar package. According to my figuring, there would be 11g net carbs (22g-11g), but the package says 2g net carbs.

    Please help.

    Re: Atkins Bars Question

Okay, I just read similar posts on this topic, and I see that there are hidden sugar alcohols called glycerin and that Atkins Bars are not good to eat. "Low carb junk food is still junk food." I am getting a little lazy with my meal prep, and ate one bar yesterday as a snack and one today as a pre-breakfast breakfast. I WILL NOT fall into this pattern. More bad habits that brought me here in the first place.

I am stalling and getting a little frustrated. I think I am not eating enough food, eating too much chicken, not enough variety in veggies, not enough water, too many diet colas, coffee...but I can say no added sugar or other bad carbs. A personal victory.

Also, I did the spit test today and it looks like it came up positive...yet another reason to give up coffee (and cheese, and mushrooms, and vinegar)...yikes

Just an FYI - you are on induction (according to your stats) - peanuts aren't allowed until Rung 6 as they are legumes.

I don't trust any food coming from the Atkins corporation because it's all been processed. Unless they start putting their stamp onto a Green Pepper or a side of beef, I'll be steering clear of their money making schemes.

        What's the "spit" test?

I do a lot of my meal prep on the weekends so I don't spend so much time during the week making meals. Maybe that would help?

Thanks for your input. I am just starting OWL, but even so, I am not ready to eat nuts yet, so I shouldn't have had a bar...you are right. I will keep away from processed foods. Preparing for the week over the weekend is a good idea.

The spit test is a test for yeast...not sure if I really have overgrowth...maybe I will just cut out the fore-mentioned items and see how I feel in a week or two.

Could you post a link to the thread you read? I don't see how they could be so bad. I could understand if you were eating like 4-5 a day (then again nothing is good in high quantities) but I normally have a Day Break bar for breakfast after my workout.

The deal with the bars is they contain ingredients that are not induction friendly or even lower rungs friendly

In addition to this reason why bars are not Induction friendly, I have found that the bars are not a good idea for some people, even in Maintenance.

To illustrate my point, I am pasting an entry I made into my Journal Stats almost a year after reaching my goal weight:

I absolutely need to stay the h*ll away from them.
