  • Basal Metabolic Rate...

I'm not new at this, but I don't feel successful yet. I fall off the wagon to much and I have finally came to the term that is could be me simply not eating enough for my big o' body!!!

I have found when I write down what I eat, I feel like a TOTAL PIG!!! Obviously, I had to eat alot to get to the weight, but gosh it just seems so much, especially if it is coming from meat and veggies!!! No icecream to help boost up those numbers

So my info is female/(335~ I gained but not real sure what I weigh, but about this amount) and 29 years old at 5'8")

When I plugged it into a BMR calculator I got 2288 calories a day (this caluculator didn't include activity) Somewhere I read that you would add 250 calories to that so that would be (2538!!! A DAY!!!)... so I said that can't be right.

I tried another that took in consideration your activity... it said 2957~ but also said if I'm trying to burn fat to eat 500 calories less so that would be 2457!!!! A DAY!!!!

Can this be right? What about those that eat 1,200 a day or even 1,800 a day... I mean we are talking an extra steak plus more fat and another big salad... Gosh..

Will I not get fat eating all of this day in and day out???

Anyone can make me feel I'm not just going to be a pig?
    ~Amanda
It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

    Yes, it can be right.

Remember, as you lose, the amount of calories you need will come down ... so you want to refigure every 25 pounds ... just to keep track!

    >>also said if I'm trying to burn fat to eat 500 calories less so that would be 2457!!!!>>

Atkins isn't a calorie in/calorie out diet, so don't follow that advice.

    >>What about those that eat 1,200 a day or even 1,800 a day>>

What about them? This isn't about "them" ... this is about YOU.

    >> Will I not get fat eating all of this day in and day out???>>

I've seen 400 pound + people get down to around 150 doing it by eating 250 above their BMR.

I see no reason why you can't.

Amanda, how many calories are you currently eating?

      I don't think ~2500 is a lot.

Honestly when keeping track way less then that maybe around 1400-1600 calories, but then I stay on plan/off plan because I start binge eating. I use to feel something is just "wrong" with me, there is also many emotional reasons, but honestly, Maybe it is just the fact I'm hungry and not eating enough.

I plugged in my numbers for today and an "ideal" day for yesterday into fit day and realized... It takes A LOT of Meat/Fat/Oil to make up 2,500 calories even including 4 oz of cheddar cheese. I got blocked and shocked trying to balance out a menu and to be honest I say, gosh if I eat all of that 2 thing: 1) I'll be stuffed and 2) How will I not just gain weight.

I weigh under 150 lbs and eat about 1800-1900 on average... and even go to 2000+ on some days.

It takes A LOT of Meat/Fat/Oil
Don't forget about 1/2 an avocado. It's high in fat and very nutritious.

            Re: Basal Metabolic Rate...

Goin, I was successful on my induction and then started eating less at 1300 cals a day. I thought it was enough but some people on here said it wasn't after I paused for 12 days and got frustrated.

So I have increased my calories (50-60% from fat) and tried to keep it that way. I go from 1500- 2000 some days, it's never the same. And it helps me. I am not losing weight quickly, but I am and that is all I care about. Today I ate close to 2k calories and I am a little afraid that I will gain weight still too. But so far it's had the opposite affect.

How about that Jax! The reason I asked about your carbs is because I think I started out like you. I did awesome on the first part of induction, but then I just wasn't as hungry and had a hard time getting enough carbs from vegies - let alone enough calories. I'm working on that right now. I am at about 30 net carbs a day and seem to be losing about 1 pound per week. I would like it to be a little faster. My average daily calories around 1500 so I'm trying to carefully increase it. It just scares me. I feel like if I eat that much I won't lose weight.

Women lose at the statistical rate of 1/2 to 1 pound per week.

The slower you lose the weight, the more likely you are to keep it off.

I know atkinsgal I just am an impatient person. I will say that I have more will power now than I have ever had in my life. Losing 1/2 to 1 pound per week is certainly better than gaining it. I feel great, have plenty of energy, and even the texture of my skin has improved.

1 lb a week is awesome. Like I posted earlier today I am only down 10 in 50 days. So you are doing GREAT!

I am doing tomorrow's menu on fitday and it's up to over 1700 calories already.
I'll post what fitday tells me of my previous days menus:

                          Tuesday: 1757 calories, 71% fat
Monday: 1209 calories 55% fat- did not count in oils I cooked with
Sunday: 1214 calories 63% fat- did not count in oils I cooked with
                          Saturday: 1949 calories 73% fat

Wow women, since I'm twice the woman as all of you I guess I should quit being so scared about 2,500 calories a day and JUST DO IT and then see what happens... WOW!!!

I just wanted to add that I really agree slower weight loss (over a period of time) really does seem to stay off longer. I have been doing Atkins since Jan of 09. In some how I'm so disappointed that it didn't come off faster.... in another way it is giving me a chance to appreciate my body more, come to terms that this is my life style of eating, and learn more about myself. I lost 99 pounds before in about 9 months and over the period of 5 years I was back up 100 pounds (of course 2 kids helped, but that is just an excuse)...

Wishing the two of you much successes.

                              Re: Basal Metabolic Rate...

I think you will need to keep your calories up because if you were eating a lot before and then you go and cut a lot your body will go into starvation mode and you won't lose.

I don't think 2k is unreasonable but for most of us it is a game until we can figure out what the fine line is from starve mode to weight loss mode. You will slowly decrease your calories intake because you will need less as time goes on.
My guess is you will need atleast 1500 by the time you get to your goal weight.

You know, I have two days of a lot of calories and the scale pushed up a little today. Not worried though because I ate more salt than usual yesterday and that's just my body. I also had 3 days in a row of significant weight loss and then for the next week i will probably go up and teeter and go back down again.

I just say to myself, it's better than being at 160 (what I was after I had my daughter). Therefore I will take a 2/10 lb increase over 22 lbs.

I have a hint of worry in the back of my head with my calorie in take for these two days but I am also interested to see what happens.

Let us know, do you use fitday? I love that site.
