  • Gained 5 pounds overnight

Hi everyone, I know we talked about this once before. I worked out at the gym pretty hard yesterday with weights. I weighed 192 this morning I weiged 196? I think someone said they gained overnight from lifting. My question is how should I expect to hold this 5 pound gain? And does anyone know why I would gain that much in less then 24 hours?

It's water weight ... not "fat".

Did you weigh yourself on the same scale?

      Hi warm-

From my readings online it is most likely one of two things

      1) water rentention: usual after heavy or new exercise

-I actually started doing very heavy lifting (for me). I did my set on Tuesday and have been the same weight up to today, even though my pants are a bit looser. So I am assuming I negated my weight loss with water retention.

      2) eating more after exercising: be careful with this, as we either get hungrier the more we exercise, or we feel that because we are being active we have cart blanch to eat as much as we wish.

Note that unless you are doing some heavy steroids this is NOT muscle gain. Women tend to gain between 1-2 pounds of muscle A MONTH tops.

Good luck with your exercise! I love it!

        Re: Gained 5 pounds overnight

When I was weighing daily, I know I would be up 2-3 lbs the day after weight lifting. I would do weights Tues and Thurs and by my weigh in day on Sunday, the extra weight was usually gone.

I only weigh once a week now so not sure if it still happens! I'm learning to not worry as much about what the scale says as long as I know I'm eating right.
        Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"
        STAC Restart: 1/05/09
        306/229/135 ~ 5'2" 77 lbs down!

        Goal #1: 247 - 2nd 10% (59lbs, 247, also 100 lbs total loss) - Met 1/4/10!!!
        Goal #2: 241 - Halfway to goal! (106 lbs lost) - Met 2/21/10!!!

        Goal #3: 222 - 3rd 10% - Lowest Atkins weight
        Goal #4: 210 - Still on track!
        Goal #5: 200/199 - 4th 10% - One-derland! End year goal!

Thanks everyone , Yes I use the same scale. I do enjoy working out, and I am doing more reps and increasing weights lifted.

No prob. Here's a relevant article. It's a "forever behind the zeitgeist" TIME article, so take it with a grain of salt

But it does make a good argument for watching what we eat if we want exercise to be a boon to our weight loss.

First of all congrats on all the weight you"ve already lost! You are an inspiration to me ... as I haven't been under 200 pounds in years! Anyway, like you, I can work my butt off at the gym, eat properly and still see a weight gain. I can only figure that even though I am eating the right foods, I am eating too much! You should be patting yourself on the back for even going to the gym... that scale can be a nasty thing sometimes. I know myself the power that nasty scale has over me. good luck and keep on losing!

                    Re: Gained 5 pounds overnight

Also, if you weighed in after working out it is very likely that you lost 2-3 pounds of water weight through sweating. So you most likely are averaging around 194 pounds. After working out, you always retain some water, which usually adds about a pound or two because your body uses that water to repair the muscles, protect your joints and to prepare for the possibility that you might losee all that water again......like an emergency storage. The body is amazingly effecient and it is very protective of itself.

Worry more about your average and less about the extremes. Not very exact, I know.

                          Re: Gained 5 pounds overnight

I had one of those "where on earth did 3lbs come from overnight" mornings this morning - on a rest day yesterday and didn't drink my usual quota of water - I've assumed my body is just levelling itself out and hanging on to the water in case I don't top up today!! I'm hoping with a good water quota today that it'll all flush itself out during the days ahead and be back to normal soon (don't think I'll weigh myself tomorrow though......)

Makes you more interested in learning how the body works though doesn't it? I mean I know I've exercised lots this week and I know my jeans are looser today, but the scales would tell me otherwise The moral of this for me is STOP WEIGHING MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!! Go by the clothes!!!!!!!!
