  • As you shrink out of clothes...

... what do you do with them?

Do you keep them to remind yourself where you've been? Or is it too easy to expand when it's a simple matter of putting on one pair of pants instead of another?

I was going to throw away a pair of jeans that are now too big, but I am thinking they might be a good reminder tacked to the wall...

Re: As you grow out of clothes...

I bag them up and put them out in the building. Will use them in a yard sale, donate them or something, they will not come back in the house. I've kept them too many times and yes it's too easy to just slip a pair of jeans on because your others are getting tight and promise you'll only wear them until you get it off then before you know it you are back into that size being snug. Not this time.

All I have to do is go to the store and look at the old sizes I wore to see how big my butt was then. That's all the reality slap I need

Re: As you grow out of clothes...

I get rid of them. I don't want to think that is ok if I gain a couple pounds because I have some old jeans I can slip into. I want my skinny jeans to keep me balanced. If I they start getting snug I know I need to do something because I have nothing else to wear.

I got rid of everything except my largest pair of jeans ... just as a reminder.

Some went to Katrina relief ... some went to a friend.

I kept my favorite outfit: a silk blouse and a silk pants. I use that for my "reality checks". See, sometimes I still feel like the 240+ pounder I did when I started Atkins. So I put on those clothes to see and feel that I'm not 240+ pounds anymore.

But the rest of my big clothes, I gave them away to Good Will.

My mom suggested it, but I should have made a crazy quilt or a quilt with those old clothes. But I didn't........

Re: As you grow out of clothes...

Oh, this question hits so close to home.

I lost a fair amount of weight (~60 pounds) a couple years ago on this WOE and obviously dropped a pant size or two. At the time, I made the decision poobears suggests to get rid of the old clothing. The act of throwing it away serves as a positive reinforcement stating that you have no intention of ever returning to that size again.

Then, of course, life got in the way of good intentions and I wound up back where I started. Now I'm (re)losing the weight, but initially was forced to repurchase some fat clothes until ketosis kicked in. Two weeks into the diet I can now squeeze back into the smaller clothes, but I'm still out about $100 for the temporary set.

Sure would have been nice to pull those fat jeans out of the attic instead of spending the extra money. And now I'm faced with deciding whether to throw out (donate, etc) new "fat" pants that are only two weeks old again! Ugh.

Perhaps if they are kept, but in an inconvenient location so that they can't be reused without a conscious act of digging them out of their "grave"? I'm still trying to decide what to do this time around...

Re: As you grow out of clothes...

The last time I lost 60 pounds, I bagged them up and put them in the basement. It was really easy to go downstairs and unbag them when I put the weight back on.

My recommendation, get rid of them, you want to be reminded of how big you once were, (I've got some doozies!) photoshop an old photo of yourself standing behind the new you. Or take a photo of you wearing the old clothes.

I'm too cheap to go out and buy clothes. If I pitch the big stuff, I'm more likely to loose the weight than go out and buy new bigger ones.

Re: As you grow out of clothes...

Part of the reason I throw mine out is because the reality of having to buy a bigger size pants motivates me to work to keep from having to get an even bigger size pants. It is almost a punishment to myself. Not only do I have to admit to myself I need a bigger size I have to actually spend money for that bigger size. Which in turn makes me not want to get any bigger. If that makes sense.

I still think we need a trade board or something that we could send our too big clothes to other members who need that particular size. It would save others money and clear out our closets as well.

I've have kept off 45 lbs for 5 years. Got rid of the fat clothes. Whenver I go up a few pounds I know I "have" to take it off. I would have no more clothes to wear and I absolutely refuse to buy a bigger size. Also, I never weigh. I "know" when I have gained weight. If I still had the fat clothes it would be too easy to just say to heck with it and keep on eating

Actually, that isn't a bad idea, but I would hate to have to pay for shipping and handling for a package of my old jeans! I think buying them would be cheaper.

Those priority boxes from the post office are reasonble. Shove as much as you can in the box for a set price. I would think the cost would be on the senders side and considered a RAOK. You know the ol saying what goes around comes around.

                          Hi Marla,

                          Remember...that bridesmaid's dress was only a dollar.

great name! FC is one of my fave movies, and zero hedge is one of my fave sites...so double plus.

I recently addressed this on another forum. Baggy stuff, when paired with leggings or tights is very in right now, as is tying baggy shirts like in the 80s. You can also make small cuts on the back or side of t shirts or even blouses and tie the ends together to make tighter. With shorts or tights it'd look SO cute. You can also get a stretchy belt to draw attention to your waist.

I have kept one pair of my largest jeans as a reminder. The rest have been donated away most of the time. I didn't give up as much the first time around and that made it easier for me not to get back on program and regain alot of weight.

This time, I'm giving more stuff away. I'm about due for some spring cleaning and will donate a bunch of items again. I'm NOT going back to those sizes again!

They are GONE! And so will the clothes off my back in time. I don't want any reminders of how big I used to be, and I found that when the clothes I was packing up to give to goodwill were sitting around and I forgot to do some washing I'd dig into them and wear 'em anyway even though they were too big and I had to use like safety pins or something to tighten them a bit...they did NOTHING for me...and frequently I found myself holding them back up again, or constantly hoisting them from below my underpants line...annoying. I chucked 'em.

I have enough pictures of me wearing all those clothes that I don't need to keep anything to remind me.
