I have the stomach flu, what do I do? All of the stuff I used to eat and drink when I was sick is high carb. Help please...

Lots of water, diet ginger ale, tea.
If it's really a stomach flu, the best thing is to eat what you think you can keep down ... and then when you're better, resume Atkins.J.

If you are throwing up, The best thing is to rest the stomach. So just drink broth, fluids, I like decaf tea when I am sick, I like it room temp.
Don't eat anything for about 24 hours. Once you can keep things down make soup with a little chicken. Start with that or scrambled eggs. And work up. slow is the key.
I am sorry. My kids have just gone through this. go slow don't force eating. Get better!

I hadn't even thought of broth, or sugar free ginger ale/jello or the other things mentioned (don't think I can do scrambled eggs yet). I guess I just kinda panicked. I really want to stay on the program and I worry any of the things you are "supposed" to do when you are sick will mess me up. I'm sipping tea now and have some broth on the stove. I really hope those things can tide me over till I am better.
Is it ok if to eat sugar fee jello that has aspartame? It's all I have at home unless there is a way to make plain gelatin (I do have that) with splenda.

hydration is all you need until you are better so if hot liquids stay down have some tea or broth. if you need cold stuff freeze some tea or legal drinks and then lick your frozen "pops" to slowly get hydrting liquids in. if the tummy flu symptoms remain after a day or 2 you might need to add some electrolyets to your liquids but you could do that with a shake of sea salt in each drink or ice pop.

Clear liquids as others suggested until you are no longer vomiting. This virus is really going around. The vomiting can last up to 48 hours, but usually doesn't last more than 8 to 12 hours if you get a handle on the liquids. Ice chips are good if even small amounts of clear liquids cause vomiting.
The other side of this virus is the diarrhea! It can last up to 5-7 days if you don't get a handle on the diet changes. The key is no sugary fluids or foods because they increase the rate of diarrhea. Of course on Atkins that should not be a problem. Bland foods. We usually recommend the BRAT diet but bannans/rice/applesauce are out. T stands for tea or toast depending on who you ask. Bland foods with processed ie broken down already foods like chicken soup, oopsie rolls, S/F jello, and such are the best choices.
Usually if you have more of one side of the illness vomiting you will have less diarrhea and the obverse is true also. The key is to make sure you urinate once every 4-6 hours and that if you have a fever that it responds to medication. If it doesn't that may mean you are on the way to dehydration so get to a MD sooner rather than later.

When I was sick in the past I did the BRAT diet (T being toast) and had 7UP to drink. That's why I panicked... none of that is OK with this WOE. I'm gonna put on a movie for the kids and nap while my jello is setting up.age, 28

Because BRAT diet foods are low in fiber, protein, and fat, the diet lacks enough nutrition to help a child's gastrointestinal tract recover. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that kids resume eating a normal, well-balanced diet appropriate for their age within 24 hours of getting sick. That diet should include a mix of fruits, vegetables, meat, yogurt, and complex carbohydrates.
Both children and adults need to drink plenty of fluids while they're sick to prevent dehydration. Water is good, but adding broth, a sports drink, or a rehydration solution such as Pedialyte can help replace lost electrolytes.~Megs~

You can make Atkins soup by using a stick blender or food processor to get cooked meat and veg into a puréé which you can add water or stock to with some cream or butter if you like the taste.
A good way of getting your fat/protein/carbs in when you cannot chew and swallow.
When you are at the stage when crackers or toast sound good you can make cheese or flax crackers and stay on Atkins too!Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Yes, but ultimately many people try to feed their children while they are still vomiting! Or offer pizza just as soon as they aren't vomiting! And wonder why they vomited again! I am a pediatric nurse and I get these calls and patients in our office daily! (I was also an oncology nurse for most of my career before I changed to peds for the last 5 of my 20 years in practice, so I could spend more time with my kids)not2late

Although your quote over all is true for the AAP, Gatorade, sports drinks etc, are not the best choice of replacement fluids- they are very acidic and high in sugar, which continues to irritate the intestinal mucosa contributing to overall Nausea/Vomiting/Diarrhea. Fever and poor urine output are the clues to dehydration. Also if you feed child/adult something that is heavy in nutrients, their GI system is not going to take the time to process it to gain the nutrients from the intake, it is going to be moved quickly either up or out the other end! The BRAT diet is not meant to go on for days, it is a stepping stone to resuming a full diet as tolerated... slowly!
If done correctly foods may be reinstated in 24 hours as long as the person is not continuing to vomit.
Think about it, do you want to eat if you just vomited???

I'm still alive! I felt really bad yesterday and am so thankful for all the advice. I was able to keep down some tea, sugar free jello and broth.
I think I am going to try and eat today and I have just one more question. Do you all think that's OK? I know I am not at the right OWL rung yet but I was thinking I might try a few almonds this morning. I was also thinking with how little I eat (mostly concentrating on staying hydrated) I'm going to eat today they shouldn't make me go above 25 net carbs.
I was just trying to think of something kinda bland and light that wasn't crackers or toast..... I liked the Idea of the cheese "crackers" and will try those this afternoon maybe, but right now the thought is just kind ugh.age, 28
