  • Bowels are uncooperative

Sooo...is it considered constipation if you really don't feel like you have to go? I feel SOMETHING in there, but it has put so little effort in making it's presence known, I feel like it almost isn't the same thing and needing to go and being unable to. My last BM was Tuesday evening, and I tried to go today, but nothing really happened (sorry about the graphicness!) Here is what I am trying to do to combat this issue, if anyone has any input or suggestions, I would love to hear!
I have just finished induction (210-194 woohoo!!) and am trying to move myself into rung one. I was eating about 10-15 net carbs of veggies during, plus cheese, so as of today I'm upping it to 20-25 net, and cutting back on the cheese. My eating varies, but it tends to be between 1600-2100 clories a day. According to fitday my induction %age is about 68 fat, 28 protein and 4 carbs...I do count the oil i put on the pan to cook with tho, and that affects the fat intake quite a bit.
I take a 30 minute fast-paced walk every other day (started 2nd week of induction), do about 20 each sit up and leg lift every morning and drink MINIMUM 100 oz of good ol' H20. Oh, and I take centrum silver.
My mother gave me a bottle of metamucil today, do you think that will help? I checked the ingredients, no flavorings or added sugars or anything, the carb count per pill reads >3, as does the fiber...
I really have a tight budget, so it's hard for me to buy a lot of different supplements. I am certainly going to try the metamucil, but does anyone have any other ideas that might help??

I was counting the oil I cook with in the pan. Are you eating veggies high in fibre like spinach, broccoli and celery? You always have the option of adding a bit of psyllium husks to your foods. Check your copy of DANDR for more of Dr. Atkins recommendations for dealing with constipation.

I will def try to up the firbrous veggies, thank you Farley. Should be easier now that I'm moving to OWL rung 1...Yes, I do recall hearing about the psyllium husks...what exactly are those? Would they be in the vegetable section of the grocery store? If I take those AND metimucil, do you think it wpould be too much?

        Re: Bowels are uncooperative

I think metamucil (sp??) IS psyllium husks, so I would not double up on them, at least to start with.

I buy mine from a health food shop btw, I don't think they are in grocery shops (at least not in UK). I culd never add them to water and drink them without gagging so used to mix a spoonful with mayo and have it with a chopped celery snack. It made a little taste difference but not unpleasant.

Make sure you up your water as these supplements attract water to them, and if you are too low on water it might increase any 'blockage' issues.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

          Re: Bowels are uncooperative

Q: Aren't gastrointestinal issues always fun to talk about?
          (answer below)

I have bought psyllium husks at The Vitamin Shoppe and at GNC. Since you already have the sugar free Metamucil, I would try that first since it's mostly the same thing. The stuff I get from the health store looks like bran flakes and has absolutely no taste whatsoever. Like Elizellen, I am always looking for ways to "sneak" it in to my menu since it is absolutely "blech" when mixed with water!

Another food item that works wonders for me is jalapeños -- the ones that come sliced in a jar with the pickling juices. They really light a fire in my intestines (pun intended), and while my toilet visit is somewhat "heated" it seems to fix the problem of the past several days hiatus.

Of course, I don't think it's necessarily bad to go a few days without a BM. Meat and other whole foods tend to take a little longer to break down in our system versus the pre-processed foods some of us were eating prior to the low carb lifestyle. In addition, I for one ate a lot more in a day previous to this WOE which created more garbage for the "collection".

          A: NOT!

By the way, your weight loss results look awesome, even with the "hiccup" you apparently experienced in there somewhere. A one-time weight of 285 and currently sitting pretty (literally, I'm sure) at 193? SWEET!

              Re: Bowels are uncooperative

The cheapest solutions I've found on this WOE for this problem are exercise, increasing water intake and eating high fiber items. Pumpkin works REALLY well for me in this department. More frequent departures! That said, you most likely will NOT have the same frequency and volume of evacuations as you did when you consumed carbage. Eating whole unprocessed foods just produces less.

Vitamin C and magnesium moves things along without cramping, backing up or feeling bloated. Not expensive either.

Something that's worked for me is putting 1 Tbs ground flax seeds in a mock danish. I make my mock danishes a little differently, I just use 1 egg yolk so it doesn't taste too "eggy."

Lots of spinach works too! (just not in your mock danish LOL )

Thanks everyone for the helpful and unabashed replies LateNite-thanks for the compliment, my original drastic weight loss happened so long ago that it doesn't produce much comment from ppl anymore, and it's def nice to hear once in a while!
I appreciate everyone's input...I'm on day 2.5 of metamucil, and nothing yet, so i'm definetly combing through the responses for anything i can find...I'll try vitaminshoppe or something for the psyllium and maybe switch the metamucil for the real deal and i LOVE pumpkin, so i will def check out that road, and as a former danish adorer I will def have to look at that recipe!! Is it anywhere on this site, or is it in the book? Thanks again fellow Atkinsers
