  • Newbie trying to carb count

Hey guys...this is my first post, and really new to a low carb diet. And, Im actually really enjoying it!

Anyway, I was at the store searching for a healthy low carb(ish) bread one of the Atkins recipes called for. But I was confused about how to count carbs and get the net carb total. My understanding is carbs minus fiber right?

Well I found a brand at the local heath food store and it said Atkins friendly low carb bread..."3 net carbs per slice" on the outside of the package. But when I looked at the nutrition chart it said 15 carbs (minus) 2g of fiber. So Im a little confused on how they came up with 3 carbs/slice? Which should I listen to?

    Good news - bad news

Bad news is that if you are on Atkins induction where we start bread is not allowed
Good news is that by the time you get to rung 9 when bread is allowed you will be an expert carb counter

But not sure what is up with that bread. Did it have glycerine or sugar alcohols?

Happy to have you here. Welcome

      Hi

Welcome to our international ADBB family

As Liv said, those 'iffy' carb counts on the front of the package are probably due to them using one of the ingredients that some manufacturer's feel do not affect our digestion so they deduct them to get a lower 'effective' carb count.

Better to rely on the nutrition panel till you know why they think it is as low carbs as they claim.

Check out the ingredients list to see what is actually in it.
This will tell you which phase of Atkins and level/rung of OWL it is actually suitable for.

AS far as I know none of the commercial so-called 'lowcarb' breads have only induction ingredients.

You can make substitutes using the 'revolution roll' recipe or the 'muffin in a minute/mug' recipe, often called MIM for short.

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

It's the same with the Atkins bars. They show a very low net carb count on the front but if you turn it over and subtract carbs - fiber you get a much higher count. One was something like 18 carbs but 3 net carbs on the front of the package. They get that # because they take the 18 carbs - 3 fiber and also - 12 sugar alcohols. Very sneaky.
