  • Serious Question about GTT!

OK, in the 4 books I'm reading (or re-reading depending on the book); DANDR02, Atkins For Life, Atkins Diabetes Revolution and TNT Diet (all low carb); they all recommend having a Glucose Tolerance Test.

Having just finished a search on the web for information regarding the GTT, each one lists it as a test only given to test for potential gestational diabetes.

Dr. Atkins lists the GTT as a test to verify if the subject, actually produces insulin and how big the changes are. From my understanding, the amount of change could assist the doctor in determining if a patient should be responsive enough to the Atkins Diabetes Plan to be able to significantly reduce, or eliminate, Diabetes medicines and return the patient to normal blood glucose levels.

I go to see my Dr. tomorrow and plan on asking him to update the status of my cholesterol, triglycerides glucose A1C, serum insulin, and check my liver, kidney and thyroid functions

I also plan on asking about a 2-hour Post Prandial Blood Glucose Test and/or GTT (maybe a C-peptide test).

Anything else I should ask about and any other comments or suggestions that might be helpful?

    Thanks,

    forbey

Forbey, they don't usually make you do that test unless your blood sugar is abnormal on the regular CBC, or if you have sugar in your urine.
It's a disgusting test, it takes hours and the stuff they make you drink is nauseating. It's also possible that without those other indicators that justifuy the test, that your insurance wouldn't cover it.

    Just so you know.

        Re: Serious Question about GTT!

the A1C test wasn't availible for folk back when Dr Atkins wrote his books and in DANDR he warns us in DANDR he would not recommend having one done after starting Atkins cause you have to carb load for 3 days prior he says 150 grams worth.

he also recommends getting an insulin draw done during that GTT if you are getting one.

I understand, Going off Atkins for 4 days is doable, if it has a chance of giving me information to help me fight the disease. So far, its been A1C and insulin till I explode like a balloon.

you have not been on atkins for 6 months there for a total cholestoral test will say you have horrible cholestoral even though it has gotten way better

what ever you do don't get a total cholestoral test done unless its a full pannel test one that measures all sizes of your LDL

when you start atkins the healthy large fluffly type of LDL spikes and it takes 6 months to filter out the bad small dense LDL from your pervious way of eating but you see untill the 6 months are up a total cholestoral test will say your cholestoral is horrible even though it has gotten ALOT better this is why total cholestoral tests are a useless scam that trys to get people on horrible cholestoral lowering meds

your HDL recycles your LDL and thats most likely the reason why it takes 6 months or longer for some people to filter out the bad small dense LDL after starting atkins

if you wait 6 months and then only get a full pannel cholestoral test it should show awesome results

you can mostly beat that corrupt total cholestoral test by sticking to atkins for 6 months before geting a total cholestoal test although the doctor will not know how much of the LDL is the good type and your LDL will still be on the slightly high side that will worry him. but obviously it will be the good type so you got great cholestoral but he won't know that with that crappy test

YouTube - The Cholesterol Lie: What Your Doctor Doesn't Know

edit: wait have you been on atkins for 6 months yet?

            also becareful of these drugs

i think they can really screw your cholestoral up and make you unable to get good cholestoral if you take them

              Re: Serious Question about GTT!

I've been on Atkins since February, I was on an Atkins weighted Weight Watchers program for 10 months before then. As of February 09 I was 354 pounds. Now I'm 288.

When my Dr. does a full blood panel he has all facets of cholesterol done. If he does one every 6 months, and as I plan on being on Atkins from now on, the next panel should be better. But the fluffy LDL is new info to me.

              Thanks,

              forbey

                Re: Serious Question about GTT!

ok im guessing he will do the normal total cholesterol test

so you have only been on the diet for 2 months? just be prepared that hes going to be completely 100% horrified at your cholesterol and hes going to say your diet is horrible and such

but like i said already your cholestoral is actually geting WAY better and you can see for yourself your body is doing alot better too but anyways just don't freak out at how your doctor reacts from the total cholesterol test xD

unless your doctor does a full pannel then he will see the giant spike in LDL is the healthy type of LDL that has no health risk

but most places do not do full pannel tests

It is what drives Weight Watchers advisors NUTS!

I had to follow a recognized weight control program for a minimum of 6 months to see if I qualified for the surgical procedure (we are currently trying to avoid.)

So I went on Weight Watches. They count points and want you to get a certain quantity of points from carbs (they really do want you to get good carbs) except, I react badly to carbs. So I went with the Weight Watchers plan, with a major reduction in carbohydrates and I refused to eat margarine, low fat salad dressing (Miracle Whip) and low fat ranch dressing. I also refuse to eat just egg whites. Sorry, I like egg yolks!

So the whole WW thing worked OK until December when I not only stalled at 290, but I started gaining it back, WHILE STILL FOLLOWING THE PLAN! Needles to say, I'm back on Atkins, lost the weight I gained back and I'm currently working of figuring out, by using the advice of Dr. Atkins (DANDR02) and in the Atkins Diabetes Revolution.

                      Re: Serious Question about GTT!

the bad cholesterol is known as VLDL and it used to be thought that 1/5th of our triglycerides were the VLDL so 1/5th of Triglycerides were added to the LDL and HDL to create our total cholesterol number.

Now they can measure the VLDL as part of the LDL total and tell you if your high LDL is from high VLDL or from the partical A LDL known as the fluffy kind, they still add 1/5th triglycerides to the other numbers.

too bad your meter isn't out of calibration and your still high blood glucose numbers are false readings.

I know what you are saying about the meter. Sunday morning I got up, weighed myself and it said I dad lost 30 pounds over night! Unfortunately, the trousers waist line didn't agree!

Yeah, me too. However, after all of the warnings I got prior to the test when pregnant, I was relieved to find that it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared.

Now, that colonoscopy drink prior to the proceedure... not looking forward to that. I turn 50 Sunday, and my doc will be referring me to have one when I go for my annual checkup this summer. I hear that drink is truly disgusting...
