  • Peripheral health issues improved by Atkins?

Has anyone had any unexpected/unadvertised benefits from Atkins (e.g. other than weight loss, better cholesterol numbers, etc.)?

I feel like I've heard people talk about low carb diets causing an improvement in ADHD symptoms, for example. I'm just curious: Has anyone had any unexpected benefits from following Atkins?

My asthma and allergies improved to the point I only have to take 1 medication only when I need it (down from 5 daily medications.)

There are dozens of afflictions, from asthma to impotence, (and the rest of the alphabet as well) that getting control of your insulin and/or your weight will positively effect. My back doesn't hurt as much as it used to because I'm not lugging around that spare semi tire I used to have. My eyesight has improved (something about having syrup run through your veins that stresses the eyes.)

I mentioned elsewhere, that I have had a problem with recurring, persistent skin sores that are now clearing up since LAST WEEK when I started getting my sugars under control. Everything heals quicker, feels better and looks better when you get control of your health.

Re: Peripheral health issues improved by Atkins?

healed my IBS-D which was ruining my life took 6 monthst to fully heal but im happy also i can't eat any starches cause then my IBS acts up again that means rung 8 and 6 are off limmits but thats why people test the rungs to see what works for them

cured my obesity and its great for type 2 diabetics and people with heart disease as well

it improves just about every health thing there is on your body

also all that saturated fat will boost your large healthy fluffly LDL which has no health risk but a total cholesterol test will not show that it will just show all LDL and if its too high it will say its bad so thats why its best to wait 6 months and then get a full pannel test if you want a cholesterol test

but you should not worry about cholesterol cause glucose and other forms of sugar cause much more heart disease and im sure everyones cholesterol gets better when doing atkins

take eskimos for example who eat a diet of up to 80% fat and is loaded with saturated animal fats they have 0% obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes

don't you think if saturated fat caused heart disease dont you think atleast one eskimo who ate there native diet would have heart disease?

the whole saturated fat being bad for you was a lie and this lie has caused many health problems because it got people to avoid very healthy foods such as eggs, meat, liver, butter and then it got people eating horrible unhealthy foods such as soy, canola oil, items low in fat, bread, pasta

a low fat diet = low saturated fat = low amounts of the healthy large fluffy type of LDL that does not get stuck or turn rancid and has no health risk

i do have a problem with the new atkins book that has recently come out though cause it says if your vegetarian you can eat soy... soy is a terrible terrible food and should not even be called a food

theres only 3 types of soy that are even remotely safe to eat because they have been 100% properly fermented but i have never seen thoughs types of soy being sold on the market ever. its always the bad dangerous health hazzordus types of soy that i see added into food items on the market no amount of soy is safe to eat and i know if dr atkins was still around he would have figured out how bad soy is and not have recommended it in his new book. also soy lethicin is bad too

I suffered terribly from heatburn & gas before Atkins. They are both gone. My acne cleared up and I don't snore anymore (according to my husband)

I must have a true anxiety problem because I still have A LOT of it, I discussed it with a psychologist recently.

Acne- it's worse now :-( But I think that is due to my BCP

But what I have seen improvement in is my concentration. I also am less dizzy and feel less "out-of-it."

I have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis and this way of eating has helped tremendously with both. It's also helped the hypothyroidism but that's more from the weight loss I think.

Less pain, less fatigue, more energy, helped the depression, not hungry, got rid of lots of foods that weren't good for me (processed foods), started eating lots of great veggies and fruits, drinking water, stopped drinking soda, started exercising, etc. Got rid of my IBS-D and other digestive issues.

And it's done WONDERS for my confidence and personality. I'm much more outgoing and positive.

Since I was 18 I have had, what I like to call, "existential" panic attacks. Any time I would think about death, unconsciousness, and the finality of it all I would have a VERY severe panic attack, and was just kind of a generally anxious person. These panic attacks came on about once or twice a month, and they were awful. I went to the doctor, but he just told my mother that I was probably doing drugs and that was that. I suffered on for a very long time, learning they were just a part of life. Ever since I discovered that low fat/high carb diets are detrimental to one's health and started cutting carbs/upping fat I have not had ONE panic attack. Even when I didn't follow Atkins to the letter it was the one most constant benefit that I have seen. I can now enjoy my love of Sartre without freaking out.

I believe my brain was not being nourished properly. I ate VERY low fat and high carb and that is not the way to feed your mind or body.

I can definitely state that Atkins rid me of hypertension, depression and acid reflux. I do also highly recommend checking into amino acids to help with things like anxiety (GABA) or stress (5HTP) or depression, since years of standard American diet robs our brains of those needed amino acids that it takes even healthier eating a very long time to replenish. I recommend Julia Ross' book The Mood Cure in addition to the Atkins book for overall mental and physical wellness.
