    LOL!

    To me skinny/thin is interchangeable with "thin" being slightly more complimentary. Skinny can mean undernourished to some people...seems more of a compliment that women would want....I don't think any guy wants to hear he's "skinny."

      Either way I take both skinny and thin as a compliment!!!!
      I'm hoping to get even more compliments like that in the coming months!

        Skinny, to me, means puny. I wouldn't take skinny as a compliment.

            I agree. When I think of people who are skinny I think of those gross pictures of Nicole Richie and Mary Kate and/or Ashley Olsen that were on the covers of the magazines where you could see bones sticking out everywhere. To me, skinny is synonymous with unhealthy. When I think of the word thin I think "smaller than average" but still healthy. So I'd much rather be called thin than skinny.

            Then again, at this point in my life I'd rather be called anything but fat (or any derivation thereof including, but not limited to: "chunky," "heavy," "overweight," "big," "hefty," "thick," "plus-sized" or "large marge.")

            I'd jump for joy if someone was to just call me "average" sized.

            My own boyfriend not only doesn't comment on how much weight I've lost (43 lbs.) since January, but evidently doesn't seem to notice one bit. Okay, I realize that on someone who's as tall as I am (5'9") 43 lbs. probably only looks like 15 lbs. on someone else but dang, surely you've noticed SOMETHING. I went from size 22 jeans being snug on me to having 16's be loose. I know I don't look like Heidi Klum or anything but still... it just makes you want to

              Re: Is skinny smaller than thin?

              No males have commented in here so I will take one for the team. For guys, commenting on a woman's weight (even complimenting) is a very touchy thing. The reason? Exactly what you all have been discussing. It's very easy for guys to say something and have it interpreted the wrong way.

              There's also the "every day" thing. When you see someone every day, you tend not to notice weight loss as much as you would if saw them once every week or two.

              I haven't met one female to date that isn't sensitive about her weight to some extent, which is why guys have such a hard time commenting on it.

              That being said - you guys look thin

                Re: Is skinny smaller than thin?

                when I was young, people always said 'you are so skinny' - I didn't take it as a compliment and knew they meant I should gain weight.

                Obviously, I don't hear this anymore I think they are saying something different these days...

                My husband is my biggest support. He doesn't compliment me often, but when he does - it's thrilling. I try to compliment him also, if I can really see something different. We're on this together, we really need to push each other - and those little compliments now and again really help!

                    Re: Is skinny smaller than thin?

                    Carne hit it on the head: "no man wants to be called skinny" Well my husband is. He has very long skinny legs. My legs are larger than his. I married him hoping our kids would be tall and lanky because I was not. And I have called him skinny (in the legs). Well our daughter has tree trunk thighs right now!

                    I appreciate the guys perspective on the weight loss subject. If my dad, who says 10 words to me in a year can chime in, I think my husband could take notice.

                    I was happy with the compliment. He loves the jeans I was wearing yesterday so I figured he should be impressed.

                    Jules, at days shy of being 30, I too look at those models in a magazine and wish I could look like them. Then I think I would have to starve myself and that ain't happening! And I think ALL of those photos are photoshoped.

                    Areyou....thanks for the compliment. We are all going to look thin very soon!

                      Re: Is skinny smaller than thin?

                      OH MAN! Is this a loaded thread!

                      When dealing with the significant ogre, I mean other , especially for us men, it's a no win situation!

                      "Do I look fat?" Men - Don't answer that!

                      Skinny, thin, thinner, it's like Neccie Nash (she's not fat, she's thick! Her words, not mine.)

                      Personally, I've never been skinny or thin. I'm not interested in looking thinner;

                      better, maybe;

                      hot...we're getting there;

                      STUDLY! Heck, I've got that one down pat, even with 60 pounds of excess me! (OK, I'm just kidding. If you can't laugh at yourself you might as well just quit!)

                      I think the bibgest problem, like someone else said here, when you look at each other every day, sometimes it is difficult to notice subtil changes. Which is also why after decades of loving together (which is much better than living together) many men can say with honesty that their better half is more beautiful today than the day they met. We look at other things besides gray hair, wrinkles and a few excess pounds. (Hopefully, she does too.)

                      My wife is also on Atkins. This is the first time for here. She has lost 20 or so pounds. This morning she was taking measurements and pointed out that for the first time in years her hips are smaller than her bust and her waist is smaller than both (Me thinks that is called and hourglass figure?)

                      I gave her an enthusiastic Marine "Outstanding!

                      Then she told me she has lost an inch off her bustline, I told I was sorry ! We will hit our 32 year aniversary on July 11th. So we handle criticisms, sarcasm and humor a tad different than newlyweds or bfs/gfs.

                      As for me, if I had to chose between thinner or skinny, I would definitely prefer thinner!

                      Just remember, if someone, your significant ogre or not, says you look like you are losing weight; there is no reason to turn bashful, become upset (like saying "so you think I was fat before?") or even explaining that you are on Atkins. A simple thank you is the most gracious way to express appreciation for the fact someone noticed your efforts and your improvement!

                        well said forbey. We're going on 25 years, and a lot of women wouldn't take the things that my husband says to me; but I know his humor, I know he loves me and I know he likes me [which to me is the most important] - he just does it for shock value. I never ask him how I look, I know how I look - I just wait for the compliments and appreciate them when I get them.

                            Mr Meow rarely comments on my weight anymore, out of sheer terror. I have been so sensitive to any comments over the last 32 years, he's sure that whatever he says, it will be wrong. Maybe your husband is hesitating for the same reason.
