  • Getting Abs on Atkins

    Hi everyone,

I weigh 174 pounds and know from experience that my abs come out really well at about 164 pounds, thats about 8% body fat. I have been doing intense regular weight training for two years and i know that the abs are there, i just need to get the fat layer off.

Since I'm already in the healthy weight range at 174 will it be possible to loose 10 pounds using atkins to uncover my abs?

Already being at a healthy weight won't my body absolutely resist loosing any more of its fat stores without me starving myself?

Do you think a body builder get to 4% body fat just using atkins, since that is below the healthy body fat level?

    Re: Getting Abs on Atkins

if you when't on the fat fast of atkins and also ate low cal you could prob most likely get it but the fat fast is not healthy thats why its limmited to only last for 1 week and is only reserverd for speical people

but trying to get a lower than healthy bodyfat% it may be your best chance eating a diet of up to 90% fat your body may be less worried to let go of its fat

but you also may lose muscle from lack of protein since your a body builder so maybe try only 85% fat

also how long have you been eating low carb? has your muscles adapted to low carb yet?

also the carbohydrates you do eat in a day spread them out through out the day don't eat them all in 1 meal

also if you don't do atkins fat fast i don't know if you will lose anymore fat past the healthy level but you shouldnt gain any either

also make sure you and others know that if you do the fat fast of atkins then your not doing proper atkins cause atkins wouldnt want someone doing something unhealthy

      Re: Getting Abs on Atkins

One of the problems Atkins ran into at the beginning of his Diet Revolution days was the lack of research. Since then that lack has been more than adequately filled.

If you want to seriously mix the Atkins WOE with weight lifting, find the book "Men's Health TNT Diet". One of the authors, Dr. Jeff Volek, was working with Dr. Atkins before he died. Since then Volek has become one of the world's leading researchers on the low carb WOE and of weight lifting on a controlled-carb plan. Volek has dispelled the myth that you have to add fat to your body while increasing muscle mass (followed by a period of cutting fat in your physique).

Another source of information on how to build muscle and stay "competition" ready would be Frank Zane, (multiple Mr. Universe winner.)

        Re: Getting Abs on Atkins

Sorry for the lengthy time to respond, I've been doing some more research.

The plan is to aim for about 2500 calories a day but never let myself go hungry as it usually results in binging.

Ill be getting 85% of calories from fat, and keeping carbohydrates below 20 grams and protein below 80 grams. Once i start cramping due to depleted glycogen and water loss I will eat a bit more carbs and protein.

My staples will be the very high fat nuts, my homemade mayonnaise, pork belly bacon and eggs.

Ill be doing weight training at least 3 times a week. I also play soccer which is usually 1 night training a week and a game. How much exercise i get done is really Dependant on how much work I get at uni.

Also just want to say, I'm not a body builder, I'm just interested in body building. I'm aiming for a more athletic body type like gymnast.

Ill keep you guys posted on how I'm going.

I've been eating low carb for about 6 months. The amount of carbs i eat doesn't really affect the weights training, I find that my energy levels are more dependant on how motivated I am that day and how I feel mentally.

There is a very good chance that your cramps are more due to dehydration than not enough carbs. Try pushing the water and adding supplemental Potassium and Sodium. Check with some of the more reputable lifters in your gym regarding safe supplements.

Each gram of glycogen is stored with 3 grams of water. In that water are salts. When you deplete your glycogen you loose that water and the salts with it. I drink a lot of water. I have a bottle of water with me at all times.
