  • Ok, it's time to rant!

There are just a few things I'd like to point out to whoever wrote the Atkins books - and other diet books.

How do you get 1/2 cup of ANY veggie? Unless you've got hours to spend with water displacement equipment, it ain't gonna happen easily. And just what is "loosely packed"?

And who came up with your net carb ratings. According to the Atkins Carb Gram counter, 1 cup of broccoli should weigh in at 1.6 net carbs. Except - the Calorie Counter web site - pretty respected - puts the net carb value at 6 - yup - 6! So who is right because if you're on induction, that's a pretty big difference.

The rating for plum tomato is also massively different.

When I read the forums, I see people responding with "It's in the book" and "Have you read the book?" I think the problem is that reading the book only works until you read another book and the contradictions weigh in.

Meanwhile, could someone tell me how to accurately measure 1/2 a cup or even a cup of "loosely packed leaves"?

    Rant over!

Why not use the USDA site? It's pretty respected, too. Who provides the information for "Calorie Counter"?

If you don't want to measure cups or define "loosely" packed, just weigh your food. That's perfectly acceptable, too.

LOL - as it happens I was measuring using my SCALE as I read your post. I agree with you. And by the way, I found out that the veggie list at the Atkins site is actually in oz (and grams for we Canadians) so that simplifies things.

Have you looked at FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal It is a cool way to count whether you do cups or grams or what not

According to fitday (which I trust with my life ) a cup of raw broccoli has 5.8 carb, 2.3 fiber - so therefore 3.5 net carb

Loosely packed is a pretty standard measurement, used in cooking for ever. All it means is you don't press the food down and squish it into the measureing cup. You pour it in and when it hits the top of your cup it's measured. Unlike things like brown sugar which are measured in packed cups. You fill it, press it down hard then repeat until you have a packed measuring cup.
