  • Salad Confusion!

    Hi,

After a few false starts i am on the Induction, and all going well......i think??!!
I have picked 4 meals plans from the book (i only picked 4 as i knew i would eat and enjoy these ones) And is is correct that i eat 200gm or 110gm of salad? For lunch? I mean i'm not complaining but eating large portions is what got me into trouble in the first place

And then i looked at a serialisation of the Diet in The Mail and it looked totally different from what i am doing - like 2 or 4 cups of salad...

I'm very confused - should i just follow the book and ignore the instructions in The Mail?

I'm also aware that years fpr other diets have mad me feel guilty for eating so much - even if it is mainly salad!!!

    Thanks

            Hi,

Sorry, i'm still being really thick........i have some cup measurments at home and 3 cups of loosely packed salad do not come anywhere near the 200 gm stated in the book? So do i have 3 cups instead of what the book says of follow the book - again sorry for asking but like 200gm of salad (cos for instance) is a whole lettuce and 110gm is nearly two bags of mixed leaves....

I no what you mean hun, the cups are standard size in america i think so we have different measurments here im still very confused with all the measuring my family are showing me but im not taking it in one bit so im just having a little of everything rather than measuring till i understand it all. xx

In the UK edition of the book, the editor tried to transform from cup (a measure of volume) to grams (a measure of weight)... and things got messed up, because cups of different vegetables have different weights.

To see how many grams are equivalent to a cup of some food, you can look up that food in the USDA database:

For good nutrition, you should be aiming close to 20 net carbs, and over half of these net carbs must come from Induction vegetables.

And talking about vegetables, you might want to join the Veggie Challenge. It starts in a few days. Here's the link to it:

Well, i'm going to go with 4 cups when ever it says 200gm and 3 cups when it says 110gm - as to be honest i've just eaten my lunch and i feel uncomfortably full - as i've eaten a WHOLE lettuce LOL.
I've searched and searched online to see if anyone else has raised this but it seems it is only me........LMAO

Weigh your vegetables instead, if you find that easier.

Track your foods in FitDay to make sure you don't go over 20 net carbs. Also check that you are eating over half of your net carbs from vegetables.

I'd also add that there's no need to eat until you're "uncomfortably full." Eat until you're satisfied, no matter how much the meal plan prescribes.

                        Hi,

Thanks to all of you for your messages - i have ordered myself a US version of the book - seemed the simplest option! I have also worked out that 100gm of salad (mixed leaves) will give you just under 1.5 gm NC. So untill my new version book arrives i will be able to continue - though i am going to double check all the 'gm' counts on my diet plan agianst the Carb Counter i printed off - so i know i'm not going wildly off plan!

And Holly, yes i know not to eat till silly full, so many thanks for the 'prod' i need it! - but unfortunaly eating way too big a portion is why i ended up on the Atkins - via just about every diet you can name.......don't even get me started on the devil in disguise that is the 'Scarsdale Diet' - i will never be able to even LOOK at a grapefruit again..

                          Re: Salad Confusion!

Oh, I hear you on that one. I still eat mindlessly sometimes. Although I really disagree about grapefruit. I am really looking forward to OWL Rung 7 or premaintenance to eat the occasional grapefruit. I miss citrus.

I just wouldn't want you to think that the only way to be successful on Atkins is following someone's meal plan to a T. Atkins can (and should) be tailored to your tastes and appetite, assuming the rules are followed of course.

                            Re: Salad Confusion!

This problem does come up fairly frequently with UK members on ADBB, as it is really confusing as you have found. 200 grams of lettuce is a lot of volume - nearly 4 cups.

The US version has us eating up to 3 cups from the 'salad vegetable' list or 2 from the salad list plus one from the 'other vegetable' list.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Does it matter if half your net carbs are from vegetables but the total for the day is 10 carbs?
