  • Need opinions please

    www.atkinsexposed.org

I found this site this morning and have been reading page after page. I starting getting a more than a little worried and I would like some other opinions. This site claims people can go blind, have bone loss, high cholesterol, lower brain functioning, all kinds of bad stuff doing Atkins.
My cholesterol went way down doing Atkins. I have lost weight and I feel better.
I would just like some opinions on the site.
    Thank you.

Old one that one. Written by a very militant vegetarian who made it when Atkins started to really get super popular around 2004 You have to fight this kind of stuff with science and knowledge. There are going to be plenty of nay sayers out there who makes claims like those because of ignorance or some agenda. Check out some of the latest science that confirms that cutting out carbs are very beneficial to people.

Thank you Liv. The more I have been reading the more I have been thinking that too. He is very against meat and very for a vegan diet.

Your cholesterol has gone down...have you experienced any negative effects? I haven't - I've never felt better in my life! There are tons of different diets/WOEs out there - each of us has to choose what works for us. Don't forget that anyone with an opinion can post anything on the internet...you don't have to believe any or all of it. There is just as much out there on how wonderful Atkins is.

For some reason that link keeps bringing me back to the forum?

          Let me see...

As a youth I was worned some things could make me go blind, but I don't remember eating healthy as being one of them!

My aches and pains in joints, bones, muscles, etc. have decreased significantly in the last 4 months.

My cholesterol has dropped significantly since restarting Atkins, where it did nothing but go up on anything resembling the "healthy diet" proposed by EVERYONE (except Dr. Atkins)!

Decreased brain functioning... I thought that was part of growing old, either that or being male! Either way, I've been sharper, more alert and awake (fewer surprise napps at work) since rejoining the low carb race.

There are dozens, and dozens, and dozens... of forum members here whose lives have proven to demonstrate the opposite of these claims...

And, I have yet to see a credible scientific study that supports the claim that "doing Atkins" will achieve these horrendous results.

The proof is in the pudding, or in the scrambled eggs!

Thanks everyone. I am all relaxed about this WOE again. I also watched Sugar: The Bitter Truth on youtube this morning after your comments and it reinforced Atkins again for me. Too much propaganda out there. I also saw McDonalds 4 Year Old Cheeseburger Video on youtube. That is just gross.

It's an issue we've been having for some time. Until it gets fixed, you need to copy and paste the link in your address bar.

Atkins may not be for everyone. It works for me, and it's worked for many many others I know and with no ill effects whatsoever.

Atkins is not for everyone, I second Suzanne. If you are really worried go get a full panel of blood work every 6 months and see what happens. You won't be at RUNG 1 forever, you will move on and eat other foods! You just won't eat sugar, bread, etc. More and more evidence supports its the sugar and refined carbs that cause diabetes and hypertension NOT cholesteral in meat. But everything (except veggies) in moderation.

                      Re: Need opinions please

I finally got to the site, read through all the pages, although I got to a point where I skimmed most as I went.

This guy has issues, not only with the facts and the science , but with honesty, integrity and common sense. The problem is, there might actually be people out there reading this garbage and taking it as factual.

Not only is Atkins NOT for everyone, if our healthcare professionals, politicians, and all around uneducated "experts" would straighten up and fly right, Atkins might be for NO ONE!

That's right I said it! But, what did I mean?

If we started feeding our children right from the git-go, loosing the sugar gourged treats, snacks, wrong fruits (dehydrated, sugar concentrated bananas, raisins, etc.), excesses in breads, pastas, gravvies, sauces, "cream-of-whater" soups and overly refined GARBAGE! And get them fired up about moving their bodies. We might be able to turn this world wide epidemic around.

After all, the Atkins Maintenance Program is nothing more than healthy eating. If we can get everyone on Atkins Maintenance BEFORE they are sitting like me, on the verge of dying of fat complications (ie, before the health crisis arrives) We might be able to avoid the health problems in their future.

You know, it's all June Cleaver's fault. (Sorry, for those who might not know, she was the Beaver's mom. The quintisential stay at home mom in the dress and apron of the 50s and 60s, dutifully baking to show her family that she loved them...TO DEATH!)

We keep emphasizing that Atkins is NOT for children and pregnant women (I guess it's ok pregnant men!) but that does not include Maintenance.

Atkins is fine for children! Whomever says Atkins is unsafe for kids probably doesn't realize the plan exceeds the Food Pyramid in every way save for processed grains and sugars.

And the processed grains and sugars are what is kiling us.

I was however, sticking to the recommendation od DANDR'02.

                            Re: Need opinions please

I will say that anecdotally DANDR has done wonders for my kids (the OWL rungs, only the teen did induction and lost 20 pounds in a month). Insulin issues are passed on to the next generation from ours, so the choices we make affect them, too. I have a gluten intolerance that I had only just pinpointed in the last year, so it makes sense to not feed that to the kids. I'm now testing them for nightshade intolerance.

An interesting experiment: I withheld grain from my family for a month and then allowed each of them to eat a bun with their hamburgers. Three of the six of us immediately ended up napping for the next 3-6 hours. Two felt ill and one didn't seem affected.

It just goes to show processed grains are definitely not welcome in my house.
We've benefited as a family from low carb. Certainly DANR will say 'it's not for children because it has to. No reasonable man wants to risk a lawsuit because some kid choked on a breakfast sausage because DANDR told them to feed the kid protein for breakfast.

My 10 year old grandson wants to be a chef, and a football player. (I told him a carreer in the NFL folowed by a chain of high class restaurants was certainly OK with grampa!

His doctor recommended he not start his day out with carbs, but with more protein. So most mornings, he starts his day off, before school, by cooking bacon and eggs, or omelets for himself and his mom. He's learning the basics about cooking and feeding himself beter.

                              Gramps couldn't be happier.
