I'll bet the fact that he was a fighter with a never give up atitude had as much going for him as did the change in his diet!

For me it doesn't make any difference. I would rather follow the advice of those people who have been successful on Atkins than that of someone who has yet to make Atkins a lifestyle.

"I also have a Bachaelor of Science in Agriculture, specializing in nutrition. Where does that fit into the "experience" equation."

This doesn't matter to me either, because I don't see what it has to do with being "experienced" about Atkins.
Who has not made Atkins a lifestyle yet? I haven't located a link to check in with the forum "lifestyle" police, can you direct me to that link? How long does it take to officially be identified as a lifestyle? I've been successful on Atkins 3, 4, maybe 5 times in my life. Not only that, but I know what happens if you choose to go back to the old way of eating. So tell me who I have to check in with to determine if I meet the "successful" criteria.

Now your last comment is more telling than you probably know. We have numerous threads about mainstream nutritionists who have no clue about what they are talking about, and the scientific research is present to lead them to the light, but they refuse to see it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a nutritionist, never have been. My nutritional education (while the science of fat, carbs, protein, calories, etc is the same) I studied how to feed livestock to get the effect desired for the specified animal. Back in the 80s that meant how to make stronger and faster horses, and how to make bigger and fatter cattle, hogs and sheep. Funny, the mainstream medical supporters are using the same guidelines for healthy humans that we studied to make fat hogs.

Let's say we have a 500 pound man, goes on Atkins, looses 300 pounds and keeps it off for 10 years and counting. Because this person has been "successful" on Atkins, does this qualify him to guarantee success for my 290 pound body looking to lose 50 to 70 pounds? Or, does it qualify him to share what worked/works for him and to present possible solutions that another individual can try to see if it works for them?

Does a forum member's title (under their name) provide sufficient accreditation as an Atkins nutritionist? Is the title "moderator" a qualifier for an individuals expertise in "doing Atkins" or is it a title given to a volunteer who makes a committment to help keep a web forum running smoothly. I think my title is "adventurer", does that mean I'm experienced and qualified to expand my Atkins advice to new and exciting directions, or does it simply mean I have a reached a randomly determined number of posts in the forum?

Can I learn somethings that might not work for me, that might be useful for someone else? YUPP! Can I provide suggestions to someone that might help them fine tune their program (if they choose to take my advice)? YUPP! Am I qualified to tell someone 2000 to 3000 miles away, who I don't know from anywhere but here, that they are or are not "doing" or "committed" or "successful" on Atkins? NOPE!

But I can offer praise for their successes. I can try and convince them that falling off the wagon is never as bad as deciding to not get back on it. I can recommend to someone that the "minimum recommended daily water consumption of 64 ounces" may just very well be a minimum and that there isn't a listed maximum. YUPP!

There are several "Atkins Heroes" for me on this forum, I label them this, not just because of their own success, but also for their advice and the way that advice is presented.

So far, I don't recall any of them telling someone else "You're not doing Atkins."

Personally I feel this is a board where we come to seek help and support..I do not think anyone shouldn't mention, how they had to tweak something to make it work for them, what if I am having the same problem..because my gallbladder was taken out, I can not eat things like chicken skin, or heavily fried foods, as it makes me very sick, it would be nice to see how others counteract that.....for some reason, I can't seem to drop my blood sugar even after being on this wol for almost a year...I wouldn't go ballistic if someone had a suggestion as to why..so please do not stop sharing...I also did the 1970's version of Atkins, lost 23 pounds in 2 weeks.. ate a boat load of bacon, probably couldn't eat the boat load of bacon ever again, plus I wasn't this heavy....but... anyway please do not stop sharing, on different ways this wol has helped...it's what really helps me..

I would have probably stuck with the 72 book, but I couldn't find it (I'm sure I still have it, but just couldn't find it), so I bought the 02 version. I also use the "Atkins Diabetes Revolution" and the TNT Diet. Personally, if I thought the Dali Lama had advice that would help me correct my diabetes situation and in the long run help me lose more weight, I would use it.

As a Marine of decades gone by, I'm not one who believes in carrying only one "weapon" into battle. If I got fat just eating donuts, the advice pathway to good health would be much simpler. There are some, here in the midwest, who don't know what a vegetable is, they survive on "meat'n'taters", whose definition of seafood is catfish caught in the local creek, covered in breading and deep fried, while consuming massive quantities of beer. (nothing wrong with deep fried, as long as you loose the breading and the beer, LOL!.)

My appetite isn't run by Frosted Flakes, HoHos or Moon Pies. I never even consumed lots of high octane (not sugar free) sodas.

But, I did let the pastas, breads, and vegetables too high on the glycemic index for my diabetes, pretty much run my life.

So, I have to approach Atkins by looking at my lab numbers, my blood sugars, my appearance, my feeling of well being and my weight (and/or clothing fit) to get the best results for me.

Which is where I believe my position for offering advice comes in. I refuse to come from the "you're doing it wrong" place and try to come from either a strictly informational base or "this is what worked for me" place.

    But, that is just me.

With organic meat (or should I say REAL organic meat) the animals eat their natural diet which means no grains! Other meat gets fed grains which changes the omega 3-6 ratio which makes the fat in the meat less healthy than it should be. Getting pasture fed meat is better than not, and some organic meats I think can be grain fed.

    Re: Not following Atkins?

I'm sure it says in DANDR somewhere that some peoples CCLL can be as low as 15g carbs per day. I take that as meaning you have to find your own CCLL even if that falls below 20g carbs.

I don't have a doctor like Atkins to turn to when I haven't lost weight, or am in any way struggling - I expect he had much advice and suggestions to tweak things. Without advice, we have to decide for ourselves what to do, what to tweak. Which is what this forum is so great for, we can see what has worked for others and decide if it might work for us or if there is nothing we need to change at all.

Atkins was able to give his patients further medications or supplements to help them - he believe in working with the patient and their diet and lifestyle. Many of us don't have a doctor to help us like this in this way - so we have to make our own judgements and see what works for us as individuals, Atkins has a LOT of guidance in his books and he does say that the diet should work for a majority of people, but many people may have problems - hence all of his fantastic suggestions to help kickstart things.

He obviously new that certain foods would be triggers/allergies for people hence the ladder - if you were doing atkins but allergic to many foods - you couldn't be accused of not doing atkins, because you would be doing it as best you can.

I ordered the '72 book to check out the original Atkins plan. I have to cut my oxalates down...waaaay down. My beloved veggies that I am eating on DANDR (heck, I'm well into OWL so it could be NANY also ) are making me sick. So I need to do basically an elimination diet with the veg and looking to see if Atkins '72 can help me stay with Atkins while I very slowly start to add veggies back in.

Does this make me an Atkins or DANDR heretic? Maybe. I don't know. I DO know that I need to do whatever it takes to get better AND lose weight.

There are probably a lot of us here that need to tweak Atkins for various health reasons. This is quite different from those who look to tweak Atkins so they can have doughnuts and hot fudge sundaes (or whatever). The problem as I see it is that this is a public board read by many and posting say, my version of Atkins could be interpreted by readers as THE way to do DANDR. For that reason, I think those who have customized the plan for medical reasons should keep that in mind when posting.

That said, except for maybe some postings in my journal, this will be the last mention of my Atkins "experiments" here on ADBB. Not because I don't care to share, but because I don't think what I will be attempting would be beneficial to the masses. They don't have my health issues. They will have to read the book and find their own way.

I am glad you brought this up forbey. I posted about the veggie advice on here vs the book and got some answers that were not in the book. You are right, what works for you, does not work for me. I do great eating induction style but RUNG 1 slows my weight loss by 1/2.

You know when I went to the endocrinologist for my Thyroid the first time, a few months ago, I of course had to tell him that I have already lost weight, and I asked him about the Atkins diet..Thankfully he approved, but my doctor told me that most of his patients who are also on it, modify this wol for their life styles, or for whatever they feel will help them best to lose weight. He told me that rarely people go by the letter of the plan. That they need to eat or not eat, for whatever suits their body. I didn't really think much of it, until I was reading what forbey had just said. However with that said I love Liv.. I just had to add that LOLOL..
