  • 2 weeks and no real results despite deep ketosis?

Hi I am in still a confused state! I posted a few weeks back not being able to get into ketosis and then I got some good tips and managed to get into deep ketosis - I lost some weight and finessed my diet as I wasnt quite getting the fat/protein/carb ratio exact. I have had that fairly accurate recently and I weighed myself today as I do every 3 days same time etc. etc. and my body fat reading has gone up a tad and so has my weight - I started at 137.5lbs went down to 133lbs and now I am back up at 135lbs??? I am eating well and the sticks turn deep purple when I test for ketosis that shows I am deep in fat burning mode? I feel no loss around the waist. I am also doing 60 mins of cardio every other day which 35 mins is of running 5-6km and the rest is hill climbing. I am also doing weights 4-5 days a week. On a cardio session which is followed by weights I have a Polar heart rate monitor and it is showing a calorie burn of 1000

It has been 2 weeks and to be honest I am quite depressed, can anyone help me out here and should I stay on the induction diet for another 2 weeks? How can I be deep in ketosis yet still be putting on weight? does this mean if I come out of it I will put weight on big time?

    Many thanks

    (A fed up) Phil

    Patience, young Jedi.

IT will happen... look at the scale NOT...it, your enemy is.

Measure and record your arm, waist, hip, thigh, calf circumfrence and then go measure again after a few weeks. If true to Atkins you are, true to you this Atkins WOE will be.

        Hi Phil-
Could it be that you are gaining muscle, which weighs more and losing fat at the same time? % wise 2 pounds is pretty good considering you don't have much to lose. I agree with acey measuring the most reliable way to tell. Just remember your water, I see on your fit day you kept track on some days :ThumbsUp . A reading of "deep" purple could indicate dehydration, which will interfere with weight loss. Good luck, but you won't need it if you stick with it. I promise it works with patients and time.

What are you using to measure your bodyfat? I'm thinking this is muscle weight, and your just getting inacurate bf % readings however youa re doing it.

Also if you are exercising vigorously are you eating enough? you may not be getting enough calories.

try going to www.mybodycomp.com you can record your measurements and trck them there. It will also give you an idea of what your caloric intake should be.

first weight loss isn't linear. Your body is constantly morphing wiht the fat mass shrinking, the muscle mass increasing and the fluids in constant fluctuation in accordance with body chem, but alas the scales only measure the force ofgravity upon our total mass. you are going to have ups and downs you lost 2 pounds for your induction period and how much of your total needed to lose pounds is that? Most folk get 5-10% of the total amount they need to lose during induction. For somebody needing to lose 10 pounds that would be .5-1 pound for somebody needed to lose 100
pounds that would be 5-10 pounds.

Next ketosis does not mean weight loss. It means you are burning fats for fuel period. the skix don't know if that is body fat or dietary fats, just that at the time that pee was made you hade excess ketones in your blood stream that spilled over into your urine. You can be a big loser and never change a stix color you can eat 10 pounds of butter a day and be dark purple andgain weight.

Keep eating your Atkins and feed only your hunger. DOn't go by the cals those charts say you are burning for your workouts either they are for folk of average metabolism and you may or may not have average metabolism.

Move to OWL and add the 5 net carbs more of the veggies. Many folk lose better in OWL then induction as those veggies fill them up faster and provide vital nutrients.

            Happy low carbing.

              Thanks for the comments,

With regard to how am I measuring myself, it could be muscle mass increase etc. Well, I am weighing myself down the gym each time (at the same time etc.) and its a pretty good machine (not a cheapy) that measures water content, fat mass and Free Fat Mass (muscle) It measured an increase in fat mass of just over 1lb and again a slight decrease in muscle mass. My water content was the same as when I was 133lb

My arms chest etc are all the same size, girth, no shrinkage in trouser size etc and I am drinking on average a MINIMUM of 2.4 - 4 ltrs of water a day. My Basal rate is showing about 1600 cals a day and I am eating approx - 1500 - 1700 per day.

I guess I shall just have to persist!

since you know your lean body mass use the Katch McArdle formula as it is more accurate in figuring basal.

The Katch-McArdle formula applies equally to men and women
                BMR = 370 + (21.6 X lean mass in kg)

If your BMR is 1600 cals a day you are not eating nearly enough. You know that your BMR is the number of calories your body needs to do abosolutely nothing? You should be eating ABOVE that amount, and more than just 100 cals, especially if you are exercising this much.

I think you're in starvation mode.

Dont be a scale slave. You will do it, stop stepping on that scale every three days. You will lose weight when you stop paying attention to the numbers.

Sorry you're having a bit of a bumpy road. One (and prolly the only) good thing about me being so big, is I lose well. I'm stalled a bit now, but I'm finally incorpoarting a little movement. Being sedentary for 12 years has it's drawbacks-- ack, how embarassing.

Keep holding true to the plan, it'll happen.

I agree about the scale. On the second week of induction, i weighed the the second of third day and it showed i had gained 4 pounds. So, i put the scale in my closet. You may have to restrict your scale to a week or even 2 weeks weigh in. You may have to put it out of reach, if you are really tempted.

I never went into deep ketosis on induction, it was always moderate, and lost 10 pounds, and went down a pants size. You goal should not be to get into deep ketosis. I think i did read in Dr. Atkins book that muscle weighs more than fat. But like you said, just be persistent and enjoy this WOE. If you are eating alot of meat to get in deep ketosis, you may have to restrict it to 6 or 8 ounces, because extra meat can add up.

Hope this helps in some way. Keep that persistent level up, and be patient. It will payoff...

Phil - what is your fat/protein/carbs ratio on fitday?

I am sure I read here that more than 30% protein regularly might hinder weightloss.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

nope that is your minimum number of cals aday your body needs to be asleep 24/7 and maintain your health and weight. your active metabolic rate will be more eat on average between the two and you will lose weight no matter whosae plan you are on. Eat Atkins and you will lose the fat weight andspare the lean tissues while enjoying the metabolic advantage of more cals and better tasting foods with the ketosis appetite suppression too.

                              Happy low carbing.
