  • Re: Dandr ~ Our Summer Reading Program

Ok... another of my dumb questions... or rather, a question I can almost guess the answer to. I'm posting it here, not because Dr. A mentioned this when writing about exercise, but because reading the exercise part of DANDR got me thinking during my workouts these days.

So... lately it's been horribly hot and humid here. I've been doing my usual fast dog walk and exercise workout. No more, no less. But in this sticky weather it feels like I'm doing at least double. I need to consciously keep my rate up or I'd flag pretty quickly.

I just wonder if anyone knows... if you exercise in high heat and humidity, do you get an extra "bang for your buck" (to quote Dr. A), or does it simply feel that way?

not a dumb question at all. i have often wondered if a workout is the same in air conditioning as opposed to outside in the heat. i get zapped faster in the heat and take in more water.

i am wondering how you even go about finding that info on the web?

Here's an article that I found talking about heat and exercise. Our hearts are working harder do to the temperature and sun! Very interesting!

thanks saty! we are straining more in the heat and our body is working harder doing the same activities when doing them outside. that all makes sense to me.

for every degree the body’s internal temperature rises the heart beats approximately 10 bpm faster
          that statement is really interesting!

I had been wondering about that too. Sounds silly, but I had wondered if it made a difference to have a fan blowing on me while I was on the treadmill. It makes it seem like I'm not doing as much when I'm not hot and sweating.

yep heat makes us work more and burn more cals but it is also dangerous if we allow ourselves to over heat as other body changes are going on too in response to the heat increase internally so use your fan and stay inside if you want.

An Atkins book showed up on my desk at work yesterday, copyright 1973. Someone must have had it and returned it - I don't even remember having it for a long time.

It's interesting to see how the program changed from 1973 to the one we are using now.

Just a few things I noticed on what's now Induction:

                  Margarine is allowed.

Two small salads a day... OR a sour pickle. Green olives allowed. No other vegies are allowed on what they called Level 1!

                  No cream cheese.

                  Unlimited sugar free diet soda.

                  Gelatin with artificial sweeteners.

They are even referring to the program as "The Revolutionary Never-Hungry No-Limit Steak-and-Salad Plus Diet".

Thanks Saty! Interesting article. And thanks for the input everyone. Yes... I'd kind of figured it must be more stressful on the heart etc. Good to have confirmation. Glad I exercise in the very early mornings, although these days, even then it feels too hot and muggy!

Sometimes I think the silliest things - and always tell on myself.. LOL.

I'm going to hang on to this book, it's interesting to read and see the changes. I like our version much better though. I'm not sure I could do it now with a small salad or a sour pickle as my only veggies, even for 14 days.

I was reading about the fat fast yesterday, I'd missed that somehow. It seemed an interesting idea, but the things that are listed to eat - gross. Can you imagine eating macadamia nuts and cream cheese with some sugar free syrup all day long??

I have the original version. I re-read it last year and that's when I got inspired to give Atkins another try. Then I found the Board and then I went and got DANDR. I would give you mine Jimmie but I'm never, never, never, never going to give away either of my Dr. A books. Well, I have the Lifetime one too so....I'm not giving away any of them. I love them all!

Well, if you want to hear a funny starting out story....

The first time I started Atkins, I didn't even have the book! You can only imagine how silly I was. My good friend Kate said "It's easy, you can eat meat and salad and eggs, but you can only eat 20 carbs a day!"

I was like, oh, that's easy! So I ate nothing by meat, salad, and eggs, and then I'd eat half a snickers bar for my 20 carbs a day!!! The craziest thing is I still lost weight doing that!

I had NO concept. Then I got the book, which made a ton more sense! That is why I love this board, cause it tells every newcomer to read DANDR!!!
                                Best Wishes!
