    SEMI ANNUAL CHALLENGE #2



    A “FIVE A DAY” EVENT!


    MONDAY, OCTOBER 22 – FRIDAY OCTOBER 26 2007


    Sign up begins Monday, October 15 and ends on Sunday, October 21 * *


    From Induction to Maintenance, this semi-annual challenge is open to any member of ADBB


    The purpose of this challenge is for us to understand what eating our vegetables really means! We are all trying our best to eat a healthy diet. Often on ADBB we hear people say that they are indeed eating their veggies. Vegetables are a big part of following the Atkins WOE. On page 84 of DANDR, Dr. Atkins talks about the importance of vegetables and what they add to a healthy diet, go have a look.



    Did you know?

    There are specific recommendations for how many net vegetable carbs to consume daily? For purposes of earning the award, you must consume the proper amount of net vegetable carbs for whichever phase of Atkins you are currently on:

    Induction - your challenge is to consume 12 to 15 net vegetable carbs per day

    OWL - your challenge is to consume 17 to 20 net vegetable carbs per day

    Maintenance - your challenge is to consume 22 to 25 net vegetable carbs per day




    A few rules:

    Sign up in this thread:

    State which rung/phase you are on

    Chart your net veggie carbs for the full 5 days

    Report your net carbs to this thread at the end of each day

    You must try a new vegetable at least once during the 5 days

    Have fun and eat your veggies!




    Helpful hints for making the most of the challenge:

    · When consuming vegetables for this challenge, please go by net carbs (Total carbs minus fiber = net carb).

    · Your daily numbers should be rounded up to the nearest whole number.

    · If you are already tracking your foods in a fitday or similar type program, continue with that and pay particular attention to the net veggies that you are getting.

    · If you don’t have an account you can set one up at Fitdayor make sure to log it on a piece of paper, or better yet, in your Journal Stats thread.
    • Don’t wait until the end of the day and try to hit the mark all in one sitting. Spread those veggie carbs throughout the day!

    ** Anyone is welcome to join once the sign up has ended. Keep in mind that an award cannot be earned unless all 5 days are completed and net vegetable carb amounts met each day.

    I have waiting for this and am going to have a practice run this week - I think it will break my stall.

            I'm in. Induction, I'm going to try brussel sprouts. I think they look like they would be good in garlic butter. I will buy some on wed and look how to cook them.

              I was in the Berries rung already but since I've been in a stall for over 3 weeks, I've decided to go back to induction.

              I would love to do this. Thanks for the invite.

                  Oh yah, and i'm in the maintenance phase, so my net will be 22-25 carbs of veggies a day

                    i dropped back to owl several weeks ago and i'm working my way very quickly so i'll commit to owl, 17 -20 net veggie carbs per day.

                    i'm not sure what new veggie i will try. i'll report that on the day i eat it, i guess.

                      Count me in, Jimmie!

                      I put myself back in induction since I had to do the glucose tolerance test two Fridays ago. I may be back on rung 1 once the challenge starts. We'll see! I love my veggies...well, the non-scary ones. Still haven't been brave enough to try eggplant!

                        Greetings, Fellow Challengers!

                        I am so IN for this challenge!

                        I am in Pre-Maintenance (which is designated as part of OWL, I think), but I am sure that I will eat at least Maintenance level veggie carbs... the last veggie challenge taught me to embrace veggies, and I have continued eating more than the minimum required since then.

                        Thanks so much for doing this again, Silly! It is a very important challenge, and will help many people.

                          I'm TOTALLY IN! Yay!

                          I eat far more than the recommendations. So, I'm going to go for 30-35 net carbs per day just in veggies (and 25 grams of fiber per day from veggies). I challenge many of you to EXCEED the recommendations. Especially if you are in maintenance or high up in OWL.

                          I have no idea what new veggie I'll try. But, I'll come up with something.

                            I just realized that I'll be on vacation in Seattle for this challenge. So, it really WILL be a challenge for me!

                            Thank goodness for Pike Place Market. Lots of veggies there...and maybe I'll find one that I haven't tried before.
